| 1 Ho determinato meco stesso di non venir di nuovo da voi per attristarvi. | 1 For I made up my mind not to make you another painful visit. |
| 2 Imperocché se io vi contristo: e chi è che rallegri me, fuori di chi è stato da me contristato? | 2 For if I cause you pain, who is there to make me glad but the one whom I have pained? |
| 3 E questo stesso ve lo ho scritta, affinchè venendo io, non riceva tristezza sopra tristezza da quegli, da' quali doveva io avere allegrezza: fidandomi di tutti voi, che abbiate tutti per vostro il mio gaudio. | 3 And I wrote as I did, so that when I came I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice, for I felt sure of all of you, that my joy would be the joy of you all. |
| 4 Imperocché in grande afflizione, e ansietà di cuore vi scrissi con molte lagrime: non per contristarvi: ma affinchè conosceste la carità, che io lo abbondantissima verso di voi. | 4 For I wrote you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you. |
| 5 Che se alcuno fu cagion di tristezza, non recò a me se non parte di tristezza: affinchè io non faccia aggravio a tutti voi. | 5 But if any one has caused pain, he has caused it not to me, but in some measure--not to put it too severely-- to you all. |
| 6 Basta per questo tale questa riprensione fatta da molti: | 6 For such a one this punishment by the majority is enough; |
| 7 Onde per lo contrario voi usiate indulgenza, e lo consoliate, affinchè per disgrazia non sia da eccessiva tristezza assorto questo tale. | 7 so you should rather turn to forgive and comfort him, or he may be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. |
| 8 Vi scongiuro perciò a ratificare la carità verso di lui. | 8 So I beg you to reaffirm your love for him. |
| 9 Imperocché con questo fine ancora ho scritto, per conoscervi alla prova, se siate in tutto ubbidienti. | 9 For this is why I wrote, that I might test you and know whether you are obedient in everything. |
| 10 Or con chi avete usato voi indulgenza, la uso anch'io: imperocché io pure dove ho usato indulgenza (se alcuna ne ho usata) per amor vostro li ho usata a nome di Cristo, | 10 Any one whom you forgive, I also forgive. What I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sake in the presence of Christ, |
| 11 Affinchè non siamo soverchiati da satana: conciossiachè non ci sono ignote le cabale di lui. | 11 to keep Satan from gaining the advantage over us; for we are not ignorant of his designs. |
| 12 Or essendo io giunto a Troade pel vangelo di Cristo, ed essendomi stata aperta la porta dal Signore, | 12 When I came to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ, a door was opened for me in the Lord; |
| 13 Non ebbi requie nel mio spirito per non aver trovato il mio fratello Tito, ma salutati quegli, partii per la Macedonia. | 13 but my mind could not rest because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I took leave of them and went on to Macedonia. |
| 14 Grazie però a Dio, il quale ci fa sempre trionfanti in Cristo Gesù, e rende manifesto l'odore della cognizione di lui in ogni luogo per mezzo nostro: | 14 But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumph, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. |
| 15 Dappoiché il buon odore di Cristo siam noi a Dio, e per que', che si salvano, e per que', che periscono: | 15 For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, |
| 16 Per gli uni odor di morte per loro morte; per gli altri odore di vita per loro vita. E per tali cose chi è che sia tanto idoneo? | 16 to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life. Who is sufficient for these things? |
| 17 Imperocché non siamo come moltissimi, che falsificano la parola di Dio, ma con sincerità, come da parte di Dio parliamo dinanzi a Dio in Cristo. | 17 For we are not, like so many, peddlers of God's word; but as men of sincerity, as commissioned by God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ. |
