DOUAI-RHEIMS | NEW JERUSALEM |
---|---|
So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he seemed just to himself. | 1 These three men stopped arguing with Job, because he was convinced of his uprightness. |
And Eliu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram, was angry and was moved to indignation : now he was angry against Job, because he said he was just before God. | 2 But Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite, of the clan of Ram, became very angry. He fumed with rageagainst Job for thinking that he was right and God was wrong; |
And he was angry with his friends because they had not found a reasonable answer, but only had condemned Job. | 3 and he was equal y angry with the three friends for giving up the argument and thus putting God in thewrong. |
So Eliu waited while Job was speaking, because they were his elders that were speaking. | 4 While they and Job were talking, Elihu had waited, because they were older than he was; |
But when he saw that the three were not able to answer, he was exceedingly angry. | 5 but when he saw that the three men had not another word to say in answer, his anger burst out. |
Then Eliu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said : I am younger in days, and you are more ancient; therefore hanging down my head, I was afraid to shew you my opinion. | 6 And Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite began to speak. He said: I am stil young, and you are old, so Iwas shy and hesitant to tel you what I know. |
For I hoped that greater age would speak, and that a multitude of years would teach wisdom. | 7 I thought, 'Age ought to speak, advancing years wil convey wisdom.' |
But, as I see, there is a spirit in men, and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth understanding. | 8 There is, you see, a spirit residing in humanity, the breath of God conferring intelligence. |
They that are aged are not the wise men, neither do the ancients understand judgment. | 9 Great age does not give wisdom, nor seniority fair judgement. |
Therefore I will speak : Hearken to me, I also will shew you my wisdom. | 10 And so I ask you for a hearing; now it is my turn to tel what I know. |
For I have waited for your words, I have given ear to your wisdom, as long as you were disputing in words. | 11 Up to now, I was hanging on your words, I paid attention to your arguments as each of you chose hiswords. |
And as long as I thought you said some thing, I considered : but, as I see, there is none of you that can convince Job, and answer his words. | 12 I paid very close attention; and I see that none of you has confounded Job, not one of you has refutedwhat he says. |
Lest you should say : We have found wisdom, God hath cast him down, not man. | 13 So do not say, 'We have found wisdom; our teaching is divine and not human.' |
He hath spoken nothing to me, and I will not answer him according to your words. | 14 I am not going to follow the same line of argument; my reply to Job wil be couched in different terms. |
They were afraid, and answered no more, and they left off speaking. | 15 They are nonplussed for an answer, words have failed them. |
Therefore because I have waited, and they have not spoken : they stood, and answered no more : | 16 I have been waiting. Since they do not speak, since they have given up the argument, |
I also will answer my part, and will shew my knowledge. | 17 now I shal have my say, my turn has come to say what I know. |
Behold, my belly is as new wine which wanteth vent, which bursteth the new vessels. | 18 For I am ful of words and forced to speak by a spirit within me; |
dummy verses inserted by amos | 19 within me, it feels like new wine seeking a vent, bursting out of new wine-skins. |
I will speak and take breath a little : I will open my lips, and will answer. | 20 To gain relief, I must speak, I must open my lips and reply. |
I will not accept the person of man, and I will not level God with man. | 21 I shall not take anyone's side, I shall not flatter anyone. |
For I know not how long I shall continue, and whether after a while my Maker may take me away. | 22 I do not know how to flatter -- or my Creator would make short work of me. |
