Proverbs 17

1 A dry morsel with gladness is better than a house full of sacrifices along with conflict.	1 Mejor un mendrugo seco con tranquilidad que una casa llena de banquetes con discordia.
2 A wise servant shall rule over foolish sons, and he will divide the inheritance among brothers.	2 El servidor prudente se impondrá al hijo desvergonzado y compartirá la herencia con los hermanos.
3 Just as silver is tested by fire, and gold is tested in the furnace, so also does the Lord test hearts.	3 Hay un crisol para la plata y un horno para el oro, pero el que prueba los corazones es el Señor.
4 The evil obey an unjust tongue. And the false are submissive to lying lips.	4 El malhechor hace caso a la maledicencia, el mentiroso presta oído a la lengua maligna.
5 Whoever despises the poor rebukes his Maker. And whoever rejoices in the ruin of another will not go unpunished.	5 El que se burla del pobre ultraja a su Creador, el que se alegra de una desgracia no quedará impune.
6 Sons of sons are the crown of old age. And the glory of sons is their fathers.	6 Corona de los ancianos son los nietos, y la gloria de los hijos son sus padres.
7 Well-chosen words are not fitting for the foolish, nor are lying lips fitting for a leader.	7 No le queda bien al necio un lenguaje refinado, ¡cuánto menos a los nobles la mentira!
8 The expectation of those who stand ready is a most pleasing jewel. Whichever way he turns himself, he understands prudently.	8 Un reglo es un talismán para el que lo da: dondequiera que vaya, todo le sale bien.
9 Whoever conceals an offense seeks friendships. Whoever repeats the words of another separates allies.	9 El que disimula una ofensa cultiva la amistad, volver sobre la cosa separa del amigo.
10 A correction benefits more with a wise man, than a hundred stripes with a fool.	10 Hace más una reprensión a un hombre inteligente que cien golpes a un necio.
11 The evil one continually seeks conflicts. But a cruel Angel shall be sent against him.	11 El malvado sólo busca la rebelión, pero le será enviado un mensajero cruel.
12 It is more expedient to meet a bear robbed of her young, than the foolish trusting in his own folly.	12 Más vale toparse con una osa privada de sus crías que con un necio en su locura.
13 Whoever repays evil for good, evil shall not withdraw from his house.	13 Si alguien devuelve mal por bien, la desdicha no se apartará de su casa.
14 Whoever releases the water is the head of the conflict. And just before he suffers contempt, he abandons judgment.	14 Iniciar un altercado es abrir una compuerta: retírate antes que estalle la disputa.
15 Those who justify the impious, and those who condemn the just, both are abominable with God.	15 Absolver al malvado y condenar al justo son dos cosas que abomina el Señor.
16 What does it profit the foolish to have riches, when he is not able to buy wisdom? Whoever makes his house high seeks ruin. And whoever shuns learning shall fall into evils.	16 ¿Para qué sirve el dinero en manos de un necio? ¿Para adquirir sabiduría? ¡Si no tiene inteligencia!
17 Whoever is a friend loves at all times. And a brother is proved by distress.	17 El amigo ama en cualquier ocasión, y un hermano nace para compartir la adversidad.
18 A foolish man will clap his hands, when he makes a pledge for his friend.	18 Es un insensato el que estrecha la mano para salir fiador de su prójimo.
19 Whoever dwells on discord loves disputes. And whoever exalts his door seeks ruin.	19 El que ama las querellas ama el pecado, el que alza demasiado su puerta busca la ruina.
20 Whoever is of a perverse heart shall not find good. And whoever turns his tongue shall fall into evil.	20 El corazón perverso no hallará la felicidad, y la lengua tortuosa caerá en la desgracia.
21 A foolish one is born into his own disgrace. But his father will not rejoice in one who is senseless.	21 El que engendra a un tonto, es para su aflicción, y no hay alegría para el padre de un necio.
22 A joyful soul makes a lifetime flourish. A gloomy spirit dries out the bones.	22 Un corazón alegre es el mejor remedio, pero el espíritu abatido reseca los huesos.
23 The impious receives gifts from the bosom, so that he may pervert the paths of judgment.	23 El malvado acepta regalos bajo cuerda para torcer los senderos de la justicia.
24 Prudence shines from the face of the wise. The eyes of the foolish are on the ends of the earth.	24 Delante del hombre inteligente está la sabiduría, pero el necio mira a cualquier parte.
25 A foolish son is the anger of the father and the grief of the mother who conceived him.	25 Un hijo necio es la tristeza de su padre y la amargura de aquella que lo engendró.
26 It is not good to inflict damage on the just, nor to strike the leader who judges uprightly.	26 Si no está bien multar a un hombre justo, golpear a los nobles supera toda medida.
27 Whoever moderates his words is learned and prudent. And a man of learning has a precious spirit.	27 El que mide sus palabras es un hombre que sabe, y el que mantiene su sangre fría es inteligente.
28 If he would remain silent, even the foolish would be considered wise, and if he closes his lips, intelligent.	28 Hasta el necio, si calla, puede pasar por sabio, y por inteligente, si cierra los labios.
