1 Samuel 13

1 Saul was . . . years old when he became king, and reigned over Israel for . . . years.	1 E figliuolo d'uno anno era a Saul, quando incominciò a regnare; e due anni regnò sopra Israel.
2 Saul selected three thousand men of Israel; two thousand of them were with Saul at Michmash and inthe highlands of Bethel, and one thousand with Jonathan at Geba of Benjamin; the rest of the people Saul senthome, everyone to his tent.	2 E Saul elesse a sè tre milia uomini d' Israel; ed erano con Saul due milia in Macmas e (ascosti in agguato) nel monte di Betel; e mille n'erano con Ionata in Gabaa di Beniamin; e dell' altro popopolo ciascuno mandò alle case loro.
3 Jonathan kil ed the Philistine governor stationed at Gibeah and the Philistines were informed that theHebrews had risen in revolt. Saul had the trumpet sounded throughout the country,	3 E Ionata percosse la stazione de' Filistei, li quali erano in Gabaa. La quale cosa udirono i Filistei; e Saul suonò la tromba in tutta la terra, dicendo: intendano gli Ebrei.
4 and al Israel heard the news, 'Saul has kil ed the Philistine governor, and now Israel has antagonisedthe Philistines.' So all the people ral ied behind Saul at Gilgal.	4 E tutto il popolo intese questa fama: Saul percosse gli Filistei; e Israel si levò ritto contro ai Filistei. Onde il popolo chiamò in Galgala dopo Saul.
5 The Philistines mustered to make war on Israel, three thousand chariots, six thousand horse and aforce as numerous as the sand on the seashore. They came up and pitched camp at Michmash, to the east ofBeth-Aven.	5 Gli Filistei si congregarono per combattere contro ad Israel XXX milia carra e VI milia cavalieri, e l'altro popolo molto, sì come l'arena la quale è nel lido del mare. E ascendendo puosero campo in Macmas verso oriente in Betaven.
6 When the Israelites saw that their plight was desperate, being so hard pressed, the people hid incaves, in holes, in crevices, in vaults, in wel s.	6 La quale cosa veggendo i figliuoli d' Israel, li quali erano stretti, ed era afflitto il popolo, nascosersi per le grotte e per le spelonche, e tra le pietre e tra le cisterne.
7 Some also crossed the Jordan fords into the territory of Gad and Gilead. Saul was still at Gilgal and althe people who followed him were trembling.	7 E gli Ebrei passarono il Giordano [in] la terra di Gad e di Galaad. Ed essendo ancora Saul in Galgala, tutto il popolo che il seguitava fue isbigottito.
8 He waited for seven days, the period fixed by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and thearmy, deserting Saul, began dispersing.	8 E aspettò VII die, come era piaciuto a Samuel, e non venne Samuel in Galgala; e partissi il popolo da lui.
9 Saul then said, 'Bring me the burnt offering and the communion sacrifices.' And he presented the burntoffering.	9 E disse Saul: recatemi lo olocausto e il pacifico sacrificio. E offerse l'olocausto.
10 Just as he had finished presenting the burnt offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to meet andgreet him.	10 E compiuto d' offerire l'olocausto, Samuel che venia (per offerire); e Saul gli volse incontro per salutarlo.
11 Samuel said, 'What have you been doing?' Saul replied, 'I saw the army deserting me anddispersing, and you had not come at the time fixed, while the Philistines were mustering at Michmash.	11 E Samuel gli disse: che hai tu fatto? E Saul gli respuose: però ch' io vedea che il popolo si partìa da me, e tu non venivi com' era ordinato, e gli Filistei erano raunati in Macmas,
12 So I thought: Now the Philistines are going to fall on me at Gilgal and I have not implored the favourof Yahweh. So I felt obliged to make the burnt offering myself.'	12 io dissi ora verranno gli Filistei a me in Galgala, e non umiliai la faccia di Dio. Onde, costretto per necessità, io hoe offerto il sacrificio.
13 Samuel said to Saul, 'You have acted like a fool. You have not obeyed the order which Yahweh yourGod gave you. Otherwise, Yahweh would have confirmed your sovereignty over Israel for ever.	13 E Samuel disse a Saul: stoltamente hai fatto, e non hai osservati gli comandamenti del tuo Iddio, li quali egli ti comandò. La quale cosa se tu non avessi fatta, già avea il Signore apparecchiato il tuo regno sopra Israel in sempiterno.
14 But now your sovereignty wil not last; Yahweh has discovered a man after his own heart anddesignated him as leader of his people, since you have not carried out what Yahweh ordered you.'	14 Ma il tuo regno non anderà più innanzi. Il Signore hae cercato uomo secondo il suo cuore, e hagli comandato che sia duca sopra il popolo suo, poichè tu non hai osservato quello che il Signore comando.
15 Samuel then got up and left Gilgal to continue his journey. Those people remaining followed Saul ashe went to join the warriors, and went from Gilgal to Geba of Benjamin. Saul reviewed the force that was withhim; there were about six hundred men.	15 E levossi Samuel, e ascendè di Galgala in Gabaa di Beniamin. E l' altro popolo andò dopo Saul incontro al popolo che combatteano contro a loro, vegnendo di Galgala in Gabaa, nelli colli di Beniamin. Numerò Saul il popolo, il quale sì ritrovò con esso lui, quasi secento uomini.
16 Saul, his son Jonathan, and the force that was with them took up their quarters in Geba of Benjaminwhile the Philistines camped at Michmash.	16 E Saul, e Ionata suo figliuolo, e il popolo che si ritrovò con lui, era in Gabaa di Beniamin; i Filistei sedevano in Macmas.
17 The raiding company sallied out of the Philistine camp in three groups: one group made for Ophrahin the territory of Shual;	17 E del campo de' Filistei uscirono tre compagnie a rubare. L'una compagnia andò per la via di Efra alla terra di Sual.
18 one group made for Beth-Horon; and one group made for the high ground overlooking the Valley ofthe Hyenas, in the direction of the desert.	18 E l'altra andava per la via di Betoron: la terza s'era volta alla via del termine (nella terra di Sabaa) dell' alta valle di Seboim verso il deserto.
19 There was not a single blacksmith throughout the territory of Israel, the Philistines' reasoning being,'We do not want the Hebrews making swords or spears.'	19 E in tutta la terra d' Israel non si trovava fabro di ferro; però che i Filistei sì guardavano che gli Ebrei non potessero comprare nè lancia nè coltello.
20 Hence, the Israelites were al in the habit of going down individually to the Philistines to sharpen theirploughshares, axes, mattocks and scythes.	20 E tutto Israel discendea a' Filistei per conciare ciascuno il suo gomiero e la sua vanga, e la manara e 'l sarchiello,
21 The price was two-thirds of a shekel for ploughshares and axes, and one-third for sharpeningmattocks and straightening goads.	21 e le punte de' gomieri e delle vanghe e de' tridenti e delle securi, che erano rintuzzate e anco a conciare il pungiglione.
22 So it was that on the day of the battle, no one in the army with Saul and Jonathan was equipped witheither sword or spear; only Saul and his son Jonathan were so equipped.	22 E venuti gli dì della battaglia, non si trovò lancia nè spada a tutto il popolo, eccetto Saul e Ionata suo figliuolo.
23 A Philistine unit set out for the Pass of Michmash.	23 E partissi il campo de' Filistei per passare in Macmas.
