LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Entrato nella città di Gerico, la stava attraversando.	1 He entered Jericho and was going through the town
2 Or un uomo di nome Zaccheo, che era capo dei pubblicani e ricco,	2 and suddenly a man whose name was Zacchaeus made his appearance; he was one of the senior taxcol ectors and a wealthy man.
3 cercava di vedere chi fosse Gesù, ma non ci riusciva; c'era infatti molta gente ed egli era troppo piccolo di statura.	3 He kept trying to see which Jesus was, but he was too short and could not see him for the crowd;
4 Allora corse avanti e, per poterlo vedere, si arrampicò sopra un sicomoro, perché Gesù doveva passare di là.	4 so he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to catch a glimpse of Jesus who was to pass that way.
5 Gesù, quando arrivò in quel punto, alzò gli occhi e gli disse: "Zaccheo, scendi in fretta, perché oggi devo fermarmi a casa tua".	5 When Jesus reached the spot he looked up and spoke to him, 'Zacchaeus, come down. Hurry,because I am to stay at your house today.'
6 Scese subito e lo accolse con gioia.	6 And he hurried down and welcomed him joyful y.
7 Vedendo ciò, tutti mormoravano: "E' andato ad alloggiare in casa di un peccatore!".	7 They al complained when they saw what was happening. 'He has gone to stay at a sinner's house,'they said.
8 Ma Zaccheo, alzatosi, disse al Signore: "Signore, io do ai poveri la metà dei miei beni e se ho rubato a qualcuno gli restituisco il quadruplo".	8 But Zacchaeus stood his ground and said to the Lord, 'Look, sir, I am going to give half my property tothe poor, and if I have cheated anybody I wil pay him back four times the amount.'
9 Gesù gli rispose: "Oggi la salvezza è entrata in questa casa, perché anch'egli è figlio di Abramo.	9 And Jesus said to him, 'Today salvation has come to this house, because this man too is a son ofAbraham;
10 Infatti il Figlio dell'uomo è venuto a cercare e a salvare ciò che era perduto".	10 for the Son of man has come to seek out and save what was lost.'
11 Mentre essi stavano ad ascoltare queste cose, Gesù raccontò quest'altra parabola, perché era vicino a Gerusalemme ed essi credevano che la manifestazione del regno di Dio fosse imminente.	11 While the people were listening to this he went on to tel a parable, because he was near Jerusalemand they thought that the kingdom of God was going to show itself then and there.
12 Disse dunque: "Un uomo di nobile famiglia se ne andò in un paese lontano per ricevere il titolo di re, e poi ritornare.	12 Accordingly he said, 'A man of noble birth went to a distant country to be appointed king and thenreturn.
13 Chiamati dieci dei suoi servi, diede loro dieci mine, dicendo: "Fatele fruttificare fino a quando tornerò".	13 He summoned ten of his servants and gave them ten pounds, tel ing them, "Trade with these, until Iget back."
14 Ma i suoi concittadini lo odiavano e gli mandarono dietro alcuni rappresentanti a dire: "Non vogliamo che costui regni su di noi".	14 But his compatriots detested him and sent a delegation to fol ow him with this message, "We do notwant this man to be our king."
15 Ma quell'uomo divenne re e ritornò al suo paese e fece chiamare i servi ai quali aveva consegnato il denaro, per vedere quanto ciascuno ne avesse ricavato.	15 'Now it happened that on his return, having received his appointment as king, he sent for thoseservants to whom he had given the money, to find out what profit each had made by trading.
16 Si fece avanti il primo e disse: "Signore, la tua mina ne ha fruttato dieci".	16 The first came in, "Sir," he said, "your one pound has brought in ten."
17 Gli rispose: "Bene, servo buono; poiché sei stato fedele nel poco, ricevi il governo sopra dieci città".	17 He replied, "Wel done, my good servant! Since you have proved yourself trustworthy in a very smalthing, you shal have the government of ten cities."
18 Poi venne il secondo e disse: "Signore, la tua mina ne ha fruttato cinque".	18 Then came the second, "Sir," he said, "your one pound has made five."
19 Anche a questo disse: "Anche tu avrai l'amministrazione di cinque città".	19 To this one also he said, "And you shal be in charge of five cities."
20 Infine si fece avanti l'altro servo e disse: "Signore, ecco la tua mina che ho nascosto in un fazzoletto.	20 Next came the other, "Sir," he said, "here is your pound. I put it away safely wrapped up in a cloth
21 Ho avuto paura di te, perché sei un uomo severo: pretendi quello che non hai depositato e raccogli quello che non hai seminato".	21 because I was afraid of you; for you are an exacting man: you gather in what you have not laid outand reap what you have not sown."
22 Gli rispose: "Dalle tue parole ti giudico, servo malvagio! Sapevi che sono un uomo severo, che pretendo quello che non ho depositato e raccolgo quello che non ho seminato.	22 He said to him, "You wicked servant! Out of your own mouth I condemn you. So you knew that I wasan exacting man, gathering in what I have not laid out and reaping what I have not sown?
23 Perché allora non hai depositato il mio denaro alla banca? Al mio ritorno l'avrei ritirato con l'interesse".	23 Then why did you not put my money in the bank? On my return I could have drawn it out withinterest."
