Acts of the Apostles 22

NEW JERUSALEM	Біблія
1 'My brothers, my fathers, listen to what I have to say to you in my defence.'	1 «Мужі брати й батьки! Послухайте тепер мою оборону перед вами.»
2 When they realised he was speaking in Hebrew, the silence was even greater than before.	2 Почувши, що він до них говорить єврейською мовою, вони ще більше притихли.
3 'I am a Jew', Paul said, 'and was born at Tarsus in Cilicia. I was brought up here in this city. It wasunder Gamaliel that I studied and was taught the exact observance of the Law of our ancestors. In fact, I was asful of duty towards God as you al are today.	3 І він промовив: «Я — юдей, родом з Тарсу в Кілікії, але вихований у цім місті при ногах Гамалиїла, навчений докладно батьківського закону та ревнитель Бога, як і ви всі сьогодні.
4 I even persecuted this Way to the death and sent women as wel as men to prison in chains	4 Я переслідував путь цю аж до смерти, кидаючи в кайдани та запроторюючи в тюрми чоловіків і жінок;
5 as the high priest and the whole council of elders can testify. I even received letters from them to thebrothers in Damascus, which I took with me when I set off to bring prisoners back from there to Jerusalem forpunishment.	5 як і первосвященик може мені бути свідком і вся старшина; я навіть брав від них листи до братів у Дамаску й ішов туди, щоб привести і тих, які там були, зв’язаними в Єрусалим, щоб їх покарати.
6 'It happened that I was on that journey and nearly at Damascus when in the middle of the day a brightlight from heaven suddenly shone round me.	6 І сталося, як я був у дорозі й наближався до Дамаску, десь опівдні, зненацька велике світло з неба засяяло навкруг мене;
7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?"	7 я повалився на землю і почув голос, що казав до мене: Савле, Савле! Чого ти мене переслідуєш?
8 I answered, "Who are you, Lord?" and he said to me, "I am Jesus the Nazarene, whom you arepersecuting."	8 А я озвався: Хто ти, Господи? Він же сказав до мене: Я — Ісус Назарянин, що його ти переслідуєш.
9 The people with me saw the light but did not hear the voice which spoke to me.	9 Ті ж, що були зо мною, бачили світло, та не розуміли того, що говорив до мене.
10 I said, "What am I to do, Lord?" The Lord answered, "Get up and go into Damascus, and there youwil be told what you have been appointed to do."	10 Я спитав: Що мені, Господи, робити? Господь сказав до мене: Встань, іди в Дамаск; там тобі скажуть усе, що тобі постановлено робити.
11 Since the light had been so dazzling that I was blind, I got to Damascus only because my companionsled me by the hand.	11 Коли ж я від сяйва того світла не бачив, ті, що були зо мною, повели мене за руку, і я прибув до Дамаску.
12 'Someone called Ananias, a devout fol ower of the Law and highly thought of by al the Jews livingthere,	12 А був там якийсь Ананія, чоловік побожний за законом, доброї слави в усіх місцевих юдеїв.
13 came to see me; he stood beside me and said, "Brother Saul, receive your sight." Instantly my sightcame back and I was able to see him.	13 Він прийшов до мене і, приступивши близько, сказав мені: Савле брате, прозри! І я тієї хвилини глянув на нього.
14 Then he said, "The God of our ancestors has chosen you to know his will, to see the Upright One andhear his own voice speaking,	14 А він мовив: Бог батьків наших тебе наперед призначив спізнати його волю, бачити Праведника й чути з його уст голос;
15 because you are to be his witness before all humanity, testifying to what you have seen and heard.	15 бо будеш перед усіма людьми йому свідком того, що ти чув і бачив.
16 And now why delay? Hurry and be baptised and wash away your sins, cal ing on his name."	16 Чому ж іще зволікаєш? Встань, охристися та обмий твої гріхи, призвавши його ім’я.
17 'It happened that, when I got back to Jerusalem, and was praying in the Temple, I fell into a trance	17 І сталося зо мною, як я повернувсь у Єрусалим і молився у храмі: я потрапив у захоплення.
18 and then I saw him. "Hurry," he said, "leave Jerusalem at once; they wil not accept the testimony you are giving about me."	18 І я побачив його, який до мене мовив: Спішись, вийди швидко з Єрусалиму, бо вони не приймуть твого свідоцтва про мене.
19 "Lord," I answered, "they know that I used to go from synagogue to synagogue, imprisoning andflogging those who believed in you;	19 А я сказав: Господи, та вони добре знають, що я кидав у в’язниці та бив по синагогах тих, що вірують у тебе.
20 and that when the blood of your witness Stephen was being shed, I, too, was standing by, in fullagreement with his murderers, and in charge of their clothes."	20 А коли лилась кров Стефана, твого свідка, то і я сам стояв при тому й похваляв тих, що його вбивали, і стеріг їхню одежу.
21 Then he said to me, "Go! I am sending you out to the gentiles far away." '	21 Та він до мене мовив: Іди, бо я пошлю тебе до поган далеко.»
22 So far they had listened to him, but at these words they began to shout, 'Rid the earth of the man! Heis not fit to live!'	22 І слухали вони його аж до цього слова, а потім зняли свій голос, кажучи: «Геть із землі такого! Йому не жити!»
23 They were yel ing, waving their cloaks and throwing dust into the air,	23 І як вони кричали та одежею жбурляли й кидали в повітря порох,
24 and so the tribune had him brought into the fortress and ordered him to be examined under the lash,to find out the reason for the outcry against him.	24 тисяцький звелів увести його в твердиню і наказав бичами його допитати, щоб дізнатись, чого вони на нього так кричали.
25 But when they had strapped him down Paul said to the centurion on duty, 'Is it legal for you to flog aman who is a Roman citizen and has not been brought to trial?'	25 А як вони його простягнули лід ременями, Павло сказав до сотника, що стояв: «Чи дозволено вам бичувати римського громадянина, та ще й без суду?»
26 When he heard this the centurion went and told the tribune; 'Do you realise what you are doing?' hesaid. 'This man is a Roman citizen.'	26 Почувши це сотник, пішов до тисяцького й доніс, кажучи: «(Вважай), що наміряєшся робити, бо цей чоловік — римський громадянин.»
27 So the tribune came and asked him, 'Tel me, are you a Roman citizen?' Paul answered 'Yes'.	27 І прийшов до Павла тисяцький та й питає: «Скажи мені, чи ти римлянин?» А він: «Так!»
28 To this the tribune replied, 'It cost me a large sum to acquire this citizenship.' 'But I was born to it,'said Paul.	28 Тоді тисяцький сказав: «Я за великі гроші здобув це громадянство.» А Павло мовив: «А я в ньому народився.»
29 Then those who were about to examine him hurriedly withdrew, and the tribune himself was alarmedwhen he realised that he had put a Roman citizen in chains.	29 І зараз відступили від нього ті, що хотіли робити над ним допит; та й тисяцький злякався, довідавшися, що то був римський громадянин і що він його зв’язав.
30 The next day, since he wanted to know for sure what charge the Jews were bringing, he freed Pauland gave orders for a meeting of the chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin; then he brought Paul down and sethim in front of them.	30 Наступного дня, бажаючи довідатися достеменно, в чому юдеї його винуватять, він зняв з нього кайдани і звелів зібратися первосвященикам і всій раді, і привівши Павла, поставив його перед ними.
