| 1 Or avvenne in quel tempo che si raunarono i Filistei per far guerra: e Israele uscì in campo per andar incontro a' Filistei, e combattergli, e pose gli alloggiamenti vicino alla Pietra del soccorso. E i Filistei giunsero ad Aphec, | 1 And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out to battle against the Philistines; they encamped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines encamped at Aphek. |
| 2 E ordinaron l'esercito in faccia ad Israele. E venuti che furono a battaglia, Israele voltò le spalle a' Filistei, e furono trucidati in conflitto qua e là per i campi circa quattro mila uomini. | 2 The Philistines drew up in line against Israel, and when the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who slew about four thousand men on the field of battle. |
| 3 E tornato il popolo negli alloggiamenti, dissero i seniori d'Israele: Per qual motivo il Signore ci ha egli oggi malmenati in faccia ai Filistei? Meniamo tra noi da Silo l'arca del testamento del Signore, ed ella venga in mezzo a noi, affinchè ci salvi dalle mani de' nostri nemici. | 3 And when the troops came to the camp, the elders of Israel said, "Why has the LORD put us to rout today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD here from Shiloh, that he may come among us and save us from the power of our enemies." |
| 4 Il popolo adunque spedì gente a Silo, e di là portarono l’arca del testamento del Signore degli eserciti, il quale siede sopra i Cherubini: e i due figliuoli di Heli, Ophni, e Phinees, seguivano l'arca del testamento di Dio. | 4 So the people sent to Shiloh, and brought from there the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, who is enthroned on the cherubim; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God. |
| 5 E allorché arrivò l’arca del testamento del Signore negli alloggiamenti, sclamò tutto Israele con alte grida, e ne rimbombò la terra. | 5 When the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel gave a mighty shout, so that the earth resounded. |
| 6 E i Filistei udirono le alte grida, e dissero: Qual rumore, e schiamazzo grande è quel che si sente nel campo degli Ebrei? E intesero, com'era arrivata l'arca del Signore negli alloggiamenti. | 6 And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shouting, they said, "What does this great shouting in the camp of the Hebrews mean?" And when they learned that the ark of the LORD had come to the camp, |
| 7 E i Filistei s'impaurirono, e dicevano: È venuto Dio ne' loro alloggiamenti. E sospiravano, dicendo: | 7 the Philistines were afraid; for they said, "A god has come into the camp." And they said, "Woe to us! For nothing like this has happened before. |
| 8 Guai a noi: perocché coloro non erano tanto allegri ieri, nè ieri l'altro: guai a noi. Chi ci salverà dalle mani di questi dei eccelsi? questi sono gli dei che fiaccaron l'Egitto con ogni sorta di sciagure presso al deserto. | 8 Woe to us! Who can deliver us from the power of these mighty gods? These are the gods who smote the Egyptians with every sort of plague in the wilderness. |
| 9 Fatevi cuore, o Filistei, e siate uomini per non essere servi degli Ebrei, come questi sono stati servi vostri: fatevi cuore, e pugnate. | 9 Take courage, and acquit yourselves like men, O Philistines, lest you become slaves to the Hebrews as they have been to you; acquit yourselves like men and fight." |
| 10 Combatteron pertanto i Filistei, e Israele fu sconfitto, e se ne fuggì ciascuno alla sua tenda, e la rotta fu grande formisura: e perirono degl'Israeliti trenta mila pedoni. | 10 So the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and they fled, every man to his home; and there was a very great slaughter, for there fell of Israel thirty thousand foot soldiers. |
| 11 E fu presa l'arca di Dio: e anche i due figliuoli di Heli, Ophni, e Phinees, furono uccisi. | 11 And the ark of God was captured; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain. |
| 12 E un uomo di Beniamin fuggito dalla battaglia arrivò a Silo lo stesso giorno colla veste stracciata, e la testa coperta di polvere. | 12 A man of Benjamin ran from the battle line, and came to Shiloh the same day, with his clothes rent and with earth upon his head. |
| 13 E all'arrivo di lui Heli era assiso sopra una seggiola guardando verso la strada. Perocché il suo cuore era pien di timore per l'arca di Dio. E giunto quell'uomo portò la nuova nella città: e tutta la città si diede ad urlare. | 13 When he arrived, Eli was sitting upon his seat by the road watching, for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city and told the news, all the city cried out. |
| 14 Ed Heli udì lo strepito delle grida, e disse: Che significa questo romore, e turbamento? Ma quegli in fretta arrivò, e diede ad Heli la nuova. | 14 When Eli heard the sound of the outcry, he said, "What is this uproar?" Then the man hastened and came and told Eli. |
| 15 Or Heli avea novant'otto anni, e gli occhi di lui erano ottenebrati, e non potea più vedere. | 15 Now Eli was ninety-eight years old and his eyes were set, so that he could not see. |
| 16 E quegli disse ad Heli: Son io che vengo dalla battaglia, e io che oggi sono fuggito dal conflitto. Ed Heli gli disse: Che è avvenuto, figliuol mio? | 16 And the man said to Eli, "I am he who has come from the battle; I fled from the battle today." And he said, "How did it go, my son?" |
| 17 Rispose l'uomo che portava la nuova: Israele ha volte le spalle a' Filistei, e grande è stata la strage del popolo: e oltre a questo sono morti anche i due tuoi figliuoli, Ophni, e Phinees, ed è stata presa l'arca di Dio. | 17 He who brought the tidings answered and said, "Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has also been a great slaughter among the people; your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured." |
| 18 Appena quegli ebbe nominata l'arca di Dio, che (Heli) cadde dalla sua sedia all’indietro vicino alla porta, e rottosi il collo morì. Perocché egli era vecchio, e di età decrepita: ed ei fu giudice d'Israele per quarant'anni. | 18 When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell over backward from his seat by the side of the gate; and his neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and heavy. He had judged Israel forty years. |
| 19 E la nuora di lui moglie di Phinees, era gravida e prossima al parto: e udita la nuova dell’arca di Dio presa, e della morte del suo suocero, e del suo marito, si chinò, e partorì: perocché era stata subitamente sorpresa da’ dolori. | 19 Now his daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was with child, about to give birth. And when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was captured, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed and gave birth; for her pains came upon her. |
| 20 E nel punto stesso, in cui ella moriva, le dissero quelle che le stavan d'intorno: Fatti animo; tu hai partorito un figliuolo. Ma ella non diede loro risposta, nè vi fece attenzione. | 20 And about the time of her death the women attending her said to her, "Fear not, for you have borne a son." But she did not answer or give heed. |
| 21 E al bambino diede il nome d'Ichabod, dicendo: E’ passata la gloria d'Israele: a motivo dell'essere stata presa l'arca di Dio, e per riflesso al suo suocero e al suo marito. | 21 And she named the child Ichabod, saying, "The glory has departed from Israel!" because the ark of God had been captured and because of her father-in-law and her husband. |
| 22 Ma ella disse: È passata la gloria d'Israele: per essere stata presa l'arca di Dio. | 22 And she said, "The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured." |
