1 Voici les paroles d’Agour, le fils de Yaqué, originaire de Massa. oici les sentences de cet homme: Je me suis fatigué, ô Dieu, j’en suis fatigué et épuisé, ô mon Dieu!	1 The words of the Gatherer, the son of the Vomiter. The vision that the man spoke. God is with him, and he, being strengthened by God and abiding with him, said:
2 Je suis plus stupide qu’aucun autre, et le sens commun me fait défaut:	2 “I am the most foolish among men, and the wisdom of men is not with me.
3 oui, moi qui n’ai pas appris la sagesse, j’ai pensé connaître la science du Saint!	3 I have not learned wisdom, and I have not known the knowledge of sanctity.
4 Qui est monté au ciel et en est revenu? Qui a tenu le vent de ses poings fermés? Qui a contenu les eaux dans le pli de son manteau? Qui a placé les bornes aux extrémités du monde? Peux-tu me dire son nom et le nom de son fils?	4 Who has ascended to heaven and also descended? Who has grasped the wind in his hands? Who has tied the waters together, as with a garment? Who has raised all the limits of the earth? What is his name, and what is the name of his son, if you know?
5 Les paroles de Dieu sont à toute épreuve, il est un bouclier pour ceux qui se fient en lui.	5 Every word of God is fire-tested. He is a bronze shield to those who hope in him.
6 N’ajoute rien à ses paroles: il te reprendrait et montrerait que tu mens.	6 Do not add anything to his words, lest you be reproved and be discovered to be a liar.
7 Je te demande deux choses, mon Dieu, ne me les refuse pas jusqu’au jour de ma mort:	7 Two things I have asked of you; do not deny them to me before I die.
8 éloigne de moi la fausseté et le mensonge, ne me donne ni la pauvreté ni la richesse. Donne-moi seulement mon content de pain.	8 Remove, far from me, vanity and lying words. Give me neither begging, nor wealth. Apportion to me only the necessities of my life,
9 Car avec l’abondance je pourrais te laisser, et dire: “Qui donc est Yahvé?” et dans le dénuement je pourrais me mettre à voler: ce serait déshonorer le nom de mon Dieu!	9 lest perhaps, being filled, I might be enticed into denial, and say: ‘Who is the Lord?’ Or, being compelled by destitution, I might steal, and then perjure myself in the name of my God.
10 N’accuse pas un serviteur devant son maître: s’il te maudissait tu serais bien puni.	10 Do not accuse a servant to his lord, lest he curse you, and you fall.
11 Il y a des gens qui maudissent leur père et ne bénissent pas leur mère,	11 There is a generation which curses their father, and which does not bless their mother.
12 des gens qui se considèrent purs, mais leurs souillures n’ont pas été lavées,	12 There is a generation which seems pure to themselves, and yet they are not even washed from their filthiness.
13 des gens dont les yeux sont méprisants et le regard hautain,	13 There is a generation, whose eyes have been elevated, and their eyelids are lifted on high.
14 des gens avec des dents comme des épées et des mâchoires comme des couteaux, qui dévorent les humbles dans le pays et les pauvres du peuple!	14 There is a generation which has swords in place of teeth, and which commands their molars to devour the indigent from the earth and the poor from among men.
15 La sangsue a deux filles, elles s’appellent “Donne!” et “Donne!” Il sont trois qui n’en ont jamais assez, et quatre qui ne disent jamais: “Cela suffit!”:	15 The leech has two daughters, who say, ‘Bring, bring.’ Three things are insatiable, and a fourth never says ‘Enough’:
16 le séjour des morts, la femme stérile, la terre qui manque d’eau. Le feu non plus ne dit jamais: “C’est assez!”	16 Hell, and the mouth of the womb, and a land that is not filled with water. And truly, fire never says, ‘Enough.’
17 L’œil qui défie son père et refuse d’obéir à sa mère, les corbeaux du torrent le crèveront, les petits de l’aigle le dévoreront.	17 The eye of one who mocks his father and who despises the childbearing of his mother, let the ravens of the torrent tear it out, and let the sons of the eagles consume it.
18 Il y a trois choses qui me dépassent, et quatre que je ne peux savoir:	18 Three things are difficult for me, and about a fourth, I am nearly ignorant:
19 où est passé l’aigle dans le ciel, et le serpent sur le rocher, et le navire en haute mer? Et comment l’homme est-il passé par la femme?	19 the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a serpent on a rock, the way of a ship in the middle of the sea, and the way of a man in adolescence.
20 Vois comment fait la femme adultère: elle a mangé, puis elle s’est essuyé la bouche: “Je n’ai rien fait de mal!”	20 Such is the way also of an adulterous woman, who eats, and wiping her mouth, says: “I have done no evil.”
21 Trois choses font trembler la terre, il y en a quatre qu’elle ne peut supporter:	21 By three things, the earth is moved, and a fourth it is not able to sustain:
22 l’esclave qui devient roi, le fou qui mange tout à sa guise,	22 by a slave when he reigns, by the foolish when he has been filled with food,
23 la fille détestable qui trouve un mari, la servante qui supplante sa maîtresse!	23 by a hateful woman when she has been taken in matrimony, and by a handmaid when she has been heir to her mistress.
24 Il sont quatre sur terre, petits, mais qui dépassent tous les autres en sagesse:	24 Four things are least upon the earth, and they are wiser than the wise:
25 les fourmis sont un peuple chétif, mais elles font l’été leurs provisions;	25 the ants, an infirm people who provide food for themselves at the harvest,
26 les damans sont sans défense, mais ils se trouvent des abris au milieu des rochers;	26 the rabbit, a sickened people who make their bed upon the rock.
27 les sauterelles n’ont pas de roi, mais elles savent marcher en rangs disciplinés;	27 The locust has no king, but they all depart by their troops.
28 et puis le lézard: on le prend avec la main, mais tu le trouves dans le palais des rois.	28 The lizard supports itself on hands and dwells in the buildings of kings.
29 Ils sont trois à avoir belle allure, quatre même dont la démarche est belle:	29 There are three things that advance well, and a fourth that marches happily on:
30 le lion, le plus vaillant des animaux, qui ne recule devant rien;	30 a lion, the strongest of beasts, who fears nothing that he meets,
31 le coq, qui se dresse fièrement, et encore le bouc; et puis le roi en tête de son armée.	31 a rooster prepared at the loins, likewise a ram, and a king, whom none can resist.
32 Si tu as été assez bête pour t’emporter, reprends-toi et mets la main devant la bouche.	32 There is one who has appeared foolish, after he was lifted up on high; for if he had understood, he would have placed his hand over his mouth.
33 Car en donnant des coups sur la crème elle devient du beurre, un coup sur le nez fait jaillir le sang, et un coup de colère provoque des querelles.	33 But whoever strongly squeezes the udder to bring out the milk, presses out butter. And whoever violently blows his nose, brings out blood. And whoever provokes wrath, brings forth discord.”
