Lettera ai Romani 11

1 Mi dico allora: Dio ripudiò forse il suo popolo? Non sia mai detto! Infatti io stesso sono un israelita, della discendenza di Abramo, della tribù di Beniamino.	1 I ask, then, has God rejected his people? By no means! I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin.
2 Dio non ripudiò il suo popolo, da lui eletto nella sua prescienza. O non sapete che cosa dice la Scrittura a proposito di Elia, quando questi interpella Dio contro Israele?	2 God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the scripture says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel?
3 Signore, uccisero i tuoi profeti, demolirono i tuoi altari fin dalle fondamenta; unico superstite sono rimasto io, ed essi cercano di togliermi la vita.	3 "Lord, they have killed thy prophets, they have demolished thy altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life."
4 Ma che cosa dice la risposta divina? Riservai per me settemila uomini, i quali non piegarono i ginocchi davanti a Baal.	4 But what is God's reply to him? "I have kept for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal."
5 Ugualmente, anche al presente vi è un residuo, scelto per grazia.	5 So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace.
6 Ma se c'è per grazia, non è in forza delle opere, altrimenti la grazia non sarebbe più grazia.	6 But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.
7 Che dunque? Quello che Israele cerca non l'ha ottenuto; l'hanno ottenuto invece gli eletti. Gli altri furono induriti,	7 What then? Israel failed to obtain what it sought. The elect obtained it, but the rest were hardened,
8 secondo quanto sta scritto: Dio diede loro uno spirito di torpore, occhi tali da non vedere e orecchi da non udire, fino al giorno d'oggi.	8 as it is written, "God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that should not see and ears that should not hear, down to this very day."
9 E Davide dice: La loro mensa divenga un laccio, un trabocchetto, una pietra d'inciampo, e sia la loro retribuzione.	9 And David says, "Let their table become a snare and a trap, a pitfall and a retribution for them;
10 I loro occhi siano ottenebrati così da non vedere e fa' curvare loro costantemente la schiena.	10 let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see, and bend their backs for ever."
11 Mi dico allora: inciamparono in modo da cadere definitivamente? Non sia mai detto! Ma a motivo della loro caduta la salvezza pervenne ai gentili, in modo da eccitare la loro emulazione.	11 So I ask, have they stumbled so as to fall? By no means! But through their trespass salvation has come to the Gentiles, so as to make Israel jealous.
12 Ma se la loro caduta è una ricchezza per il mondo e la loro perdita una ricchezza per i gentili, quanto più lo sarà la loro totalità!	12 Now if their trespass means riches for the world, and if their failure means riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their full inclusion mean!
13 A voi, gentili, poi dico: in qualità di apostolo dei gentili onoro il mio ministero,	13 Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry
14 nella speranza di poter provocare a emulazione coloro che sono del mio sangue e salvare alcuni di essi.	14 in order to make my fellow Jews jealous, and thus save some of them.
15 Se infatti la loro ripulsa è riconciliazione per il mondo, che cosa sarà mai la loro riammissione, se non una risurrezione?	15 For if their rejection means the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance mean but life from the dead?
16 Se infatti sono sante le primizie, lo è anche la massa della pasta; e se la radice è santa, lo sono anche i rami.	16 If the dough offered as first fruits is holy, so is the whole lump; and if the root is holy, so are the branches.
17 Se ora alcuni rami sono stati tagliati via e tu, essendo un olivastro selvatico, sei stato innestato al posto loro, venendo così a partecipare della linfa che proviene dalla radice dell'olivo,	17 But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, a wild olive shoot, were grafted in their place to share the richness of the olive tree,
18 non ti gloriare a discredito dei rami! Poiché, se tu ti glori, non sei tu a sostenere la radice, ma è la radice che sostiene te.	18 do not boast over the branches. If you do boast, remember it is not you that support the root, but the root that supports you.
19 Dirai comunque: i rami furono tagliati via perché io fossi innestato.	19 You will say, "Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in."
20 Bene: essi furono tagliati via a causa della loro mancanza di fede, mentre tu stai in piedi in forza della fede. Non ti abbandonare all'orgoglio, ma temi.	20 That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand fast only through faith. So do not become proud, but stand in awe.
21 Se Dio infatti non risparmiò i rami naturali, non risparmierà neppure te.	21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you.
22 Vedi dunque la bontà e la severità di Dio: la severità nei riguardi di coloro che sono caduti, la bontà di Dio nei riguardi tuoi, se tu rimani aderente a questa bontà; altrimenti tu pure sarai tagliato via.	22 Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God's kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness; otherwise you too will be cut off.
23 Anch'essi, se non rimarranno nella loro incredulità, saranno innestati: Dio infatti ha la potenza di innestarli di nuovo.	23 And even the others, if they do not persist in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again.
24 Se tu, in effetti, sei stato tagliato via da un olivastro che era secondo la tua natura, e contro la tua natura sei stato innestato in una magnifica pianta di olivo, quanto a maggior ragione saranno innestati nel proprio olivo coloro che sono della sua stessa natura!	24 For if you have been cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these natural branches be grafted back into their own olive tree.
25 Non voglio infatti che ignoriate, fratelli, il piano misterioso di Dio, in modo che non v'insuperbiate in voi stessi. L'indurimento parziale d'Israele è in atto fino a che la totalità dei gentili sia entrata (nel regno),	25 Lest you be wise in your own conceits, I want you to understand this mystery, brethren: a hardening has come upon part of Israel, until the full number of the Gentiles come in,
26 e così tutto Israele sarà salvato, come sta scritto: Da Sion uscirà il Salvatore. Egli allontanerà le empietà da Giacobbe;	26 and so all Israel will be saved; as it is written, "The Deliverer will come from Zion, he will banish ungodliness from Jacob";
27 e questo è il patto mio con loro, quando toglierò i loro peccati.	27 "and this will be my covenant with them when I take away their sins."
28 Per quanto riguarda il vangelo, sono nemici a vostro vantaggio; ma per quanto riguarda l'elezione, sono amati a causa dei padri,	28 As regards the gospel they are enemies of God, for your sake; but as regards election they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers.
29 poiché i doni e la chiamata di Dio sono irrevocabili.	29 For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.
30 Come, infatti, voi una volta disobbediste a Dio ed ora siete stati fatti oggetto di misericordia per la loro disobbedienza,	30 Just as you were once disobedient to God but now have received mercy because of their disobedience,
31 così anch'essi sono ora divenuti disobbedienti in vista della misericordia da usarsi verso di voi, affinché anch'essi ottengano misericordia.	31 so they have now been disobedient in order that by the mercy shown to you they also may receive mercy.
32 Dio infatti ha rinchiuso tutti nella disobbedienza, per usare misericordia a tutti.	32 For God has consigned all men to disobedience, that he may have mercy upon all.
33 O profondità della ricchezza, sapienza e conoscenza di Dio! Quanto insindacabili sono i suoi giudizi e incomprensibili le sue vie!	33 O the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!
34 Chi conobbe infatti la mente del Signore? O chi fu suo consigliere?	34 "For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?"
35 O chi gli dette per primo perché ne possa avere il contraccambio?	35 "Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?"
36 Poiché tutte le cose provengono da lui, esistono in grazia di lui, tendono a lui. A lui gloria per i secoli. Amen.	36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory for ever. Amen.
