Sirach 38

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Treat the doctor with the honour that is his due, in consideration of his services; for he too has beencreated by the Lord.	1 Honra al médico por sus servicios, como corresponde, porque también a él lo ha creado el Señor.
2 Healing itself comes from the Most High, like a gift received from a king.	2 La curación procede del Altísimo, y el médico recibe presentes del rey.
3 The doctor's learning keeps his head high, and the great regard him with awe.	3 La ciencia del médico afianza su prestigio y él se gana la admiración de los grandes.
4 The Lord has brought forth medicinal herbs from the ground, and no one sensible wil despise them.	4 El Señor hizo brotar las plantas medicinales, y el hombre prudente no las desprecia.
5 Did not a piece of wood once sweeten the water, thus giving proof of its power?	5 ¿Acaso una rama no endulzó el agua, a fin de que se conocieran sus propiedades?
6 He has also given some people knowledge, so that they may draw credit from his mighty works.	6 El Señor dio a los hombres la ciencia, para ser glorificado por sus maravillas.
7 He uses these for healing and relieving pain; the druggist makes up a mixture from them.	7 Con esos remedios el médico cura y quita el dolor, y el farmacéutico prepara sus ungüentos.
8 Thus, there is no end to his activities; thanks to him, well-being exists throughout the world.	8 Así, las obras del Señor no tienen fin, y de él viene la salud a la superficie de la tierra.
9 My child, when you are il , do not rebel, but pray to the Lord and he wil heal you.	9 Si estás enfermo, hijo mío, no seas negligentes, ruega al Señor, y él te sanará.
10 Renounce your faults, keep your hands unsoiled, and cleanse your heart from al sin.	10 No incurras en falta, enmienda tu conducta y purifica tu corazón de todo pecado.
11 Offer incense and a memorial of fine flour, make as rich an offering as you can afford.	11 Ofrece el suave aroma y el memorial de harina, presenta una rica ofrenda, como si fuera la última.
12 Then let the doctor take over -- the Lord created him too -- do not let him leave you, for you need him.	12 Después, deja actuar al médico, porque el Señor lo creó; que no se aparte de ti, porque lo necesitas.
13 There are times when good health depends on doctors.	13 En algunos casos, tu mejoría está en sus manos,
14 For they, in their turn, wil pray the Lord to grant them the grace to relieve and to heal, and so prolongyour life.	14 y ellos mismos rogarán al Señor que les permita dar un alivio y curar al enfermo, para que se restablezca.
15 Whoever sins in the eyes of his Maker, let such a one come under the care of the doctor!	15 El hombre que peca delante de su Creador, ¡que caiga en manos del médico!
16 My child, shed tears over the dead, lament for the dead to show your sorrow, then bury the body withdue ceremony and do not fail to honour the grave.	16 Hijo mío, por un muerto, derrama lágrimas, y entona un lamento, como quien sufre terriblemente. Entierra su cadáver en la forma establecida y no descuides su sepultura.
17 Weep bitterly, beat your breast, observe the mourning the dead deserves for a day or two, to avoidcensorious comment, and then be comforted in your sorrow;	17 Llora amargamente, golpéate el pecho, y observa el duelo que él se merece, uno o dos días, para evitar comentarios, y luego consuélate de tu tristeza.
18 for grief can lead to death, a grief-stricken heart loses al energy.	18 Porque la tristeza lleva a la muerte y un corazón abatido quita las fuerzas.
19 In affliction sorrow persists, a life of grief is hard to bear.	19 En la desgracia la tristeza es permanente, y el corazón maldice una vida miserable.
20 Do not abandon your heart to grief, drive it away, bear your own end in mind.	20 No te dejes llevar por la tristeza, aléjala, acordándote de tu fin.
21 Do not forget, there is no coming back; you cannot help the dead, and you will harm yourself.	21 Nunca lo olvides: ¡no hay camino de retorno! Al muerto, no podrás serle útil y te harás mal a ti.
