1 Ben-Adàd, re di Aram, radunò l'intero suo esercito: aveva con sé trentadue re, cavalli e carri. Salì ad assediare Samaria e le diede l'assalto.	1 And Ben-hadad the king of Syria gathered all his host together: and there were thirty and two kings with him, and horses, and chariots: and he went up and besieged Samaria, and warred against it.
2 Poi inviò messaggeri nella città, ad Acab, re d'Israele,	2 And he sent messengers to Ahab king of Israel into the city, and said unto him, Thus saith Ben-hadad,
3 i quali gli dissero: "Così parla Ben-Adàd: "Il tuo argento e il tuo oro appartengono a me, le tue donne e i tuoi figli rimangono per te".	3 Thy silver and thy gold is mine; thy wives also and thy children, even the goodliest, are mine.
4 Il re d'Israele rispose in questi termini: "Come tu dici, o mio signore re. Io stesso e tutto quanto mi appartiene siamo tuoi".	4 And the king of Israel answered and said, My lord, O king, according to thy saying, I am thine, and all that I have.
5 Ma i messaggeri ritornarono a dire: "Così parla Ben-Adàd: "Io ho mandato a dirti che devi darmi il tuo argento, il tuo oro, le tue donne e i tuoi figli.	5 And the messengers came again, and said, Thus speaketh Ben-hadad, saying, Although I have sent unto thee, saying, Thou shalt deliver me thy silver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy children;
6 Quando domani, a quest'ora, ti manderò i miei servi, essi frugheranno il tuo palazzo e le case dei tuoi servi, s'impadroniranno di quanto tornerà gradito agli occhi loro e lo porteranno via".	6 Yet I will send my servants unto thee to morrow about this time, and they shall search thine house, and the houses of thy servants; and it shall be, that whatsoever is pleasant in thine eyes, they shall put it in their hand, and take it away.
7 Allora il re d'Israele convocò tutti gli anziani del paese e disse: "Vi accorgete facilmente che costui mi vuole del male; infatti mi ha mandato a chiedere le mie donne, i miei figli, dopo che io non gli avevo rifiutato né il mio argento né il mio oro".	7 Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, Mark, I pray you, and see how this man seeketh mischief: for he sent unto me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I denied him not.
8 Tutti gli anziani e tutto il popolo gli risposero: "Non prestare ascolto né acconsentire!".	8 And all the elders and all the people said unto him, Hearken not unto him, nor consent.
9 Allora Acab disse ai messaggeri di Ben-Adàd: "Riferite al re vostro signore: "Farò tutto quello che hai richiesto al tuo servo la prima volta, ma non posso adempiere quest'altra richiesta". I messaggeri partirono e riferirono la cosa.	9 Wherefore he said unto the messengers of Ben-hadad, Tell my lord the king, All that thou didst send for to thy servant at the first I will do: but this thing I may not do. And the messengers departed, and brought him word again.
10 Allora Ben-Adàd mandò a dirgli: "Che gli dèi mi facciano questo male e mi aggiungano ancora quest'altro, se la polvere di Samaria basterà a riempire una mano a tutto il popolo che mi segue".	10 And Ben-hadad sent unto him, and said, The gods do so unto me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people that follow me.
11 A sua volta il re d'Israele replicò: "Ditegli: "Chi indossa le armi non si vanti come chi le depone".	11 And the king of Israel answered and said, Tell him, Let not him that girdeth on his harness boast himself as he that putteth it off.
12 Quando Ben-Adàd udì questa risposta -- egli stava bevendo assieme ai re sotto le tende -- comandò ai suoi servi: "Disponetevi all'attacco"; ed essi si disposero contro la città.	12 And it came to pass, when Ben-hadad heard this message, as he was drinking, he and the kings in the pavilions,that he said unto his servants, Set yourselves in array. And they set themselves in array against the city.
13 Ed ecco un profeta s'avvicinò ad Acab, re d'Israele, e gli disse: "Così dice il Signore: "Hai visto tutta quella grande moltitudine? Ecco oggi stesso te la darò in mano e così saprai che io sono il Signore".	13 And, behold, there came a prophet unto Ahab king of Israel, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou seen all this great multitude? behold, I will deliver it in to thine hand this day; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD.
14 Acab disse: "Per mezzo di chi?". Quegli rispose: "Così dice il Signore: "Per mezzo dei giovani al servizio dei capi dei distretti". L'altro domandò ancora: "Chi inizierà la battaglia?". Il profeta rispose: "Tu stesso!".	14 And Ahab said, By whom? And he said, Thus saith the LORD, Even by the young men of the princes of the provinces. Then he said, Who shall order the battle? And he answered, Thou.
