1 וידבר יהוה אל משה לאמר	1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,
2 נקם נקמת בני ישראל מאת המדינים אחר תאסף אל עמיך	2 'Exact the ful vengeance for the Israelites on the Midianites. Afterwards you will be gathered to yourpeople.'
3 וידבר משה אל העם לאמר החלצו מאתכם אנשים לצבא ויהיו על מדין לתת נקמת יהוה במדין	3 Moses said to the people, 'Some of you are to take up arms for Yahweh's campaign against Midian,to carry out the vengeance of Yahweh on Midian.
4 אלף למטה אלף למטה לכל מטות ישראל תשלחו לצבא	4 You will put a thousand men in the field from each of the tribes of Israel.'
5 וימסרו מאלפי ישראל אלף למטה שנים עשר אלף חלוצי צבא	5 In this way Israel's thousands provided twelve thousand men equipped for war, one thousand fromeach tribe:
6 וישלח אתם משה אלף למטה לצבא אתם ואת פינחס בן אלעזר הכהן לצבא וכלי הקדש וחצצרות התרועה בידו	6 Moses put them in the field, one thousand from each tribe, with Phinehas, son of the priest Eleazar,to go with them carrying the sacred objects and the trumpets for the battle cry.
7 ויצבאו על מדין כאשר צוה יהוה את משה ויהרגו כל זכר	7 They made war on Midian, as Yahweh had ordered Moses, and put every male to death.
8 ואת מלכי מדין הרגו על חלליהם את אוי ואת רקם ואת צור ואת חור ואת רבע חמשת מלכי מדין ואת בלעם בן בעור הרגו בחרב	8 What is more, they kil ed the kings of Midian, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba, the five Midianite kings;they also put Balaam son of Beor to the sword.
9 וישבו בני ישראל את נשי מדין ואת טפם ואת כל בהמתם ואת כל מקנהם ואת כל חילם בזזו	9 The Israelites took the Midianite women and their little ones captive and carried off al their cattle, altheir flocks and al their goods as booty.
10 ואת כל עריהם במושבתם ואת כל טירתם שרפו באש	10 They set fire to the towns where they lived and to al their encampments.
11 ויקחו את כל השלל ואת כל המלקוח באדם ובבהמה	11 Then, taking al their booty, everything they had captured, human and animal,
12 ויבאו אל משה ואל אלעזר הכהן ואל עדת בני ישראל את השבי ואת המלקוח ואת השלל אל המחנה אל ערבת מואב אשר על ירדן ירחו	12 they brought the captives, spoil and booty to Moses, the priest Eleazar and the whole community ofIsraelites at the camp on the Plains of Moab, near the Jordan by Jericho.
13 ויצאו משה ואלעזר הכהן וכל נשיאי העדה לקראתם אל מחוץ למחנה	13 Moses, the priest Eleazar and al the leaders of the community went out of the camp to meet them.
14 ויקצף משה על פקודי החיל שרי האלפים ושרי המאות הבאים מצבא המלחמה	14 Moses was enraged with the officers of the army, the commanders of the thousands andcommanders of the hundreds, who had come back from this military expedition.
15 ויאמר אליהם משה החייתם כל נקבה	15 He said, 'Why have you spared the life of al the women?
16 הן הנה היו לבני ישראל בדבר בלעם למסר מעל ביהוה על דבר פעור ותהי המגפה בעדת יהוה	16 They were the very ones who, on Balaam's advice, caused the Israelites to be unfaithful to Yahwehin the affair at Peor: hence the plague which struck Yahweh's community.
17 ועתה הרגו כל זכר בטף וכל אשה ידעת איש למשכב זכר הרגו	17 So kil al the male children and kil al the women who have ever slept with a man;
18 וכל הטף בנשים אשר לא ידעו משכב זכר החיו לכם	18 but spare the lives of the young girls who have never slept with a man, and keep them foryourselves.
19 ואתם חנו מחוץ למחנה שבעת ימים כל הרג נפש וכל נגע בחלל תתחטאו ביום השלישי וביום השביעי אתם ושביכם	19 As for you, bivouac outside the camp for seven days, everyone who has kil ed anyone or touched acorpse. Purify yourselves and your prisoners on the third and seventh days,
20 וכל בגד וכל כלי עור וכל מעשה עזים וכל כלי עץ תתחטאו	20 and purify al clothing, everything made of skin, everything woven of goat's hair and everythingmade of wood.'
21 ויאמר אלעזר הכהן אל אנשי הצבא הבאים למלחמה זאת חקת התורה אשר צוה יהוה את משה	21 The priest Eleazar said to the soldiers who had come back from the campaign, 'This is an article ofthe Law which Yahweh prescribed to Moses:
22 אך את הזהב ואת הכסף את הנחשת את הברזל את הבדיל ואת העפרת	22 although gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin and lead,
23 כל דבר אשר יבא באש תעבירו באש וטהר אך במי נדה יתחטא וכל אשר לא יבא באש תעבירו במים	23 everything that can withstand fire can be cleaned by being passed through fire, it must stil bepurified with water for purification. Whatever cannot resist fire you must pass through water.
24 וכבסתם בגדיכם ביום השביעי וטהרתם ואחר תבאו אל המחנה	24 'Wash your clothes on the seventh day and you wil then be clean. You may then re-enter the camp.'
25 ויאמר יהוה אל משה לאמר	25 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:
26 שא את ראש מלקוח השבי באדם ובבהמה אתה ואלעזר הכהן וראשי אבות העדה	26 'With the priest Eleazar and the heads of families in the community, take a count of the spoils andcaptives, human and animal.
