CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINLXX
Man, born of woman, living for a short time, is filled with many miseries.1 βροτος γαρ γεννητος γυναικος ολιγοβιος και πληρης οργης
He comes forth like a flower, and is crushed, and he flees, as if a shadow, and never remains in the same state.2 η ωσπερ ανθος ανθησαν εξεπεσεν απεδρα δε ωσπερ σκια και ου μη στη
And do you consider it fitting to look down with your eyes on someone in this way and to lead him into judgment with you?3 ουχι και τουτου λογον εποιησω και τουτον εποιησας εισελθειν εν κριματι ενωπιον σου
Who can make him clean who is conceived of unclean seed? Are you not the only one who can?4 τις γαρ καθαρος εσται απο ρυπου αλλ' ουθεις
The days of man are short, and the number of his months is with you; you have determined his limits, which cannot be surpassed.5 εαν και μια ημερα ο βιος αυτου επι της γης αριθμητοι δε μηνες αυτου παρα σοι εις χρονον εθου και ου μη υπερβη
Withdraw a little from him, so that he may rest, until his awaited day arrives, like that of the hired hand.6 αποστα απ' αυτου ινα ησυχαση και ευδοκηση τον βιον ωσπερ ο μισθωτος
A tree has hope: if it has been cut, it turns green again, and its branches spring forth.7 εστιν γαρ δενδρω ελπις εαν γαρ εκκοπη ετι επανθησει και ο ραδαμνος αυτου ου μη εκλιπη
If its roots grow old in the earth, and its trunk passes into dust,8 εαν γαρ γηραση εν γη η ριζα αυτου εν δε πετρα τελευτηση το στελεχος αυτου
at the scent of water, it will sprout and bring forth leaves, as when it had first been planted.9 απο οσμης υδατος ανθησει ποιησει δε θερισμον ωσπερ νεοφυτον
Truly, when a man dies, and has been left unprotected, and has decayed, I ask you where is he?10 ανηρ δε τελευτησας ωχετο πεσων δε βροτος ουκετι εστιν
It is as if the waters had receded from the sea and an emptied river had dried up;11 χρονω γαρ σπανιζεται θαλασσα ποταμος δε ερημωθεις εξηρανθη
just so, when a man is fallen asleep, he will not rise again, until the heavens are worn away; he will not awaken, nor rise from his sleep.12 ανθρωπος δε κοιμηθεις ου μη αναστη εως αν ο ουρανος ου μη συρραφη και ουκ εξυπνισθησονται εξ υπνου αυτων
Who will grant this to me, that you will protect me in the underworld, and hide me until your fury passes by, and establish a time for me, in which you will remember me?13 ει γαρ οφελον εν αδη με εφυλαξας εκρυψας δε με εως αν παυσηται σου η οργη και ταξη μοι χρονον εν ω μνειαν μου ποιηση
Do you suppose that a dead man will live again? On each of the days in which I now battle, I wait until my transformation occurs.14 εαν γαρ αποθανη ανθρωπος ζησεται συντελεσας ημερας του βιου αυτου υπομενω εως αν παλιν γενωμαι
You will call me and I will answer you; to the work of your hands, you will extend your right hand.15 ειτα καλεσεις εγω δε σοι υπακουσομαι τα δε εργα των χειρων σου μη αποποιου
Indeed, you have numbered my steps, but you have been lenient with my sins.16 ηριθμησας δε μου τα επιτηδευματα και ου μη παρελθη σε ουδεν των αμαρτιων μου
You have sealed up my offenses, as if in a purse, but you have cured my iniquity.17 εσφραγισας δε μου τας ανομιας εν βαλλαντιω επεσημηνω δε ει τι ακων παρεβην
A falling mountain flows away, and a stone is transferred from its place.18 και πλην ορος πιπτον διαπεσειται και πετρα παλαιωθησεται εκ του τοπου αυτης
Waters wear away stones, and with a flood the land is reduced little by little; and similarly, you will destroy man.19 λιθους ελεαναν υδατα και κατεκλυσεν υδατα υπτια του χωματος της γης και υπομονην ανθρωπου απωλεσας
You have strengthened him for a little while, so that he may cross over into eternity. You will change his face and send him forth.20 ωσας αυτον εις τελος και ωχετο επεστησας αυτω το προσωπον και εξαπεστειλας
Whether his sons have been noble or ignoble, he will not understand.21 πολλων δε γενομενων των υιων αυτου ουκ οιδεν εαν δε ολιγοι γενωνται ουκ επισταται
And in this way his body, while he yet lives, will have grief, and his soul will mourn over himself.22 αλλ' η αι σαρκες αυτου ηλγησαν η δε ψυχη αυτου επενθησεν