15 Allora il re passò in rassegna i giovani ch'erano al servizio dei capi dei distretti: erano in tutto duecentotrentadue. Poi passò in rassegna tutto il popolo, tutti i figli d'Israele: erano settemila.	15 Then he numbered the young men of the princes of the provinces, and they were two hundred and thirty two: and after them he numbered all the people, even all the children of Israel, being seven thousand.
16 Essi fecero una sortita sul mezzogiorno, mentre Ben-Adàd si ubriacava sotto le tende assieme ai trentadue re suoi alleati.	16 And they went out at noon. But Ben-hadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings that helped him.
17 Per primi uscirono i giovani al servizio dei capi dei distretti. E si mandò ad avvertire Ben-Adàd dicendogli: "Sono usciti uomini da Samaria".	17 And the young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Ben-hadad sent out, and they told him, saying, There are men come out of Samaria.
18 Egli rispose: "Se essi sono usciti con intenzioni pacifiche, catturateli vivi; se sono usciti per combattere, catturateli vivi ugualmente!".	18 And he said, Whether they be come out for peace, take them alive; or whether they be come out for war, take them alive.
19 Dalla città erano usciti i giovani al servizio dei capi dei distretti e l'esercito dietro di loro.	19 So these young men of the princes of the provinces came out of the city, and the army which followed them.
20 Ciascuno uccise il suo uomo. Aram si diede alla fuga e Israele lo inseguì. Ben-Adàd, re di Aram, si salvò fuggendo a cavallo; con lui erano alcuni cavalieri.	20 And they slew every one his man: and the Syrians fled; and Israel pursued them: and Ben-hadad the king of Syria escaped on an horse with the horsemen.
21 Il re d'Israele uscì, catturò i cavalli e i carri e inflisse ad Aram una grande sconfitta.	21 And the king of Israel went out, and smote the horses and chariots, and slew the Syrians with a great slaughter.
22 Allora il profeta s'avvicinò al re d'Israele e gli disse: "Orsù, fatti coraggio e considera bene quello che devi fare, poiché al volgere dell'anno il re di Aram salirà di nuovo contro di te".	22 And the prophet came to the king of Israel, and said unto him, Go, strengthen thy self, and mark, and see what thou doest: for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against thee.
23 I servi del re di Aram gli dissero: "Il loro Dio è un Dio delle montagne, per questo ci hanno vinti; ma se li impegneremo in battaglia nella pianura, certamente li vinceremo.	23 And the servants of the king of Syria said unto him, Their gods are gods of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we; but let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.
24 Fa' dunque in questo modo: rimuovi tutti i re dal loro posto sostituendoli con governatori.	24 And do this thing, Take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their rooms:
25 Per te recluta un esercito pari a quello che hai perso, con altrettanti cavalli e carri; quindi diamo loro battaglia nella pianura e certamente li vinceremo". Il re ascoltò il loro consiglio e fece così.	25 And number thee an army, like the army that thou hast lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot: and we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. And he hearkened unto their voice, and did so.
26 Al volgere dell'anno Ben-Adàd mobilitò gli Aramei e salì ad Afek, per dare battaglia ad Israele.	26 And it came to pass at the return of the year, that Ben-hadad numbered the Syrians, and went up to Aphek, to fight against Israel.
27 I figli d'Israele furono mobilitati e provvisti di viveri, poi mossero loro incontro. I figli d'Israele si accamparono di fronte a loro, come due greggi di capre, mentre gli Aramei riempivano la regione.	27 And the children of Israel were numbered, and were all present, and went against them: and the children of Israel pitched before them like two little flocks of kids; but the Syrians filled the country.
28 Allora un uomo di Dio s'avvicinò al re d'Israele e disse: "Così dice il Signore: "Poiché Aram ha asserito che il Signore è Dio delle montagne, ma non delle pianure, ti darò in mano tutta questa grande moltitudine e così saprai che io sono il Signore".	28 And there came a man of God, and spake unto the king of Israel, and said, Thus saith the LORD, Because the Syrians have said, The LORD is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys, therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
29 Per sette giorni stettero accampati gli uni di fronte agli altri, ma al settimo giorno si ingaggiò la battaglia e i figli d'Israele uccisero in un sol giorno centomila fanti di Aram.	29 And they pitched one over against the other seven days. And so it was, that in the seventh day the battle was joined: and the children of Israel slew of the Syrians an hundred thousand footmen in one day.
30 I superstiti fuggirono nella città di Afek, ma le mura caddero sui ventisettemila superstiti. Anche Ben-Adàd fuggì e andò nella città a nascondersi da una stanza all'altra.	30 But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and there a wall fell upon twenty and seven thousand of the men that were left. And Ben-hadad fled, and came into the city, into an inner chamber.
