1 The men of Ephraim mobilised; they crossed the Jordan near Zaphon and said to Jephthah, 'Why didyou go and make war on the Ammonites without asking us to go with you? We shal burn down your house overyour head!'	1 Зібралися мужі ефраїмські й двигнулися на Цафон та й промовили до Єфти: «Чому це ти ходив на війну проти синів Аммона та й не покликав нас із собою? Ми спалимо твою хату разом з тобою!»
2 Jephthah replied, 'My people and I were in serious conflict with the Ammonites. I summoned you, butyou did not come to rescue me from them.	2 І відказав їм Єфта: «Я і мій народ тяжко ворогували; сини ж Аммона гнітили його тяжко. Він кликав вас, та ви не хотіли його рятувати з їхніх рук.
3 When I saw that no one was coming to rescue me, I took my life in my hands and marched against theAmmonites, and Yahweh handed them over to me. So why advance on me today to make war on me?'	3 Бачивши ж, що ви не йдете на підмогу, я одважив душу мою й рушив на синів Аммона, й Господь видав їх мені в руки. Чого ж оце наступаєте ви сьогодні на мене війною?»
4 Jephthah then mustered al the men of Gilead and made war on Ephraim, and the men of Gileaddefeated Ephraim -- since the latter used to say, 'You are only fugitives from Ephraim, you Gileadites in the heartof Ephraim and Manasseh.'	4 І зібрав Єфта усіх синів гілеадських та й вдарив на ефраїміїв; і побили мужі гілеадські ефраїміїв тому, що ті казали: «Ви ефраїмські втікачі, бо Гілеад лежить посеред Ефраїма та посеред Манассії.»
5 Gilead then cut Ephraim off from the fords of the Jordan, and whenever Ephraimite fugitives said, 'Letme cross,' the men of Gilead would ask, 'Are you an Ephraimite?' If he said, 'No,'	5 Тоді гілеадії позаймали йорданські броди до Ефраїму; і як хто з ефраїмських втікачів говорив: «Дайте мені перебрести», то гілеадії його й питали: «Чи ти не ефраїмій?» І як той казав «Ні!» —
6 they then said, 'Very well, say Shibboleth.' If anyone said, "Sibboleth", because he could notpronounce it, then they would seize him and kil him by the fords of the Jordan. Forty-two thousand Ephraimitesfel on this occasion.	6 то вони казали йому: Скажи но: «Шібболет», і як він казав «Сібболет», бо не вмів доладу вимовити, то вони хапали його та й стинали на йорданських бродах. Так полягло тоді сорок дві тисячі ефраїмів.
7 Jephthah judged Israel for six years. Jephthah the Gileadite then died and was buried in his town, inGilead.	7 Правив Єфта Ізраїлем шість років. Коли ж Єфта, гілеадій, помер, поховано його в одному з міст у Гі леаді.
8 After him, Ibzan of Bethlehem was judge in Israel.	8 Після нього суддював над Ізраїлем Івцан з Вифлеєму.
9 He had thirty sons and thirty daughters. He gave his daughters in marriage outside his clan andbrought in thirty brides from outside for his sons. He was judge in Israel for seven years.	9 Було в нього тридцять синів, а тридцять дочок він видав на чужу сторону, а синам своїм привів тридцять дочок із чужої сторони. Правив він Ізраїлем сім років.
10 Ibzan then died and was buried in Bethlehem.	10 Коли ж Івцан помер, поховано його в Вифлеємі.
11 After him, Elon of Zebulun was judge in Israel. He was judge in Israel for ten years.	11 Після нього правив Ізраїлем Елон, завулоній. Правив він ним десять років.
12 Elon of Zebulun then died and was buried at Aijalon in the territory of Zebulun.	12 Коли ж Елон, за вулоній, помер, поховано його в Аялоні, в землі Завулонській.
13 After him, Abdon son of Hil el of Pirathon was judge in Israel.	13 А після нього правив Ізраїлем Авдон, син Гіллела, піратоній.
14 He had forty sons and thirty grandsons who rode seventy young donkeys. He was judge in Israel foreight years.	14 Було в нього сорок синів і тридцять онуків, що їздили на сімдесятьох ослах. Він правив Ізраїлем вісім років.
15 Abdon son of Hil el of Pirathon then died and was buried at Pirathon in the territory of Ephraim, in theAmalekite highlands.	15 Коли помер Авдон, син Гіллела, з Піратону, поховано його в Піратоні, в Ефраїм-землі, на горі амалекитській.
