Giosuè 11

LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Quando ne ebbe notizia Iabin, re di Azor, mandò dei messi ad informare Iobab, re di Madon, il re di Simron, il re di Acsaf,	1 When Jabin king of Hazor heard about this, he sent word to Jobab king of Merom, to the king ofShimron, to the king of Achshaph
2 e i re che erano a settentrione, sulle montagne, nell'Araba, a sud di Chinarot, nel bassopiano e sulle colline di Dor, verso il mare.	2 and to the kings in the northern highlands, in the plain south of Chinneroth, and those in the lowlandsand on the slopes of Dor to the west.
3 I Cananei si trovavano a oriente e ad occidente, e gli Amorrei, gli Hittiti, i Perizziti, i Gebusei sulle montagne, gli Evei ai piedi dell'Ermon, nella regione di Mizpa.	3 To eastward and to westward lived the Canaanites: in the highlands, the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzitesand Jebusites; the Hivites, at the foot of Hermon in the area of Mizpah.
4 Essi uscirono in campo con tutti i loro eserciti, una moltitudine ingente, come la sabbia che è sulla spiaggia del mare, con cavalli e carri in grande quantità.	4 They set out with al their troops, a people as numerous as the sands of the sea, with a huge numberof horses and chariots.
5 Datisi convegno, tutti questi re vennero ad accamparsi insieme presso le acque di Merom, per combattere contro Israele.	5 These kings, having al agreed on a meeting place, came and set up camp together at the Waters ofMerom, to fight Israel.
6 Ma il Signore rassicurò Giosuè: "Non aver timore di quelli, perché domani, alla stessa ora, io li mostrerò tutti uccisi davanti a Israele; farai tagliare i garretti ai loro cavalli e farai bruciare i loro carri".	6 Yahweh then said to Joshua, 'Do not be afraid of them, for by this time tomorrow I shal hand them alover, cut to pieces, to Israel; you will hamstring their horses and burn their chariots.'
7 Così Giosuè e con lui tutti quelli atti alla guerra piombarono all'improvviso su di loro presso le acque di Merom e li assalirono.	7 With al his warriors Joshua caught them unawares near the Waters of Merom and fel on them.
8 Il Signore li dette in mano d'Israele, che li batté e li inseguì fino a Sidone la Grande e sino a Misrefot-Maim e fino nella vallata di Mizpa verso oriente, facendone una strage tale da non lasciarne uno superstite.	8 Yahweh put them at Israel's mercy and they defeated them and pursued them as far as Sidon theGreat, and as far as Misrephoth to the west, and as far as the Vale of Mizpah to the east; they harried them untilnot one of them was left alive.
9 Giosuè li trattò secondo quanto aveva detto il Signore, fece tagliare i garretti ai loro cavalli e fece bruciare i loro carri.	9 Joshua treated them as Yahweh had told him; he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots.
10 In quello stesso tempo Giosuè, voltandosi, prese Azor e uccise di spada il suo re, perché Azor era stata già la capitale di tutti quei regni.	10 Joshua then turned back and captured Hazor, putting its king to the sword. Hazor in olden days wasthe capital of all these kingdoms.
11 Passò a fil di spada tutti quelli che vi si trovavano, votandoli allo sterminio; non lasciò anima viva e fece dar fuoco ad Azor.	11 In compliance with the curse of destruction, they put every living creature there to the sword. Not aliving soul was left, and Hazor was burnt to the ground.
12 Giosuè prese tutte le città di quei re e tutti i loro re e li passò a fil di spada, votandoli allo sterminio, come aveva ordinato Mosè, servo del Signore.	12 Al these royal cities and al their kings Joshua put to the sword in compliance with the curse ofdestruction, as Moses, servant of Yahweh, had ordered.
13 Israele però non bruciò nessuna delle città che stavano sulle loro colline, ad eccezione di Azor, che Giosuè fece bruciare.	13 Yet of al these towns standing on their mounds, Israel burned none, apart from Hazor, burnt byJoshua.
14 Tutto il bottino di quelle città e il bestiame i figli d'Israele lo saccheggiarono per sé, ma passarono a fil di spada tutti gli uomini, fino a sterminarli tutti, senza lasciare anima viva.	14 Al the spoils of these towns, including the livestock, the Israelites took as booty for themselves. Butthey put al the human beings to the sword til they had destroyed them completely; they did not leave a livingsoul.
15 Come aveva ordinato il Signore al suo servo Mosè, così comandò Mosè a Giosuè e così fece Giosuè: non trascurò nulla di quello che il Signore aveva ordinato a Mosè.	15 What Yahweh had ordered his servant Moses, Moses in turn had ordered Joshua, and Joshuacarried it out, leaving nothing undone of what Yahweh had ordered Moses.
16 Così Giosuè prese tutto quel paese: le montagne, tutto il Negheb, tutta la terra di Gosen, il bassopiano, l'Araba, le montagne d'Israele e i loro bassipiani.	16 In consequence, Joshua captured this entire country: the highlands, the whole Negeb and the wholeof Goshen, the lowlands, the Arabah, the highlands and lowlands of Israel.
17 Dal monte Calak, che sale verso Seir, fino a Baal-Gad, nella valle del Libano, ai piedi del monte Ermon; di tutti i loro re s'impadronì e li sconfisse e li fece uccidere.	17 From Mount Halak, which rises towards Seir, to Baal-Gad in the Vale of Lebanon at the foot of MountHermon, he captured al their kings, struck them down and put them to death.
18 Molto tempo Giosuè ebbe a combattere con tutti quei re.	18 For many a day Joshua made war on al these kings;
19 Non ci fu una città che abbia fatto pace con i figli d'Israele, eccetto gli Evei che abitavano in Gabaon; perciò le presero tutte combattendo.	19 no city had made peace with the Israelites except the Hivites who lived at Gibeon; al the rest hadbeen captured in battle.
20 Tale era infatti il disegno del Signore, che il loro cuore si ostinasse a proclamare la guerra a Israele, affinché venissero votati allo sterminio senza pietà di loro e fossero estirpati, come aveva comandato il Signore a Mosè.	20 For Yahweh had decided to harden the hearts of these men, so that they would engage Israel inbattle and thus come under the curse of destruction and so receive no quarter but be exterminated, as Yahwehhad ordered Moses.
21 In quel tempo Giosuè si mosse e sterminò anche gli Anakiti dalle montagne: da Ebron, da Debir, da Anab, da tutte le montagne di Giuda e da tutta la parte montana d'Israele e li votò, con le loro città, allo sterminio.	21 Joshua then went and wiped out the Anakim of the highlands, of Hebron, of Debir, of Anab, of all thehighlands of Judah and of all the highlands of Israel; he delivered them and their towns over to the curse ofdestruction.
22 Non rimasero Anakiti nella terra dei figli d'Israele; rimasero soltanto a Gaza, a Gat e in Asdod.	22 No Anakim were left in the territory of the Israelites, except at Gaza, Gath and Ashdod.
23 Giosuè così occupò tutto il paese, come aveva detto il Signore a Mosè e a Giosuè, e lo dette in eredità a Israele, secondo la loro ripartizione in tribù. Quindi il paese si riposò dalla guerra.	23 Joshua captured the entire country, just as Yahweh had told Moses, and he gave it as heritage toIsrael, to be shared out between their tribes. And the country had rest from warfare.
