LA SACRA BIBBIA	CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAIN
1 Ho riflettuto su tutto ciò, e sono arrivato alla conclusione che i giusti, i sapienti e le loro azioni sono nelle mani di Dio. Gli uomini non conoscono nemmeno l'amore e l'odio; per quanto tutto si svolga davanti a loro.	1 I have drawn all these things through my heart, so that I might carefully understand. There are just men as well as wise men, and their works are in the hand of God. And yet a man does not know so much as whether he is worthy of love or of hatred.
2 Una stessa è la sorte che tocca a tutti, al giusto e all'empio, al buono e al cattivo, al puro e all'impuro, a chi sacrifica e a chi non sacrifica. Come il buono, così il peccatore, come chi giura, così chi teme di giurare.	2 But all things in the future remain uncertain, because all things happen equally to the just and to the impious, to the good and to the bad, to the pure and to the impure, to those who offer sacrifices and to those who despise sacrifices. As the good are, so also are sinners. As those who commit perjury are, so also are those who swear to the truth.
3 Questo male investe tutto ciò che si fa sotto il sole: la stessa sorte tocca a tutti e, per di più, il cuore dell'uomo è pieno di male. La follia è nel suo cuore durante la vita; e dopo: via, nel soggiorno dei morti.	3 This is a very great burden among all things that are done under the sun: that the same things happen to everyone. And when the hearts of the sons of men are filled with malice and contempt in their lives, afterwards they shall be dragged down to hell.
4 Finché uno è vivo, c'è speranza, perché sta meglio un cane vivo che un leone morto.	4 There is no one who lives forever, or who even has confidence in this regard. A living dog is better than a dead lion.
5 Infatti i vivi sanno che devono morire, ma i morti non sanno nulla; per loro non c'è più guadagno; il loro ricordo è andato nell'oblio.	5 For the living know that they themselves will die, yet truly the dead know nothing anymore, nor do they have any recompense. For the memory of them is forgotten.
6 Il loro amore, il loro odio, la loro ambizione, tutto ormai è scomparso. Non hanno ormai più parte alcuna con il mondo, con tutto ciò che si fa sotto il sole.	6 Likewise, love and hatred and envy have all perished together, nor have they any place in this age and in the work which is done under the sun.
7 E allora, via, mangia nella gioia il tuo pane e bevi di buon animo il tuo vino, ché, con questo, Dio ti è già stato benigno.	7 So then, go and eat your bread with rejoicing, and drink your wine with gladness. For your works are pleasing to God.
8 In ogni tempo siano candide le tue vesti, né manchi l'olio sopra il tuo capo.	8 Let your garments be white at all times, and let not oil be absent from your head.
9 Godi la vita con la donna che ami, giorno per giorno, durante la vita vana che ti è stata data sotto il sole. Ché questo è ciò che solo ti spetta nella vita e in tutta la fatica nella quale ti affatichi sotto il sole.	9 Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your uncertain life which have been given to you under the sun, during all the time of your vanity. For this is your portion in life and in your labor, with which you labor under the sun.
10 Tutto ciò che fai, fallo finché hai forza, perché non c'è né azione né pensiero, né scienza né sapienza, negli inferi dove tu stai andando.	10 Whatever your hand is able to do, do it earnestly. For neither work, nor reason, nor wisdom, nor knowledge will exist in death, toward which you are hurrying.
11 Ho scoperto un'altra cosa sotto il sole: la corsa non la vince chi è veloce, né la battaglia la vincono i più forti. Non è ai sapienti che tocca il pane, né agli abili le ricchezze e neanche agli accorti il favore, perché a tutti tocca secondo il tempo e il caso.	11 I turned myself toward another thing, and I saw that under the sun, the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor wealth to the learned, nor grace to the skilful: but there is a time and an end for all these things.
12 E per di più, l'uomo non conosce il giorno della sua morte: è come i pesci che si acchiappano con la rete fatale, è come gli uccelli che si acchiappano col laccio. Allo stesso modo è acchiappato anche l'uomo in un malo giorno che gli piomba addosso all'improvviso.	12 Man does not know his own end. But, just as fish are caught with a hook, and birds are captured with a snare, so are men seized in the evil time, when it will suddenly overwhelm them.
13 Ho visto anche quest'altro esempio di sapienza sotto il sole e per me ha molto valore:	13 This wisdom, likewise, I have seen under the sun, and I have examined it intensely.
14 c'era una piccola città con pochi abitanti e un grande re venne contro di essa. L'assediò e costruì contro di essa grandi fortificazioni.	14 There was a small city, with a few men in it. There came against it a great king, who surrounded it, and built fortifications all around it, and the blockade was completed.
15 In essa si trovò un uomo di umile origine, ma sapiente, che con la sua sapienza salvò la città. Eppure nessuno ha più ricordato quell'uomo umile.	15 And there was found within it, a poor and wise man, and he freed the city through his wisdom, and nothing was recorded afterward of that poor man.
16 Ho concluso allora che la sapienza vale più della forza, ma che la sapienza dell'umile è disprezzata e le sue parole non sono ascoltate.	16 And so, I declared that wisdom is better than strength. But how is it, then, that the wisdom of the poor man is treated with contempt, and his words are not heeded?
17 Le parole dei sapienti pronunciate con calma si capiscono meglio degli urli di un potente che parla in mezzo agli stolti.	17 The words of the wise are heard in silence, more so than the outcry of a prince among the foolish.
18 Vale più la sapienza che gli strumenti da guerra, ma un solo sbaglio può far perire un gran bene.	18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war. And whoever offends in one thing, shall lose many good things.
