| 1 Vogliamo poi manifestarvi, o fratelli, la grazia di Dio accordata alle chiese della Macedonia: | 1 We want you to know, brethren, about the grace of God which has been shown in the churches of Macedonia, |
| 2 nonostante la lunga prova della tribolazione, la loro gioia è grande e la profonda povertà in cui si trovano ha traboccato della ricchezza della loro generosità. | 2 for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of liberality on their part. |
| 3 Posso testimoniare che hanno dato secondo le loro forze e anche più delle loro forze, spontaneamente, | 3 For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own free will, |
| 4 chiedendoci con insistenza la grazia di prendere parte a questo servizio a favore dei santi, | 4 begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints-- |
| 5 più di quanto non avremmo osato sperare, offrendosi prima al Signore e poi a noi, conforme alla volontà di Dio. | 5 and this, not as we expected, but first they gave themselves to the Lord and to us by the will of God. |
| 6 Onde abbiamo pregato Tito di portare a compimento fra voi quest'opera di benevolenza, lui che l'aveva incominciata. | 6 Accordingly we have urged Titus that as he had already made a beginning, he should also complete among you this gracious work. |
| 7 Su, dunque: come vi segnalate in ogni cosa, nella fede e nella parola, nella dottrina e in ogni zelo e nella carità che vi abbiamo insegnato, così distinguetevi anche in quest'opera di benevolenza. | 7 Now as you excel in everything--in faith, in utterance, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in your love for us--see that you excel in this gracious work also. |
| 8 Non ve ne faccio un obbligo, ma vorrei provare alla stregua dello zelo degli altri la sincerità della vostra carità. | 8 I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine. |
| 9 Conoscete la benevolenza del Signore nostro Gesù Cristo: da ricco che era, si è fatto povero per voi, perché voi diventaste ricchi dalla sua povertà. | 9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. |
| 10 E' un consiglio che vi do: si tratta di cosa vantaggiosa per voi, che fin dall'anno passato siete stati i primi non solo a intraprenderla, ma a desiderarla. | 10 And in this matter I give my advice: it is best for you now to complete what a year ago you began not only to do but to desire, |
| 11 Ora dunque realizzatela, perché come vi fu la prontezza del volere, così anche vi sia il compimento, secondo i vostri mezzi; | 11 so that your readiness in desiring it may be matched by your completing it out of what you have. |
| 12 se infatti c'è la prontezza del volere, essa riesce gradita secondo quello che si possiede, non secondo quello che non si possiede. | 12 For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what a man has, not according to what he has not. |
| 13 Non si tratta invero di disagiare voi per sollevare gli altri, ma perché vi sia eguaglianza; | 13 I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, |
| 14 nel momento attuale la vostra abbondanza scenda sulla loro indigenza, affinché anche la loro abbondanza torni a vantaggio della vostra indigenza, onde vi sia eguaglianza, come sta scritto: | 14 but that as a matter of equality your abundance at the present time should supply their want, so that their abundance may supply your want, that there may be equality. |
| 15 Chi aveva molto non ne soverchiò e chi aveva poco non sentì la mancanza. | 15 As it is written, "He who gathered much had nothing over, and he who gathered little had no lack." |
| 16 Siano rese grazie a Dio che infonde la medesima sollecitudine per voi nel cuore di Tito! | 16 But thanks be to God who puts the same earnest care for you into the heart of Titus. |
| 17 Egli ha accolto l'invito e, pieno di zelo, è partito spontaneamente per venire da voi. | 17 For he not only accepted our appeal, but being himself very earnest he is going to you of his own accord. |
| 18 Abbiamo mandato con lui il fratello che ha lode in tutte le chiese a motivo del vangelo; | 18 With him we are sending the brother who is famous among all the churches for his preaching of the gospel; |
| 19 egli è stato designato dalle chiese come nostro compagno in quest'opera di benevolenza che stiamo realizzando per la gloria del Signore, e per l'impulso del nostro cuore. | 19 and not only that, but he has been appointed by the churches to travel with us in this gracious work which we are carrying on, for the glory of the Lord and to show our good will. |
| 20 Vogliamo evitare che qualcuno possa biasimarci per queste somme che vengono amministrate da noi. | 20 We intend that no one should blame us about this liberal gift which we are administering, |
| 21 Ci preoccupiamo infatti di comportarci bene non soltanto davanti al Signore, ma anche davanti agli uomini. | 21 for we aim at what is honorable not only in the Lord's sight but also in the sight of men. |
| 22 Con loro abbiamo inviato anche il nostro fratello di cui abbiamo più volte sperimentato lo zelo in molte circostanze, ed è ora più zelante che mai per la grande fiducia che ha in voi. | 22 And with them we are sending our brother whom we have often tested and found earnest in many matters, but who is now more earnest than ever because of his great confidence in you. |
| 23 Tito è dunque mio compagno e collaboratore presso di voi; i nostri fratelli sono delegati delle chiese, gloria di Cristo. | 23 As for Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker in your service; and as for our brethren, they are messengers of the churches, the glory of Christ. |
| 24 Date dunque a loro la prova del vostro affetto e della legittimità del nostro vanto per voi davanti a tutte le chiese. | 24 So give proof, before the churches, of your love and of our boasting about you to these men. |
