NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
as fire sets brushwood alight, as fire makes water boil -- to make your name known to your foes; thenations would tremble at your presence,1 That thou wouldst rend the heavens, and wouldst come down: the mountains would melt away at thy presence.
at the unexpected miracles you would do. (Oh, that you would come down, in your presence themountains would quake!)2 They would melt as at the burning of fire, the waters would burn with fire, that thy name might be made known to thy enemies: that the nations might tremble at thy presence.
Never has anyone heard, no ear has heard, no eye has seen any god but you act like this for the sakeof those who trust him.3 When thou shalt do wonderful things, we shall not bear them: thou didst come down, and at thy presence the mountains melted away.
You come to meet those who are happy to act uprightly; keeping your ways reminds them of you. Yes,you have been angry and we have been sinners; now we persist in your ways and we shal be saved.4 From the beginning of the world they have not heard, nor perceived with the ears: the eye hath not seen, O God, besides thee, what things thou hast prepared for them that wait for thee.
We have al been like unclean things and our upright deeds like filthy rags. We wither, al of us, likeleaves, and al our misdeeds carry us off like the wind.5 Thou hast met him that rejoiceth, and doth justice: in thy ways they shall remember thee: behold thou art angry, and we have sinned: in them we have been always, and we shall be saved.
There is no one to invoke your name, to rouse himself to hold fast to you, for you have hidden your facefrom us and given us up to the power of our misdeeds.6 And we are all become as one unclean, and all our justices as the rag of a menstruous woman: and we have all fallen as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
And yet, Yahweh, you are our Father; we the clay and you our potter, al of us are the work of yourhands.7 There is none that calleth upon thy name: that riseth up, and taketh hold of thee: thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast crushed us in the hand of our iniquity.
Yahweh, do not let your anger go too far and do not remember guilt for ever. Look, please, we are alyour people;8 And now, O Lord, thou art our father, and we are clay: and thou art our maker, and we all are the works of thy hands.
your holy cities have become a desert, Zion has become a desert, Jerusalem a wasteland.9 Be not very angry, O Lord, and remember no longer our iniquity: behold, see we are all thy people.
Our holy and glorious Temple, in which our ancestors used to praise you, has been burnt to theground; al our delight lies in ruins.10 The city of thy sanctuary is become a desert, Sion is made a desert, Jerusalem is desolate.
Yahweh, can you restrain yourself at al this? Wil you stay silent and afflict us beyond endurance?11 The house of our holiness, and of our glory, where our fathers praised thee, is burnt with fire, and all our lovely things are turned into ruins.
Wilt thou refrain thyself, O Lord, upon these things, wilt thou hold thy peace, and afflict us vehemently?