31 I suoi servi pertanto gli dissero: "Ecco, noi abbiamo sentito dire che i re della casa d'Israele sono re clementi; indossiamo sacchi ai fianchi e mettiamoci corde sulla testa e andiamo dal re d'Israele; chissà che non ti conservi la vita".	31 And his servants said unto him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings: let us, I pray thee, put sackcloth on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel: peradventure he will save thy life.
32 Essi cinsero i fianchi di sacchi e le teste di corda e andarono dal re d'Israele a dirgli: "Ben-Adàd, tuo servo, dice: "Salvami la vita!". Quegli rispose: "E' ancora vivo? Egli è mio fratello!".	32 So they girded sackcloth on their loins, and put ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, Thy servant Ben-hadad saith, I pray thee, let me live. And he said, Is he yet alive? he is my brother.
33 Quegli uomini presero ciò per buon auspicio e s'affrettarono ad averne l'assicurazione da lui domandandogli: "Ben-Adàd è tuo fratello?". Acab rispose: "Andate a prenderlo!". Allora Ben-Adàd gli uscì incontro ed egli lo fece salire sul suo carro.	33 Now the men did diligently observe whether any thing would come from him, and did hastily catch it: and they said, Thy brother Ben-hadad. Then he said, Go ye, bring him. Then Ben-hadad came forth to him; and he caused him to come up into the chariot.
34 Ben-Adàd gli disse: "Restituirò le città che mio padre tolse a tuo padre e tu stabilirai piazze commerciali a Damasco, come mio padre le aveva stabilite in Samaria". Acab disse: "A questo patto ti lascerò libero". Acab concluse questo trattato con lui e lo lasciò in libertà.	34 And Ben-hadad said unto him, The cities, which my father took from thy father, I will restore; and thou shalt make streets for thee in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria. Then said Ahab, I will send thee away with this covenant. So he made a covenant with him, and sent him away.
35 Uno dei discepoli dei profeti disse al suo compagno per ordine del Signore: "Colpiscimi!"; ma questi si rifiutò di colpirlo.	35 And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his neighbour in the word of the LORD, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man refused to smite him.
36 Allora gli disse il primo: "Poiché non hai ascoltato la voce del Signore, ecco che, appena ti sarai allontanato da me, il leone ti ucciderà". Infatti non appena egli si fu allontanato da lui, il leone lo trovò e lo uccise.	36 Then said he unto him, Because thou hast not obeyed the voice of the LORD, behold, as soon as thou art departed from me, a lion shall slay thee. And as soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and slew him.
37 Quegli trovò un altro uomo a cui disse: "Colpiscimi!". Questi lo colpì e lo ferì.	37 Then he found another man, and said, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man smote him, so that in smiting he wounded him.
38 Allora il profeta andò ad aspettare il re sulla strada e si rese irriconoscibile con una benda sugli occhi.	38 So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with ashes upon his face.
39 Mentre passava il re, gli gridò: "Il tuo servo si era gettato nella mischia, quand'ecco un uomo si trasse in disparte e mi condusse un individuo dicendo: "Prendi in custodia quest'uomo! Qualora venisse a mancare, la tua vita pagherà per la sua vita oppure mi pagherai un talento d'argento".	39 And as the king passed by, he cried unto the king: and he said, Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle; and, behold, a man turned aside, and brought a man unto me, and said, Keep this man: if by any means he be missing, then shall thy life be for his life, or else thou shalt pay a talent of silver.
40 Or mentre il tuo servo era occupato qua e là quello scomparve". Il re d'Israele gli disse: "Ecco il tuo verdetto! Tu stesso l'hai pronunciato!".	40 And as thy servant was busy here and there, he was gone. And the king of Israel said unto him, So shall thy judgment be; thyself hast decided it.
41 Egli allora s'affrettò a togliersi la benda dagli occhi e il re d'Israele si accorse ch'egli era uno dei profeti.	41 And he hasted, and took the ashes away from his face; and the king of Israel discerned him that he was of the prophets.
42 Questi gli disse: "Così parla il Signore: "Poiché hai lasciato scappare l'uomo da me votato all'anatèma, la tua vita sarà al posto della sua e il tuo popolo al posto del suo".	42 And he said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Because thou hast let go out of thy hand a man whom I appointed to utter destruction, therefore thy life shall go for his life, and thy people for his people.
43 Il re d'Israele si diresse verso casa, triste e adirato, e giunse a Samaria.	43 And the king of Israel went to his house heavy and displeased, and came to Samaria.