22 'Remember my doom, since it will be yours too; I yesterday, you today!'	22 «Recuerda mi destino, que será también el tuyo: ayer a mí y hoy a ti».
23 Once the dead are laid to rest, let their memory rest, do not fret for them, once their spirit departs.	23 Ya que el muerto descansa, deja en paz su memoria, y trata de consolarte, porque ha partido su espíritu.
24 Leisure gives the scribe the chance to acquire wisdom; a man with few commitments can grow wise.	24 La sabiduría del escriba exige tiempo y dedicación, y el que no está absorbido por otras tareas, se hará sabio.
25 How can the ploughman become wise, whose sole ambition is to wield the goad, driving his oxen,engrossed in their work, his conversation limited to bul ocks,	25 ¿Cómo se hará sabio el que maneja el arado y se enorgullece de empuñar la picana, el que guía los bueyes, trabaja con ellos, y no sabe hablar más que de novillos?
26 his thoughts absorbed in the furrows he traces and his long evenings spent in fattening heifers?	26 El pone todo su empeño en abrir los surcos y se desvela por dar forraje a las terneras.
27 Similarly with al workmen and craftsmen, toiling day and night; those who engrave seals, for evertrying to think of a new design, concentrating on catching a good likeness and staying up late to get the workdone.	27 Lo mismo pasa con el artesano y el constructor, que trabajan día y noche; con los que graban las efigies de los sellos y modifican pacientemente los diseños: ellos se dedican a reproducir el modelo y trabajan hasta tarde para acabar la obra.
28 Similarly with the blacksmith sitting by his anvil; he considers what to do with the pig-iron, the breath ofthe fire scorches his skin, as he contends with the heat of the furnace; the noise of the hammer deafens him, hiseyes are fixed on the pattern; he concentrates on getting the job done wel and stays up late to apply thefinishing touches.	28 Lo mismo pasa con el herrero, sentado junto al yunque, con la atención fija en el hierro que forja: el vaho del fuego derrite su carne y él se debate con el calor de la fragua; el ruido del martillo ensordece sus oídos y sus ojos están fijos en el modelo del objeto; pone todo su empeño en acabar sus obras y se desvela por dejarlas bien terminadas.
29 Similarly with the potter, sitting at his work, turning the wheel with his feet; constantly on the alert overhis work, each flick of the finger premeditated;	29 Lo mismo pasa con el alfarero, sentado junto a su obra, mientras hace girar el torno con sus pies: está concentrado exclusivamente en su tarea y apremiado por completar la cantidad;
30 he pummels the clay with his arm, and with his feet he kneads it; he concentrates on applying theglaze right and stays up late to clean the kiln.	30 con su brazo modela la arcilla y con los pies vence su resistencia; pone todo su empeño en acabar el barnizado y se desvela por limpiar el horno.
31 Al these people rely on their hands and each is skilled at his own craft.	31 Todos ellos confían en sus manos, y cada uno se muestra sabio en su oficio.
32 A town could not be inhabited without them, there would be no settling, no travel ing.	32 Sin ellos no se levantaría ninguna ciudad, nadie la habitaría ni circularía por ella.
33 But you wil not find them in the parliament, they do not hold high rank in the assembly. They do not siton the judicial bench, and they do not meditate on the Law.	33 Pero no se los buscará para el consejo del pueblo ni tendrán preeminencia en la asamblea; no se sentarán en el tribunal del juez ni estarán versados en los decretos de la Alianza.
34 They are not remarkable for their culture or judgement, nor are they found frequenting thephilosophers. They sustain the structure of the world, and their prayer is concerned with their trade.	34 No harán brillar la instrucción ni el derecho, ni se los encontrará entre los autores de proverbios. Sin embargo, ellos afianzan la creación eterna y el objeto de su plegaria son los trabajos de su oficio.
