| 1 Amate la giustizia, voi che governate la terra, pensate del Signore con bontà e con cuore semplice cercatelo, | 1 Love righteousness, you rulers of the earth, think of the Lord with uprightness, and seek him with sincerity of heart; |
| 2 perché si fa trovare da quanti non lo tentano e si manifesta a quanti non diffidano di lui. | 2 because he is found by those who do not put him to the test, and manifests himself to those who do not distrust him. |
| 3 Difatti i ragionamenti distorti separano da Dio, ma l'onnipotenza, messa alla prova, convince di delitto gli stolti. | 3 For perverse thoughts separate men from God, and when his power is tested, it convicts the foolish; |
| 4 La sapienza non entra in un'anima che opera il male, né dimora in un corpo schiavo del peccato. | 4 because wisdom will not enter a deceitful soul, nor dwell in a body enslaved to sin. |
| 5 Poiché il santo spirito dell'educazione fugge l'inganno, sta lontano dai ragionamenti insensati ed è allontanato al sopraggiungere dell'ingiustizia. | 5 For a holy and disciplined spirit will flee from deceit, and will rise and depart from foolish thoughts, and will be ashamed at the approach of unrighteousness. |
| 6 La sapienza è uno spirito che ama l'uomo, ma non lascerà impunito il bestemmiatore per i suoi discorsi, perché Dio è testimone dei suoi pensieri, sorvegliante leale del suo cuore e uditore della sua parola. | 6 For wisdom is a kindly spirit and will not free a blasphemer from the guilt of his words; because God is witness of his inmost feelings, and a true observer of his heart, and a hearer of his tongue. |
| 7 Lo spirito del Signore riempie l'universo e colui che tiene insieme ogni cosa, ne conosce la voce. | 7 Because the Spirit of the Lord has filled the world, and that which holds all things together knows what is said; |
| 8 Per questo non potrà restar nascosto chi pronuncia cose ingiuste né lo risparmierà la giustizia che corregge. | 8 therefore no one who utters unrighteous things will escape notice, and justice, when it punishes, will not pass him by. |
| 9 Sarà fatta un'inchiesta sui progetti dell'empio e l'eco delle sue parole giungerà fino al Signore, a condanna dei suoi misfatti; | 9 For inquiry will be made into the counsels of an ungodly man, and a report of his words will come to the Lord, to convict him of his lawless deeds; |
| 10 poiché un orecchio geloso ascolta ogni cosa e il sussurro delle mormorazioni non resta nascosto. | 10 because a jealous ear hears all things, and the sound of murmurings does not go unheard. |
| 11 Guardatevi dunque dall'inutile mormorazione, preservate la lingua dalla maldicenza, perché neppure una parola segreta andrà a vuoto, una bocca menzognera uccide l'anima. | 11 Beware then of useless murmuring, and keep your tongue from slander; because no secret word is without result, and a lying mouth destroys the soul. |
| 12 Smettete di ricercare la morte con gli errori della vostra vita, e di attirarvi la rovina con le opere delle vostre mani, | 12 Do not invite death by the error of your life, nor bring on destruction by the works of your hands; |
| 13 perché Dio non ha fatto la morte, né gode per la rovina dei viventi. | 13 because God did not make death, and he does not delight in the death of the living. |
| 14 Egli ha creato tutte le cose perché esistano; salubri sono le creature del mondo, in esse non c'è veleno mortifero, né il regno degl'inferi è sulla terra. | 14 For he created all things that they might exist, and the generative forces of the world are wholesome, and there is no destructive poison in them; and the dominion of Hades is not on earth. |
| 15 La giustizia infatti è immortale. | 15 For righteousness is immortal. |
| 16 Ma gli empi con gesti e con parole chiamano la morte, credendola amica, si consumano per essa e con essa hanno stretto alleanza, perché sono degni di essere del suo numero. | 16 But ungodly men by their words and deeds summoned death; considering him a friend, they pined away, and they made a covenant with him, because they are fit to belong to his party. |
