1 For your holy ones, however, there was a very great light. The Egyptians, who could hear them but notsee them, cal ed them fortunate because they had not suffered too;	1 Pour tes saints, au contraire, la lumière resplendissait. Les Égyptiens ne les voyaient pas, mais ils les entendaient et pensaient qu’ils avaient bien de la chance d’y échapper.
2 they thanked them for doing no injury in return for previous wrongs and asked forgiveness for theirpast il -wil .	2 Ils les remerciaient même de ne pas se venger après tout ce qu’ils avaient subi, et ils leur en demandaient pardon.
3 In contrast to the darkness, you gave your people a pil ar of blazing fire to guide them on theirunknown journey, a mild sun for their ambitious migration.	3 À la place de cette obscurité, tu donnas à ton peuple une colonne de feu pour les guider dans ce voyage à l’aventure: leur glorieuse migration se ferait ainsi sous un soleil qui ne les brûlait pas.
4 But well those others deserved to be deprived of light and imprisoned in darkness, for they had kept incaptivity your children, by whom the incorruptible light of the Law was to be given to the world.	4 Les Égyptiens méritaient cette privation de lumière, ces ténèbres qui les emprisonnaient: n’avaient-ils pas eux-mêmes retenu captifs tes fils qui devaient porter au monde l’impérissable lumière de ta Loi?
5 As they had resolved to kill the infants of the holy ones, and as of those exposed only one child hadbeen saved, you punished them by carrying off their horde of children and by destroying them al in the wildwater.	5 Ils avaient voulu exterminer les nouveau-nés du peuple saint. Seul parmi ceux qu’on abandonnait, Moïse fut sauvé. Pour les punir, Seigneur, tu as fait périr un grand nombre des leurs, puis tu les as noyés, tous ensemble, dans la mer impétueuse.
6 That night had been known in advance to our ancestors, so that, wel knowing him in whom they hadput their trust, they would be sure of his promises.	6 Cette nuit avait été prédite à nos pères, pour qu’ils sachent ensuite la valeur de tes promesses et qu’ils y puisent leur confiance.
7 Your people thus were waiting both for the rescue of the upright and for the ruin of the enemy;	7 Oui, ton peuple attendait ce moment où les justes seraient sauvés et leurs ennemis ruinés;
8 for by the very vengeance that you exacted on our adversaries, you glorified us by calling us to you.	8 en punissant nos adversaires, tu couvrais de gloire tes élus, c’est-à-dire nous-mêmes.
9 So the holy children of the good offered sacrifice in secret and with one accord enacted this holy law:that the holy ones should share good things and dangers alike; and forthwith they chanted the hymns of theancestors.	9 Tes saints enfants, la race des bons, offrirent donc en secret le sacrifice et s’engagèrent à observer cette loi divine: le peuple saint resterait solidaire dans le succès comme dans les périls; après quoi ils entonnèrent les chants de leurs pères.
10 In echo came the discordant cries of their enemies, and the pitiful wails of people mourning for theirchildren could be heard from far away.	10 Au même moment les clameurs confuses de leurs ennemis leur faisaient écho, avec les cris lamentables de ceux qui pleuraient leurs enfants.
11 One and the same punishment had struck slave and master alike, and now commoner and king hadthe same sufferings to endure.	11 Une même sentence frappait le serviteur et le maître; l’homme du peuple souffrait comme le roi.
12 Struck by the same death, al had innumerable dead. There were not enough living left to bury them,for, at one stroke, the flower of their offspring had perished.	12 Ils pleuraient des morts innombrables, tous frappés de la même mort; les vivants ne suffisaient plus pour les enterrer: toute la fleur de leur race avait péri en un instant.
13 Those whose spel s had made them completely incredulous, when faced with the destruction of theirfirst-born, acknowledged this people to be child of God.	13 Ils avaient d’abord refusé de croire, trompés par leurs magiciens, mais après la mort de leurs premiers-nés ils reconnurent que ce peuple était fils de Dieu.
14 When peaceful silence lay over all, and night had run the half of her swift course,	14 Alors que tout était tranquille dans le silence, et que la nuit parvenait au milieu de sa course,
15 down from the heavens, from the royal throne, leapt your al -powerful Word like a pitiless warrior intothe heart of a land doomed to destruction. Carrying your unambiguous command like a sharp sword,	15 ta Parole toute-puissante s’élança du haut des cieux, d’auprès de ton trône royal, et se précipita comme un guerrier farouche sur le pays voué à l’extermination. Elle portait, comme un glaive acéré, ton irrévocable décision;
16 it stood, and fil ed the universe with death; though standing on the earth, it touched the sky.	16 elle touchait le ciel et foulait la terre; lorsqu’elle frappa, elle jeta partout la mort.
17 Immediately, dreams and gruesome visions overwhelmed them with terror, unexpected fearsassailed them.	17 Aussitôt ils furent troublés par des apparitions et d’horribles cauchemars: une terreur sans nom s’abattit sur eux.
18 Hurled down, some here, some there, half dead, they were able to say why they were dying;	18 Lorsqu’ils tombaient demi-morts en tout lieu, ils savaient dire pourquoi ils mouraient,
19 for the dreams that had troubled them had warned them why beforehand, so that they should notperish without knowing why they were being afflicted.	19 car les songes qui les avaient troublés les avaient instruits. Ils ne devaient pas succomber sans savoir pourquoi il leur fallait souffrir.
20 Experience of death, however, touched the upright too, and a great many were struck down in thedesert. But the Retribution did not last long,	20 Il est vrai que les justes aussi firent l’expérience de la mort: le fléau frappa beaucoup d’entre eux dans le désert; mais la colère de Dieu ne dura pas.
21 for a blameless man hurried to their defence. Wielding the weapons of his sacred office, prayer andexpiating incense, he confronted Retribution and put an end to the plague, thus showing that he was yourservant.	21 Un homme irréprochable prit aussitôt leur défense avec les armes de son ministère: la prière et l’encens des sacrifices expiatoires. C’est ainsi qu’il affronta ta colère, Seigneur, et mit un terme à leur épreuve: on vit ainsi qu’il était ton serviteur.
22 He overcame Hostility, not by physical strength, nor by force of arms; but by word he prevailed overthe Punisher, by recal ing the oaths made to the Fathers, and the covenants.	22 Il vint à bout de ton ressentiment, non par la force physique ou l’efficacité des armes, mais grâce à ses paroles: il rappela à l’Exterminateur les promesses et les alliances conclues jadis avec nos pères.
23 Already the corpses lay piled in heaps, when he interposed and beat Retribution back and cut off itsapproach to the living.	23 Les morts déjà s’entassaient lorsqu’il s’interposa, mit fin à la Colère et lui barra le chemin des vivants.
24 For the whole world was on his flowing robe, the glorious names of the Fathers engraved on the fourrows of stones, and your Majesty on the diadem on his head.	24 Le monde entier était représenté sur sa longue tunique, il portait sur quatre rangs de pierres précieuses les noms glorieux de nos pères, et sur son front, le diadème de ta majesté.
25 From these the Destroyer recoiled, he was afraid of these. This one experience of Retribution wasenough.	25 À sa vue, l’Exterminateur recula et prit peur: cet avant-goût de ta colère avait suffi.
