| 1 Similmente anche le donne sian soggette a' loro mariti: anche perché se alcuni non credono alla parola, siano guadagnati senza la parola dai portamenti delle mogli, | 1 Likewise you wives, be submissive to your husbands, so that some, though they do not obey the word, may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, |
| 2 Considerando quegli (insieme) colla riverenza la casta vostra condotta. | 2 when they see your reverent and chaste behavior. |
| 3 Delle quali l'ornato non sia al di fuori l'acconciatura de' capelli, o l'oro, che si mettano dattorno, o le vestimenta, onde si ammantino: | 3 Let not yours be the outward adorning with braiding of hair, decoration of gold, and wearing of fine clothing, |
| 4 Ma quell'uomo ascoso del cuore con quello, che non si corrompe, Spirito tranquillo, e modesto, che è cosa preziosa nel cospetto di Dio. | 4 but let it be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable jewel of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious. |
| 5 Imperocché così una volta anche le donne sante, che in Dio speravano, sì adornavano, stando soggette a' loro mariti. | 5 So once the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves and were submissive to their husbands, |
| 6 Come Sara era ubbidiente ad Abramo, chiamandolo signore: della quale voi siete figliuole, operando il bene, e non essendo sbigottite da qualsisia spavento. | 6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are now her children if you do right and let nothing terrify you. |
| 7 Voi, mariti, parimente convivete con saggezza con le mogli, e come ad arnese più fragile rendete onore, ed anche come a coeredi della grazia di vita affinchè impedite non siano le vostre orazioni. | 7 Likewise you husbands, live considerately with your wives, bestowing honor on the woman as the weaker sex, since you are joint heirs of the grace of life, in order that your prayers may not be hindered. |
| 8 Finalmente tutti unanimi, compassionevoli, amanti de' fratelli, misericordiosi, modesti, umili: | 8 Finally, all of you, have unity of spirit, sympathy, love of the brethren, a tender heart and a humble mind. |
| 9 Non rendendo male per male, né maledizione per maledizione, ma pel contrario benedicendo: imperocché a questo siete stati chiamati, affinchè abbiate in retaggio la benedizione. | 9 Do not return evil for evil or reviling for reviling; but on the contrary bless, for to this you have been called, that you may obtain a blessing. |
| 10 Chi adunque vuole, ed ama la vita, e di vedere de' giorni beati, raffreni la sua lingua dal male, e le labbra di lui non parlino inganno. | 10 For "He that would love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking guile; |
| 11 Schivi il male, e faccia il bene: cerchi la pace, e le vada dietro: | 11 let him turn away from evil and do right; let him seek peace and pursue it. |
| 12 Dappoiché gli occhi del Signore sopra de' giusti, e le orecchie di lui alle loro orazioni: ma la faccia di Dio contro di coloro che mal fanno. | 12 For the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those that do evil." |
| 13 E chi è, che a voi noccia se sarete zelanti del bene? | 13 Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is right? |
| 14 Ma di più se alcuna cosa patite per la giustizia, beati voi. Non paventate però gli spauracchi di coloro, e non vi turbate. | 14 But even if you do suffer for righteousness' sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, |
| 15 Ma benedite ne' vostri cuori Cristo Signore, pronti sempre a dar satisfazione a chiunque vi domandi ragione della speranza, che avete dentro di voi: | 15 but in your hearts reverence Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to make a defense to any one who calls you to account for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and reverence; |
| 16 Ma con modestia, e rispetto, conservando buona coscienza: onde invece che sparlan di voi, rimangano confusi quegli, che intaccano la buona vostra maniera di vivere secondo Cristo. | 16 and keep your conscience clear, so that, when you are abused, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. |
| 17 Imperocché è meglio il patire (se cosi piaccia al voler di Dio) ben facendo, che operando male: | 17 For it is better to suffer for doing right, if that should be God's will, than for doing wrong. |
| 18 Conciossiachè anche Cristo una volta pei peccati nostri morì, il giusto pegli ingiusti, affine di offerir noi a Dio, essendo stato messo a morte secondo la carne, vivificato poi per lo Spirito. | 18 For Christ also died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit; |
| 19 Pel quale eziandio andò a predicare a quegli spiriti, che erano in carcere: | 19 in which he went and preached to the spirits in prison, |
| 20 I quali erano stati una volta increduli, allorché la pazienza di Dio stava aspettando ne' giorni di Noè, mentre fabbricavasi l'arca: nella quale pochi, cioè otto anime si salvaron sopra l'acqua. | 20 who formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water. |
| 21 Alla qual cosa corrisponde adesso quel battesimo, che vi salva (non ripulimento delle sozzure della carne, ma contratto di buona coscienza fatto con Dio) per mezzo della risurrezione di Gesù Cristo, | 21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, |
| 22 Il quale sta alla destra di Dio, ingoiata avendo la morte, perché noi diventassimo eredi dalla vita eterna: essendo andato al cielo, soggettati a se gli Angeli, e le potestà, e le vertudi. | 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers subject to him. |
