1 Then the leaders of the families of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, from the stock of the sons of Joseph, approached and spoke to Moses before the leaders of Israel, and they said:	1 Then the heads of families of the clan descended from Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, oneof the clans descended from Joseph, came forward and, addressing Moses and the leaders, the Israelite headsof families,
2 “The Lord has instructed you, our ruler, so that you would divide the land by lot to the sons of Israel, and so that you would give to the daughters of Zelophehad, our brother, the possession owed to their father.	2 they said: 'Yahweh has ordered my lord to apportion the Israelites' heritages in the country by lot andmy lord has been ordered by Yahweh to give the heritage of our brother Zelophehad to his daughters.
3 But if men of another tribe receive them as wives, their possession will follow them, and having been transferred to another tribe, there will be a reduction in our inheritance.	3 Now, if they marry someone from another Israelite tribe, their heritage wil be alienated from ourancestral heritage. The heritage of the tribe to which they wil then belong wil be increased, and the heritage al otted to us will be diminished.
4 And so it may be that, when the Jubilee of remission, that is, the fiftieth year, has arrived, the distribution by lots shall be confounded, and the possession of the one shall be transferred to others.”	4 And when the jubilee for the Israelites comes round, these women's heritage will become part of theheritage of the tribe to which they then belong, and be alienated from the heritage of our ancestral tribe.'
5 Moses answered the sons of Israel, and, at the instruction of the Lord, he said: “The tribe of the sons of Joseph has spoken correctly.	5 At Yahweh's bidding, Moses gave the Israelites this order. He said: 'What the Josephite tribe says istrue.
6 And so, this is the law which has been promulgated by the Lord about the daughters of Zelophehad: Let them marry whomever they may wish, but only among the men of their own tribe,	6 This is Yahweh's ruling for Zelophehad's daughters: "They may marry whom they please, providingthey marry into a clan of their father's tribe.
7 lest the possession of the sons of Israel become commingled, from tribe to tribe. For all men shall take wives from their own tribe and kinship;	7 But the heritages of Israelites are not to be transferred from tribe to tribe; each Israelite wil stick tothe heritage of his own tribe.
8 and all women shall take husbands from their same tribe, so that the inheritance may remain within the families,	8 Any daughter who owns a heritage in an Israelite tribe will marry into a clan of her own paternal tribe,so that the Israelites may each preserve the heritage of his father.
9 and so that the tribes may not be mingled together, but may remain such as they were separated by the Lord.”	9 No heritage may be transferred from one tribe to another; each Israelite tribe wil stick to its ownheritage." '
10 And the daughters of Zelophehad acted according to what was ordered.	10 Zelophehad's daughters did as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
11 And Mahlah, and Tirzah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Noa were wed to the sons of their paternal uncle,	11 Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah and Noah, daughters of Zelophehad, married the sons of theirfather's brothers.
12 from the family of Manasseh, who was a son of Joseph. And the possession which had been distributed to them remained in the tribe and family of their father.	12 Since they married into clans descended from Manasseh son of Joseph, their heritage reverted tothe tribe of their father's clan.
13 These are the commandments and judgments which the Lord ordered by the hand of Moses to the sons of Israel, in the plains of Moab, above the Jordan, opposite Jericho.	13 Such were the commandments and laws that Yahweh prescribed for the Israelites through Moseson the Plains of Moab near the Jordan by Jericho.n