27 וחצית את המלקוח בין תפשי המלחמה היצאים לצבא ובין כל העדה	27 You wil then share out the spoil, half and half, between those who fought the campaign and the restof the community.
28 והרמת מכס ליהוה מאת אנשי המלחמה היצאים לצבא אחד נפש מחמש המאות מן האדם ומן הבקר ומן החמרים ומן הצאן	28 From the share of the combatants who took part in the campaign, you wil set aside one out of everyfive hundred persons, oxen, donkeys and sheep as Yahweh's portion.
29 ממחציתם תקחו ונתתה לאלעזר הכהן תרומת יהוה	29 You wil take this from the half share coming to them and give it to the priest Eleazar as the portionset aside for Yahweh.
30 וממחצת בני ישראל תקח אחד אחז מן החמשים מן האדם מן הבקר מן החמרים ומן הצאן מכל הבהמה ונתתה אתם ללוים שמרי משמרת משכן יהוה	30 From the half coming to the Israelites, you will take one out of every fifty persons, oxen, donkeys,sheep, and al other animals, and give them to the Levites who are responsible for Yahweh's Dwel ing.'
31 ויעש משה ואלעזר הכהן כאשר צוה יהוה את משה	31 Moses and the priest Eleazar did as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
32 ויהי המלקוח יתר הבז אשר בזזו עם הצבא צאן שש מאות אלף ושבעים אלף וחמשת אלפים	32 The spoils, the remainder of the booty captured by the soldiers, came to six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep and goats,
33 ובקר שנים ושבעים אלף	33 seventy-two thousand head of cattle,
34 וחמרים אחד וששים אלף	34 sixty-one thousand donkeys,
35 ונפש אדם מן הנשים אשר לא ידעו משכב זכר כל נפש שנים ושלשים אלף	35 and in persons, women who had never slept with a man, thirty-two thousand in al .
36 ותהי המחצה חלק היצאים בצבא מספר הצאן שלש מאות אלף ושלשים אלף ושבעת אלפים וחמש מאות	36 Half was assigned to those who had taken part in the war, namely three hundred and thirty-seventhousand five hundred sheep and goats,
37 ויהי המכס ליהוה מן הצאן שש מאות חמש ושבעים	37 of which Yahweh's portion was six hundred and seventy-five,
38 והבקר ששה ושלשים אלף ומכסם ליהוה שנים ושבעים	38 thirty-six thousand head of cattle, of which Yahweh's portion was seventy-two,
39 וחמרים שלשים אלף וחמש מאות ומכסם ליהוה אחד וששים	39 thirty thousand five hundred donkeys, of which Yahweh's portion was sixty-one,
40 ונפש אדם ששה עשר אלף ומכסם ליהוה שנים ושלשים נפש	40 and sixteen thousand persons, of which Yahweh's portion was thirty-two.
41 ויתן משה את מכס תרומת יהוה לאלעזר הכהן כאשר צוה יהוה את משה	41 Moses gave the priest Eleazar the portion set aside for Yahweh, as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
42 וממחצית בני ישראל אשר חצה משה מן האנשים הצבאים	42 As for the half coming to the Israelites which Moses had separated from that of the combatants,
43 ותהי מחצת העדה מן הצאן שלש מאות אלף ושלשים אלף שבעת אלפים וחמש מאות	43 this half, the community's share, came to three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundredsheep and goats,
44 ובקר ששה ושלשים אלף	44 thirty-six thousand head of cattle,
45 וחמרים שלשים אלף וחמש מאות	45 thirty thousand five hundred donkeys
46 ונפש אדם ששה עשר אלף	46 and sixteen thousand persons.
47 ויקח משה ממחצת בני ישראל את האחז אחד מן החמשים מן האדם ומן הבהמה ויתן אתם ללוים שמרי משמרת משכן יהוה כאשר צוה יהוה את משה	47 From this half, the Israelites' share, Moses took one out of every fifty, human and animal, and gavethem to the Levites who were responsible for Yahweh's Dwel ing, as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
48 ויקרבו אל משה הפקדים אשר לאלפי הצבא שרי האלפים ושרי המאות	48 The officers of the thousands who had fought the campaign, the commanders of the thousands andcommanders of the hundreds, came to Moses
49 ויאמרו אל משה עבדיך נשאו את ראש אנשי המלחמה אשר בידנו ולא נפקד ממנו איש	49 and said, 'Your servants have numbered the soldiers under their command: none of our men ismissing.
50 ונקרב את קרבן יהוה איש אשר מצא כלי זהב אצעדה וצמיד טבעת עגיל וכומז לכפר על נפשתינו לפני יהוה	50 So, as an offering for Yahweh, we have brought what each of us has found in the way of goldornaments, armlets and bracelets, rings, earrings and breastplates, to make expiation for ourselves beforeYahweh.'
51 ויקח משה ואלעזר הכהן את הזהב מאתם כל כלי מעשה	51 Moses and the priest Eleazar accepted this gold from them, al this jewel ery.
52 ויהי כל זהב התרומה אשר הרימו ליהוה ששה עשר אלף שבע מאות וחמשים שקל מאת שרי האלפים ומאת שרי המאות	52 This portion of gold given to Yahweh by the commanders of the thousands and commanders of thehundreds amounted to sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.
53 אנשי הצבא בזזו איש לו	53 Each of the soldiers took his own booty.
54 ויקח משה ואלעזר הכהן את הזהב מאת שרי האלפים והמאות ויבאו אתו אל אהל מועד זכרון לבני ישראל לפני יהוה	54 But Moses and the priest Eleazar, having accepted the gold from the commanders of the thousandsand commanders of the hundreds, brought it into the Tent of Meeting, to be a reminder of the Israelites beforeYahweh.
