The Praise of a Canticle, of David. Whoever dwells with the assistance of the Most High will abide in the protection of the God of heaven. | 1 Laus cantici David. Qui habitat in adjutorio Altissimi, in protectione Dei cæli commorabitur. |
He will say to the Lord, “You are my supporter and my refuge.” My God, I will hope in him. | 2 Dicet Domino : Susceptor meus es tu, et refugium meum ; Deus meus, sperabo in eum. |
For he has freed me from the snare of those who go hunting, and from the harsh word. | 3 Quoniam ipse liberavit me de laqueo venantium, et a verbo aspero. |
He will overshadow you with his shoulders, and you will hope under his wings. | 4 Scapulis suis obumbrabit tibi, et sub pennis ejus sperabis. |
His truth will surround you with a shield. You will not be afraid: before the terror of the night, | 5 Scuto circumdabit te veritas ejus : non timebis a timore nocturno ; |
before the arrow flying in the day, before the troubles that wander in the darkness, nor of invasion and the midday demon. | 6 a sagitta volante in die, a negotio perambulante in tenebris, ab incursu, et dæmonio meridiano. |
A thousand will fall before your side and ten thousand before your right hand. Yet it will not draw near you. | 7 Cadent a latere tuo mille, et decem millia a dextris tuis ; ad te autem non appropinquabit. |
So then, truly, you will consider with your eyes, and you will see the retribution of sinners. | 8 Verumtamen oculis tuis considerabis, et retributionem peccatorum videbis. |
For you, O Lord, are my hope. You have set the Most High as your refuge. | 9 Quoniam tu es, Domine, spes mea ; Altissimum posuisti refugium tuum. |
Disaster will not draw near to you, and the scourge will not approach your tabernacle. | 10 Non accedet ad te malum, et flagellum non appropinquabit tabernaculo tuo. |
For he has given his Angels charge over you, so as to preserve you in all your ways. | 11 Quoniam angelis suis mandavit de te, ut custodiant te in omnibus viis tuis. |
With their hands, they will carry you, lest you hurt your foot against a stone. | 12 In manibus portabunt te, ne forte offendas ad lapidem pedem tuum. |
You will walk over the asp and the king serpent, and you will trample the lion and the dragon. | 13 Super aspidem et basiliscum ambulabis, et conculcabis leonem et draconem. |
Because he has hoped in me, I will free him. I will protect him because he has known my name. | 14 Quoniam in me speravit, liberabo eum ; protegam eum, quoniam cognovit nomen meum. |
He will cry out to me, and I will heed him. I am with him in tribulation. I will rescue him, and I will glorify him. | 15 Clamabit ad me, et ego exaudiam eum ; cum ipso sum in tribulatione : eripiam eum, et glorificabo eum. |
I will fill him with length of days. And I will reveal to him my salvation. | 16 Longitudine dierum replebo eum, et ostendam illi salutare meum. |
