1 Ahithophel said to Absalom, 'Let me choose twelve thousand men and set off this very night in pursuitof David.	1 Disse Achitofel ad Assalom: io mi eleggerò duodeci milia uomini; e questa notte, levandomi, anderò dopo David.
2 I shal fal on him while he is tired and dispirited; I shal strike terror into him, and al the people whoare with him wil run away. I shal kil only the king,	2 E però ch' egli è lasso, sùbito lo assalirò, e sciolte le mani lo percuoterò; e fuggendo tutto il popolo da lui, io ucciderò lui solo, così abbandonato.
3 and I shal then bring al the people back to you, like a bride returning to her husband. You seek thelife of one individual only; the people as a whole wil have peace.'	3 E rimenerò tutto il popolo, come si suole menare uno uomo; e tutto il popolo rimanerà in pace.
4 The suggestion seemed a good one to Absalom and all the elders of Israel.	4 E piacque la sua parola ad Assalom e a tutti i maggiori d' Israel.
5 Then Absalom said, 'Now cal Hushai the Archite, for us to hear what he too has to say.'	5 E disse Assalom: chiamate Cusai Arachito, e audiamo quello ch' egli dica esso.
6 When Hushai had come to Absalom, Absalom said, 'This is what Ahithophel says. Are we to do as hesuggests? If not, suggest something yourself.'	6 E venuto Cusai ad Assalom, disse a lui: così fatto consiglio ci ha dato Achitofel; tu che ne di': dobbianlo fare o no? che consiglio ci dài?
7 Hushai said to Absalom, 'On this occasion the advice given by Ahithophel is not good.	7 E Cusai disse ad Assalom: non è buono consiglio quello che ha dato Achitofel questa volta.
8 You know', Hushai went on, 'that your father and his men are great fighters and that they are now asangry as a wild bear robbed of her cubs. Your father is a man of war: he wil not let the army rest during thenight.	8 E aggiunse Cusai: tu conosci il tuo padre e quelli uomini che sono con esso lui, i quali sono fortissimi e d' animo amaro, come l' orsa adirata nel deserto quando gli sono tolti i figliuoli; il padre tuo sì è uomo battagliere, e non istarà col popolo.
9 At this moment he is concealed in some hol ow or other place. If at the outset there are casualtiesamong our troops, word will go round that the army supporting Absalom has met with disaster.	9 E forse che adesso è egli nascoso in una fossa, o in qualunque luogo si vuole; e se pur morrà uno de' nostri così nel principio, e' si dirà: grande piaga è fatta nel popolo il quale seguitava Assalom.
10 And then even the valiant, the truly lion-hearted, will be demoralised; for al Israel knows that yourfather is a champion and that the men with him are valiant.	10 E il cuore di colui, che ora è quasi leone, isbigottirà; tutto Israel sa che il tuo padre è forte, e quelli che sono con esso lui essere robusti.
11 For my part, I offer this advice: Summon al Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, to ral y to you, asnumerous as the sand on the seashore, and you take the field in person with them.	11 Ma questo mi pare diritto consiglio: fa congregare a te tutto Israel, da Dan insino a Bersebee, quasi come la terra del mare; e tu sarai in mezzo di loro.
12 We shall reach him wherever he is to be found; we shal fal on him as the dew fal s on the ground,and not leave him or any one of the men with him.	12 E saremogli sùbito sopra in qualunque luogo sarà; e copriremlo, come la terra suole fare la rugiada; e degli uomini che sono anco con esso lui, non lasceremo pure uno.
13 Should he retire into a town, all Israel will bring ropes to that town, and we shal drag it into the river-bed until not a pebble of it is to be found.'	13 E s' egli è entrato in alcuna città, tutto Israel la circonderà pur con funi; e trarremola nel fiume, sì che non si trovi di lei pure una piastra d' uscio.
14 Then Absalom and al the people of Israel said, 'Hushai the Arkite's advice is better thanAhithophel's,' Yahweh having resolved to thwart Ahithophel's shrewd advice and so bring disaster on Absalom.	14 E disse Assalom, e tutti gli uomini d' Israel: il consiglio di Cusai sì è migliore che quello di Achitofel. E secondo la volontà di Dio, il consiglio di Achitofel utile fue dissipato, (apparendo buono in cospetto di Assalom il consiglio di Cusai) per ducere Iddio male sopra Assalom.
15 Hushai then told the priests Zadok and Abiathar, 'Ahithophel gave such and such advice to Absalomand the elders of Israel, but I advised so and so.	15 E Cusai disse a Sadoc e Abiatar sacerdoti: in cotale e in cotale modo ha dato consiglio Achitofel ad Assalom e agli antichi d'Israel, e io ho dato tale e tale consiglio.
