1 The whole community of Israelites left the desert of Sin, travel ing by stages as Yahweh ordered. Theypitched camp at Rephidim where there was no water for the people to drink.	1 Partì di poi tutta la moltitudine de' figliuoli d'Israele dal deserto di Sin, e fatte le loro fermate secondo gli ordini del Signore, posero gli alloggiamenti a Raphidim, dove non ebbe il popolo acqua da bere.
2 The people took issue with Moses for this and said, 'Give us water to drink.' Moses replied, 'Why takeissue with me? Why do you put Yahweh to the test?'	2 E levatosi a romore contro Mosè, disse: Dacci acqua da bere. Rispose loro Mosè: Perché mormorate contro di me? Perché tentate voi il Signore?
3 But tormented by thirst, the people complained to Moses. 'Why did you bring us out of Egypt,' theysaid, 'only to make us, our children and our livestock, die of thirst?'	3 Pativa adunque in quel luogo il popolo per la sete mancando l'acqua, e mormorrò contro Mosè, dicendo: Perché ci hai tu fatti uscire dall'Egitto a far perire di sete noi, e i nostri figliuoli, e i giumenti?
4 Moses appealed to Yahweh for help. 'How am I to deal with this people?' he said. 'Any moment nowthey will stone me!'	4 Ma Mosè alzò la voce al Signore, dicendo: Che farò io di questo popolo? non andrà molto, che ei mi lapiderà.
5 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Go on ahead of the people, taking some of the elders of Israel with you;in your hand take the staff with which you struck the River, and go.	5 E il Signore disse a Mosè: Fatti incontro al popolo, e prendi teco de' seniori d'Israele: e prendi nella tua mano la verga, con cui percuotesti il fiume, e va'.
6 I shal be waiting for you there on the rock (at Horeb). Strike the rock, and water wil come out for thepeople to drink.' This was what Moses did, with the elders of Israel looking on.	6 Ecco che starò ivi dinanzi a te sopra la pietra di Horeb: e tu percuoterai la pietra, e ne scaturirà l'acqua, affinché il popolo beva. Così fece Mosè in presenza de' seniori d'Israele:
7 He gave the place the names Massah and Meribah because of the Israelites' contentiousness andbecause they put Yahweh to the test by saying, 'Is Yahweh with us, or not?'	7 E pose a quel luogo il nome di Tentazione a causa della mormorazione de' figliuoli d'Israele, e perché eglino tentaron il Signore, dicendo: È egli con noi il Signore, o non è?
8 The Amalekites then came and attacked Israel at Rephidim.	8 Ma gli Amaleciti vennero a dar battaglia ad Israele in Raphidim.
9 Moses said to Joshua, 'Pick some men and tomorrow morning go out and engage Amalek. I, for mypart, shal take my stand on the hil top with the staff of God in my hand.'	9 E disse Mosè a Giosuè: Fa' una scelta di uomini, e va' a combattere contro gli Amaleciti: domane io starò sulla cima del monte, tenendo la verga di Dio nella mia mano.
10 Joshua did as Moses had told him and went out to engage Amalek, while Moses, Aaron and Hurwent up to the top of the hil .	10 Fece Giosuè quello che Mosè avea detto, e attaccò la zuffa con Amalec: e Mosè, ed Aronne, ed Hur salirono sulla vetta del monte.
11 As long as Moses kept his arms raised, Israel had the advantage; when he let his arms fall, theadvantage went to Amalek.	11 E quando Mosè alzava le mani, Israele vinceva: ma se egli alcun poco abbassava le mani, Amalec era vincente.
12 But Moses' arms grew heavy, so they took a stone and put it under him and on this he sat, withAaron and Hur supporting his arms on each side. Thus his arms remained unwavering til sunset,	12 E Mosè avea stanche le braccia: presa adunque una pietra gliela poser sotto, ed ei vi si mise a sedere: e Aronne e Hur sostenevano a lui le braccia dall'una e dall'altra parte. Donde avvenne, che le sue braccia ressero immote fino al tramontar del sole.
13 and Joshua defeated Amalek, putting their people to the sword.	13 E Giosuè sbaragliò Amalec, e mise a fil di spada il suo esercito.
14 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Write this down in a book to commemorate it, and repeat it over toJoshua, for I shal blot out al memory of Amalek under heaven.'	14 E il Signore disse a Mosè: Scrivi questa cosa per memoria in un libro, e falla sapere a Giosuè; perocché io cancellerò sotto del cielo la memoria di Amalec.
15 Moses then built an altar and named it Yahweh-Nissi	15 E Mosè edificò un altare, a cui impose questo nome: Il Signore mia esaltazione, e disse:
16 meaning, 'Lay hold of Yahweh's banner! Yahweh wil be at war with Amalek generation aftergeneration.'	16 La mano del Signore dal soglio di lui sarà stesa, e farà guerra contro Amalec per tutte le generazioni.
