Sirach 25

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	Біблія
1 With three things I am delighted, for they are pleasing to the LORD and to men: Harmony among brethren, friendship among neighbors, and the mutual love of husband and wife.	1 У трьох речах милуюсь і в них красуюсь я перед Господом та перед людьми: згодою між братами, приязню між сусідами й жінкою та чоловіком, які дружньо живуть.
2 Three kinds of men I hate; their manner of life I loathe indeed: A proud pauper, a rich dissembler, and an old man lecherous in his dotage.	2 Три роди людей душі моїй осоружні, і життя їхнє вельми для мене бридке: бідний — пихатий, багатий — брехун і старий — перелюбець, що з глузду з’їхав.
3 What you have not saved in your youth, how will you acquire in your old age?	3 Коли ти нічого не назбирав за молодощів, то як же знайдеш за старощів твоїх?
4 How becoming to the gray-haired is judgment, and a knowledge of counsel to those on in years!	4 Яка ж то гарна річ для сивини — розсуд, і для старших — знати раду дати!
5 How becoming to the aged is wisdom, understanding and prudence to the venerable!	5 Яка ж бо гарна для старих — мудрість, і для поважаних — розважність і порада!
6 The crown of old men is wide experience; their glory, the fear of the LORD.	6 Вінець старих — великий їхній досвід, і похвальне в них — острах Господній.
7 There are nine who come to my mind as blessed, a tenth whom my tongue proclaims: The man who finds joy in his children, and he who lives to see his enemies' downfall.	7 Дев’ять речей блаженними вважаю я у серці, десяту ж висловлю словами: чоловік, який дітьми утішається, а й який за життя ворогів падіння звидів.
8 Happy is he who dwells with a sensible wife, and he who plows not like a donkey yoked with an ox. Happy is he who sins not with his tongue, and he who serves not his inferior.	8 Щасливий, хто живе з розумною жінкою, хто язиком своїм не послизнувся, а й хто не служив від себе негіднішому.
9 Happy is he who finds a friend and he who speaks to attentive ears.	9 Щасливий той, хто знайшов обачність, а й той, хто повідає вухам уважним.
10 He who finds wisdom is great indeed, but not greater than he who fears the LORD.	10 Великий той, хто знайшов мудрість, — та немає над того, хто Господа страхається.
11 Fear of the LORD surpasses all else. its possessor is beyond compare.	11 Острах Господній усе перевищує: хто його має, кому він рівня?
12 Worst of all wounds is that of the heart, worst of all evils is that of a woman.	12 Острах Господній — початок любови до нього, віра — початок приєднання до нього.
13 Worst of all sufferings is that from one's foes, worst of all vengeance is that of one's enemies:	13 Усяка рана, але не рана серця! Усяка злоба, але не злоба жінки!
14 No poison worse than that of a serpent, no venom greater than that of a woman.	14 Усяке нещастя, та не нещастя від ненависників, і всяку помсту, та не помсту вражу!
15 With a dragon or a lion I would rather dwell than live with an evil woman.	15 Бо нема отрути над отруту змія, і немає гніву над гнів ворога.
16 Wickedness changes a woman's looks, and makes her sullen as a female bear.	16 Жити я волію з левом та драконом, аніж з лихою жінкою жити.
17 When her husband sits among his neighbors, a bitter sigh escapes him unawares.	17 Лукавство жінки вид її змінює, обличчя робить темним, мов у ведмедя.
18 There is scarce any evil like that in a woman; may she fall to the lot of the sinner!	18 Чоловік її, сидівши собі з ближніми, хоче — не хоче, а гірко зідхає.
19 Like a sandy hill to aged feet is a railing wife to a quiet man.	19 Мала всяка злоба супроти злоби жіночої — хай же доля грішника отаку спіткає!
20 Stumble not through woman's beauty, nor be greedy for her wealth;	20 Що ногам старого по піску вгору дряпатись, те язиката жінка спокійному чоловікові.
21 The man is a slave, in disgrace and shame, when a wife supports her husband.	21 Не дай себе обманути жіночою красою, і не пожадай ніколи жінки.
22 Depressed mind, saddened face, broken heart--this from an evil wife. Feeble hands and quaking knees-- from a wife who brings no happiness to her husband.	22 Гідне гніву, стидке й вельми ганебне, коли жінка утримує свого чоловіка.
23 In woman was sin's beginning, and because of her we all die.	23 Прибите серце, вигляд сумний, рана в серці — від жінки лихої; безсилі руки, коліна немічні — від жінки, що чоловіка свого знещасливлює.
24 Allow water no outlet, and be not indulgent to an erring wife.	24 Від жінки гріх почався — з-за неї й усі вмираємо.
25 If she walks not by your side, cut her away from you.	25 Не давай воді витікати, а жінці лихій — робити по-своєму.
	26 Як вона не під твоєю рукою — віддали її від себе.