16 Send with al speed to David and say, "Do not camp in the desert passes tonight, but get throughthem as fast as you can, or the king and his whole army may be annihilated." '	16 Ora mandate tosto a David, e significategli dicendo: non istare ista notte ne' campestri del deserto, ma senza dimoranza passa via, acciò che non sia tranghiottito il re, e tutti quelli che sono con esso lui.
17 Jonathan and Ahimaaz were posted at the Fuller's Spring; a servant-girl was to go and warn themand they in turn were to warn King David, since they could not give themselves away by coming into the citythemselves.	17 E Ionata e Achimaas stavano presso alla fonte di Rogel; e andò una fante e significogliele; e loro se n'andarono per significarlo a David, però che non poteano vedere nè entrare nella città.
18 A young man saw them nonetheless and told Absalom. The pair of them, however, made off quickly,reaching the house of a man in Bahurim. In his courtyard was a storage-wel and they got down into it.	18 E uno servo gli vidde, e significollo ad Assalom; e loro molto ratto entrarono in casa (di Baurim, cioè) d' uno di Baurim, il quale avea pozzo in casa sua, ed entrarono in esso.
19 The woman took a piece of canvas and, spreading it over the mouth of the storage-wel , scatteredcrushed grain on it so that nothing showed.	19 E una femina tolse uno panno, e isparselo sopra il pozzo, sì quasi come seccasse orzo mondo; e in questo modo la cosa fue occulta.
20 When Absalom's servants reached the woman at the house, they said, 'Where are Ahimaaz andJonathan?' The woman said, 'They have gone further on, towards the water.' They searched but, having foundnothing, went back to Jerusalem.	20 E venuta la famiglia di Assalom in casa, dissero a quella femina: dove sono Achimaas e Gionata? E la femina respuose: sono stati, e passarono ratti, assaggiato uno poco d'acqua. E quelli che cercavano, non trovandolo, ritornorono in Ierusalem.
21 When they had gone, the men climbed out of the storage-wel and went to warn King David. 'Set out!'they told David. 'Cross the water quickly, for Ahithophel has given such and such advice against you!'	21 E partiti loro, quelli ch' erano nel pozzo uscirono fuori, e annunziarono a David, e dissero: istate suso, e passate mo' ratti il fiume; però che cotale consiglio ha dato contro a voi Achitofel.
22 So David and al the troops with him set off and crossed the Jordan. By dawn no one was left, al hadcrossed the Jordan.	22 E levossi David, e tutto il popolo ch' era con lui, e passò il Giordano, tanto che fece il dì (prima che si sapesse il fatto); e solo uno non rimase, il quale non passasse il fiume.
23 When Ahithophel saw that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and set off andwent home to his own town. Then, having set his house in order, he hanged himself. He was buried in hisfather's tomb.	23 E Achitofel, veggendo che non era fatto il consiglio suo, levossi e sellò l'asino suo, e andossene alla sua casa nella sua citta; e ordinato ch' ebbe la casa sua, impiccossi, e così morìo; e fue sepolto nel sepolcro del suo padre.
24 David had reached Mahanaim by the time that Absalom crossed the Jordan with al the men of Israel.	24 E David se ne venne al campo, e Assalom passò il Giordano, ello e tutti gli uomini d'Israel con esso lui.
25 Absalom had put Amasa in command of the army in place of Joab. This Amasa was the son of aman cal ed Ithra the Ishmaelite, who had married Abigail, daughter of Jesse and sister of Zeruiah, mother ofJoab.	25 E fece Assalom, in iscambio di Ioab, sopra lo esercito Amasa, figliuolo d'uno uomo il quale avea nome letra di Iesraele, il quale entrò ad Abigail figliuola di Naas, suora di Sarvia, madre di Ioab.
26 Israel and Absalom pitched their camp in the territory of Gilead.	26 E puose campo Israel con esso Assalom nella terra di Galaad.
27 When David reached Mahanaim, Shobi son of Nahash from Rabbah-of-the-Ammonites, Machir sonof Ammiel from Lo-Debar, and Barzil ai the Gileadite from Rogelim	27 Ed essendo David venuto a campo, Sobi figliuolo di Naas di Rabbat de' figliuoli di Ammon, e Machir figliuolo di Ammiel di Lodabar, e Berzellai di Galaad di Rogelim,
28 brought bedding, rugs, bowls and crockery; and wheat, barley, meal, roasted grain, beans, lentils,	28 gli diedero letti e tappeti e vasi di terra, grano, orzo e farina, polenta, fave e lenti, e ceci fritti,
29 honey, curds and cows' cheese and sheep's cheese, which they presented to David and the peoplewith him for them to eat. 'The army', they said, 'must have been hungry, tired and thirsty in the desert.'	29 miele e butirro, pecore e grassi vitelli; a David, e al popolo ch' era con lui, diedero a mangiare; però che pensarono che il popolo fosse faticato di fame e di sete nel deserto.