24 Disse poi ai presenti: "Toglietegli la mina e datela a colui che ne ha dieci".	24 And he said to those standing by, "Take the pound from him and give it to the man who has tenpounds."
25 Gli risposero: "Signore, ne ha già dieci!".	25 And they said to him, "But, sir, he has ten pounds . . ."
26 "Vi dico: chi ha riceverà ancora di più; invece a chi ha poco sarà tolto anche quello che ha.	26 "I tel you, to everyone who has wil be given more; but anyone who has not wil be deprived even ofwhat he has.
27 Intanto, conducete qui i miei nemici, quelli che non mi volevano come loro re. Conduceteli qui e uccideteli alla mia presenza".	27 "As for my enemies who did not want me for their king, bring them here and execute them in mypresence." '
28 Dopo questi discorsi, Gesù camminava in testa agli altri, salendo a Gerusalemme.	28 When he had said this he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
29 Quando fu vicino a Bètfage e a Betània, presso il monte detto degli Ulivi, mandò avanti due discepoli dicendo:	29 Now it happened that when he was near Bethphage and Bethany, close by the Mount of Olives as itis cal ed, he sent two of the disciples, saying,
30 "Andate nel villaggio che sta qui di fronte; entrando, troverete un asinello legato sul quale non è mai salito nessuno; slegatelo e portatelo qui.	30 'Go to the vil age opposite, and as you enter it you wil find a tethered colt that no one has ever yetridden. Untie it and bring it here.
31 Se qualcuno vi chiederà: "Perché lo slegate?", voi risponderete così: "Il Signore ne ha bisogno".	31 If anyone asks you, "Why are you untying it?" you are to say this, "The Master needs it." '
32 I due discepoli andarono e trovarono le cose come egli aveva detto.	32 The messengers went off and found everything just as he had told them.
33 Mentre slegavano il puledro, i proprietari domandarono loro: "Perché slegate il puledro?".	33 As they were untying the colt, its owners said, 'Why are you untying it?'
34 Essi risposero: "Il Signore ne ha bisogno".	34 and they answered, 'The Master needs it.'
35 Allora lo condussero a Gesù e, dopo aver coperto il puledro con i loro mantelli, vi fecero montare Gesù.	35 So they took the colt to Jesus and, throwing their cloaks on its back, they lifted Jesus on to it.
36 Via via che Gesù avanzava, la gente stendeva i mantelli sulla strada.	36 As he moved off, they spread their cloaks in the road,
37 Quando fu vicino alla discesa del monte degli Ulivi, tutta la folla dei discepoli, esultando, cominciò a lodare a gran voce Dio per tutti i miracoli che aveva visto.	37 and now, as he was approaching the downward slope of the Mount of Olives, the whole group ofdisciples joyful y began to praise God at the top of their voices for all the miracles they had seen.
38 Gridavano: "Benedetto colui che viene nel nome del Signore: egli è il re! In cielo pace e gloria nel più alto dei cieli".	38 They cried out: Blessed is he who is coming as King in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven andglory in the highest heavens!
39 Allora alcuni farisei che si trovavano tra la folla gli dissero: "Maestro, fa' tacere i tuoi discepoli!".	39 Some Pharisees in the crowd said to him, 'Master, reprove your disciples,'
40 Ma egli rispose: "Vi dico che se taceranno costoro, si metteranno a gridare le pietre".	40 but he answered, 'I tell you, if these keep silence, the stones wil cry out.'
41 Quando fu vicino, alla vista della città, pianse su di essa,	41 As he drew near and came in sight of the city he shed tears over it
42 dicendo: "Oh, se tu pure conoscessi, in questo giorno, quello che occorre alla tua pace! Ma ora ciò è stato nascosto ai tuoi occhi.	42 and said, 'If you too had only recognised on this day the way to peace! But in fact it is hidden fromyour eyes!
43 Verranno sopra di te giorni nei quali i tuoi nemici ti circonderanno di trincee. Ti assedieranno e ti stringeranno da ogni parte.	43 Yes, a time is coming when your enemies wil raise fortifications all round you, when they wil encircleyou and hem you in on every side;
44 Distruggeranno te e i tuoi abitanti, e non lasceranno in te pietra su pietra, perché tu non hai conosciuto il tempo nel quale sei stata visitata".	44 they wil dash you and the children inside your wal s to the ground; they wil leave not one stonestanding on another within you, because you did not recognise the moment of your visitation.'
45 Entrato poi nel tempio, si mise a cacciare quelli che facevano commercio,	45 Then he went into the Temple and began driving out those who were busy trading, saying to them,
46 dicendo loro: "La mia casa sarà casa di preghiera. Voi, invece, ne avete fatto una caverna di ladri!".	46 'According to scripture, my house shal be a house of prayer but you have turned it into a bandits'den.'
47 E insegnava ogni giorno nel tempio. I capi dei sacerdoti e i dottori della legge cercavano di farlo perire, e così anche i capi del popolo.	47 He taught in the Temple every day. The chief priests and the scribes, in company with the leadingcitizens, tried to do away with him,
48 Ma non sapevano come fare, perché tutto il popolo pendeva dalle sue labbra nell'ascoltarlo.	48 but they could not find a way to carry this out because the whole people hung on his words.
