1 Man, born of woman, living for a short time, is filled with many miseries.	1 L'uomo, nato di donna, breve di giorni e sazio di inquietudine,
2 He comes forth like a flower, and is crushed, and he flees, as if a shadow, and never remains in the same state.	2 come un fiore spunta e avvizzisce, fugge come l'ombra e mai si ferma.
3 And do you consider it fitting to look down with your eyes on someone in this way and to lead him into judgment with you?	3 Tu, sopra un tal essere tieni aperti i tuoi occhi e lo chiami a giudizio presso di te?
4 Who can make him clean who is conceived of unclean seed? Are you not the only one who can?	4 Chi può trarre il puro dall'immondo? Nessuno.
5 The days of man are short, and the number of his months is with you; you have determined his limits, which cannot be surpassed.	5 Se i suoi giorni sono contati, se il numero dei suoi mesi dipende da te, se hai fissato un termine che non può oltrepassare,
6 Withdraw a little from him, so that he may rest, until his awaited day arrives, like that of the hired hand.	6 distogli lo sguardo da lui e lascialo stare finché abbia compiuto, come un salariato, la sua giornata!
7 A tree has hope: if it has been cut, it turns green again, and its branches spring forth.	7 Poiché anche per l'albero c'è speranza: se viene tagliato, ancora ributta e i suoi germogli non cessano di crescere;
8 If its roots grow old in the earth, and its trunk passes into dust,	8 se sotto terra invecchia la sua radice e al suolo muore il suo tronco,
9 at the scent of water, it will sprout and bring forth leaves, as when it had first been planted.	9 al sentore dell'acqua rigermoglia e mette rami come nuova pianta.
10 Truly, when a man dies, and has been left unprotected, and has decayed, I ask you where is he?	10 L'uomo invece, se muore, giace inerte, quando il mortale spira, dov'è?
11 It is as if the waters had receded from the sea and an emptied river had dried up;	11 Potranno sparire le acque del mare e i fiumi prosciugarsi e disseccarsi,
12 just so, when a man is fallen asleep, he will not rise again, until the heavens are worn away; he will not awaken, nor rise from his sleep.	12 ma l'uomo che giace più non s'alzerà, finché durano i cieli non si sveglierà, né più si desterà dal suo sonno.
13 Who will grant this to me, that you will protect me in the underworld, and hide me until your fury passes by, and establish a time for me, in which you will remember me?	13 Oh, se tu volessi nascondermi nella tomba, occultarmi, finché sarà passata la tua ira, fissarmi un termine e poi ricordarti di me!
14 Do you suppose that a dead man will live again? On each of the days in which I now battle, I wait until my transformation occurs.	14 Se l'uomo che muore potesse rivivere, aspetterei tutti i giorni della mia milizia finché arrivi per me l'ora del cambio!
15 You will call me and I will answer you; to the work of your hands, you will extend your right hand.	15 Mi chiameresti e io risponderei, l'opera delle tue mani tu brameresti.
16 Indeed, you have numbered my steps, but you have been lenient with my sins.	16 Mentre ora tu conti i miei passi non spieresti più il mio peccato:
17 You have sealed up my offenses, as if in a purse, but you have cured my iniquity.	17 in un sacchetto, chiuso, sarebbe il mio misfatto e tu cancelleresti la mia colpa.
18 A falling mountain flows away, and a stone is transferred from its place.	18 Ohimè! come un monte finisce in una frana e come una rupe si stacca dal suo posto,
19 Waters wear away stones, and with a flood the land is reduced little by little; and similarly, you will destroy man.	19 e le acque consumano le pietre, le alluvioni portano via il terreno: così tu annienti la speranza dell'uomo.
20 You have strengthened him for a little while, so that he may cross over into eternity. You will change his face and send him forth.	20 Tu lo abbatti per sempre ed egli se ne va, tu sfiguri il suo volto e lo scacci.
21 Whether his sons have been noble or ignoble, he will not understand.	21 Siano pure onorati i suoi figli, non lo sa; siano disprezzati, lo ignora!
22 And in this way his body, while he yet lives, will have grief, and his soul will mourn over himself.	22 Soltanto i suoi dolori egli sente e piange sopra di sé.
