Roboamo, giunto a Gerusalemme, convocò la stirpe di Giuda e di Beniamino, centottantamila guerrieri scelti, per muovere guerra contro Israele e così restituire il regno a Roboamo.1 Then Rehoboam went to Jerusalem, and he called together the entire house of Judah and of Benjamin, one hundred eighty thousand elect men of war, so that he might contend against Israel, and turn back his kingdom to himself.
Or la parola di Dio fu rivolta a Semaia, uomo di Dio:2 And the word of the Lord came to Shemaiah, the man of God, saying:
"Di' a Roboamo, figlio di Salomone, re di Giuda, e a tutti gli Israeliti che risiedono in Giuda e Beniamino:3 “Speak to Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, the king of Judah, and to all of Israel who are of Judah, or of Benjamin:
"Così dice il Signore: Non salite a combattere contro i vostri fratelli; ritorni ognuno a casa sua, perché sono io l'autore di questo fatto". Ascoltarono le parole del Signore e ritornarono indietro senza marciare contro Geroboamo.4 Thus says the Lord: You shall not ascend and fight against your brothers. Let each one return to his own house. For it is by my will that this has happened.” And when they had heard the word of the Lord, they turned back, and they did not continue on against Jeroboam.
Roboamo risiedette in Gerusalemme e trasformò in fortezze alcune città di Giuda.5 Then Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem, and he built fortified cities in Judah.
Ricostruì infatti Betlemme, Etam, Tekoa,6 And he built up Bethlehem, and Etam, and Tekoa,
Bet-Zur, Soco, Adullam,7 and also Bethzur, and Soco, and Adullam,
Gat, Maresa, Zif,8 indeed also Gath, and Mareshah, and Ziph,
Adoràim, Lachis, Azeka,9 then too Adoram, and Lachish, and Azekah,
Zor, Aialon ed Ebron; queste città fortificate si trovavano in Giuda e in Beniamino.10 as well as Zorah, and Aijalon, and Hebron, which were very fortified cities in Judah and in Benjamin.
Egli munì queste fortezze, vi prepose comandanti e stabilì magazzini di viveri, di olio e di vino.11 And when he had enclosed them with walls, he placed in them rulers, and storehouses of provisions, that is, of oil and wine.
In ogni città depositò grandi scudi e lance, rendendole estremamente potenti; Giuda e Beniamino appartennero a lui.12 Moreover, in each city he made an armory of shields and spears, and he strengthened them with the utmost diligence. And he ruled over Judah and Benjamin.
I sacerdoti e i leviti residenti in tutto Israele si riunirono da tutto il loro territorio presso di lui.13 Then the priests and Levites, who were in all of Israel, came to him from all their settlements,
I leviti, infatti, abbandonati i loro pascoli e le loro proprietà, si recarono in Giuda e a Gerusalemme, perché Geroboamo e i suoi figli li avevano esclusi dall'esercitare il sacerdozio del Signore.14 leaving behind their suburbs and possessions, and crossing over to Judah and to Jerusalem. For Jeroboam and his followers had cast them out, so that they could not exercise the priestly office to the Lord.
Egli invece si era costituito sacerdoti per le alture, per i satiri e per i vitelli che egli stesso aveva fabbricato.15 And he appointed for himself priests of high places, and of demons, and of calves that he had made.
Dietro l'esempio dei leviti, quanti da tutte le tribù d'Israele avevano deciso in cuor loro di ricercare il Signore, Dio d'Israele, si recarono a Gerusalemme, per offrire sacrifici al Signore, Dio dei loro padri.16 Moreover, out of all the tribes of Israel, whosoever would give their heart so that they sought the Lord God of Israel, they went to Jerusalem to immolate their victims before the Lord, the God of their fathers.
Così consolidarono il regno di Giuda e sostennero per tre anni Roboamo, figlio di Salomone, poiché per tre anni si camminò seguendo la via di Davide e di Salomone.17 And they strengthened the kingdom of Judah, and they confirmed Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, for three years. For they walked in the ways of David and of Solomon, but only for three years.
Roboamo si prese in moglie Macalat, figlia di Ierimot, figlio di Davide, e di Abiail figlia di Eliab, figlio di Iesse.18 Then Rehoboam took as wife Mahalath, the daughter of Jerimoth, son of David, and also Abihail, the daughter of Eliab, son of Jesse.
Essa gli partorì i figli Ieus, Semaria e Zaam.19 They bore sons for him: Jeush, and Shemariah, and Zaham.
Dopo di lei prese Maaca figlia di Assalonne, che gli partorì Abia, Attai, Ziza e Selomit.20 And also after her, he married Maacah, the daughter of Absalom, who bore for him Abijah, and Attai, and Ziza, and Shelomith.
Roboamo amò Maaca figlia di Assalonne più di tutte le altre mogli e concubine; egli prese diciotto mogli e sessanta concubine e generò ventotto figli e sessanta figlie.21 But Rehoboam loved Maacah, the daughter of Absalom, above all his wives and concubines. For he had taken eighteen wives and sixty concubines. And he conceived twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters.
Roboamo costituì Abia, figlio di Maaca, capo, cioè principe tra i suoi fratelli, perché aveva stabilito di farlo re.22 Truly, he appointed as the head, Abijah, the son of Maacah, to be the ruler over all his brothers. For he thought to make him king,
Con accortezza egli disseminò tutti gli altri suoi figli nelle varie regioni di Giuda e di Beniamino e nelle varie città fortificate; diede loro viveri in abbondanza e li provvide di molte mogli.23 since he was wiser and more powerful than all his sons, even in all the regions of Judah and Benjamin, and in all the fortified cities. And he provided them with very much food, and he sought many wives.
