| 1 O Galati mentecatti, chi vi ha affascinati talmente, che non ubbidiate alla verità voi, dinanzi agli occhi de' quali fù già dipinto Gesù Cristo, tra voi crocifisso? | 1 O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? |
| 2 Questo solo bramo di imparar da voi: avete voi ricevuto lo Spirito per le opere della legge, o per l'ubbidienza alla fede? | 2 Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law, or by hearing with faith? |
| 3 Siete tanto stolti, che avendo principiato collo Spirito, finite ora colla carne? | 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun with the Spirit, are you now ending with the flesh? |
| 4 Avete patito tanto senza ragione? Se però senza ragione. | 4 Did you experience so many things in vain?--if it really is in vain. |
| 5 Chi adunque da a voi lo Spirito, e opera tra voi i miracoli, lo fa egli per le opere della legge, o per l'ubbidienza alla fede? | 5 Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith? |
| 6 Come sta scritto: Abramo credette a Dio, e gli fu imputato a giustizia. | 6 Thus Abraham "believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness." |
| 7 Intendete adunque, che quegli, che sono della fede, son figliuoli di Abramo. | 7 So you see that it is men of faith who are the sons of Abraham. |
| 8 Ma la scrittura prevedendo in futuro, come Dio era per giustificare i Gentili per mezzo della fede, anticipatamente evangelizzò ad Abramo: saranno in te benedette tutte le genti. | 8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, "In you shall all the nations be blessed." |
| 9 Quegli adunque, che sono per la fede, saranno benedetti con Abramo fedele. | 9 So then, those who are men of faith are blessed with Abraham who had faith. |
| 10 Imperocché tutti quegli, che sono per le opere della legge, sono sotto la maledizione. Imperocché sta scritto: maledetto chiunque non si terrà fermo a tutte quelle cose, che sono scritte nel libro della legge per adempierle. | 10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, "Cursed be every one who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law, and do them." |
| 11 Che poi nissuno sia giustificato appresso Dio per mezzo della legge, è manifesto, dappoiché il giusto vive per la fede. | 11 Now it is evident that no man is justified before God by the law; for "He who through faith is righteous shall live"; |
| 12 Or la legge non è per la fede, ma, chi farà quelle cose, avrà vita per esse. | 12 but the law does not rest on faith, for "He who does them shall live by them." |
| 13 Cristo ci ha redenti dalla maledizione della legge divenuto per noi maledizione: perché sta scritto: maledetto chiunque pende sul legno: | 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us--for it is written, "Cursed be every one who hangs on a tree"-- |
| 14 Affinchè alle genti pervenisse la benedizione di Abramo in Cristo Gesù, affinchè noi ricevessimo la promessa dello Spirito per mezzo della fede. | 14 that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. |
| 15 Fratelli (io parlo da uomo) a un testamento benché di uomo, autenticato che è, nissuno da di bianco, o vi aggiunge. | 15 To give a human example, brethren: no one annuls even a man's will, or adds to it, once it has been ratified. |
| 16 Ad Abramo furono annunziate le promesse, e al seme di lui. Non dice: e ai semi, come a' molti: ma come ad uno: e al seme tuo, il quale è Cristo. | 16 Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, "And to offsprings," referring to many; but, referring to one, "And to your offspring," which is Christ. |
| 17 Or io dico così: il testamento confermato da Dio, non è renduto vano da quella legge, che fu fatta quattrocento, e trentanni dopo, talmente che abolita sia la promessa. | 17 This is what I mean: the law, which came four hundred and thirty years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to make the promise void. |
| 18 Imperocché se l'eredità è per la legge, già non è ella più per la promessa. Ma Dio gratificò Abramo per mezzo della promessa. | 18 For if the inheritance is by the law, it is no longer by promise; but God gave it to Abraham by a promise. |
| 19 A che adunque la legge? Fa ella: aggiunta a causa delle trasgressioni per sino a tanto che venisse quel seme, cui era stata fatta la promessa, ed era stata intimata per ministero degli Angeli in mano del mediatore. | 19 Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made; and it was ordained by angels through an intermediary. |
| 20 Ma il mediatore non è di un solo: e Dio è uno. | 20 Now an intermediary implies more than one; but God is one. |
| 21 La legge adunque è ella contro le promesse di Dio? Mai no. Imperocché' se fosse stata data una legge, che potesse vivificare, dalla legge sarebbe veramente la giustizia. | 21 Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not; for if a law had been given which could make alive, then righteousness would indeed be by the law. |
| 22 Ma la scrittura tutto chiuse sotto il peccato, affinchè la promessa fosse data a' credenti mediante la fede di Gesù Cristo. | 22 But the scripture consigned all things to sin, that what was promised to faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. |
| 23 Ma avanti che venisse la fede eravamo custoditi sotto la legge, chiusi in aspettazione di quella fede, che doveva essere rivelata. | 23 Now before faith came, we were confined under the law, kept under restraint until faith should be revealed. |
| 24 Fu adunque la legge il nostro pedagogo per condurci a Cristo, affinchè fossimo giustificati per la fede. | 24 So that the law was our custodian until Christ came, that we might be justified by faith. |
| 25 Ma venuta la fede, non siamo già più sotto pedagogo. | 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a custodian; |
| 26 Imperocché tutti siete figliuoli di Dio per la fede in Cristo Gesù. | 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. |
| 27 Conciossiaché tutti voi, che siete stati battezzati in Cristo, vi siete rivestiti di Cristo. | 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. |
| 28 Non v' ha Giudeo, né Greco, né' servo, né libero, non v'ha maschio, né' femmina. Imperocché tutti voi siete uno solo in Cristo Gesù. | 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. |
| 29 Che se voi siete di Cristo: dunque siete seme di Abramo, eredi secondo la promessa. | 29 And if you are Christs, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise. |
