| 1 Disse adunque il principe de' sacerdoti: queste cose stanno elleno così? | 1 And the high priest said, "Is this so?" |
| 2 Ma egli disse: Uomini fratelli, e padri udite: il Dio della gloria apparì al padre nostro Abramo, mentre era nella Mesopotamia, prima che abitasse in Charran, | 2 And Stephen said: "Brethren and fathers, hear me. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran, |
| 3 E disselli: Parti dalla tua terra, e dalla tua parentela, e vieni in quel paese, che io ti mostrerò. | 3 and said to him, 'Depart from your land and from your kindred and go into the land which I will show you.' |
| 4 Allora esci dalla terra de' Caldei, e abitò in Charran. E di là, morto che fu suo padre, trasportollo (Dio) in questo paese, dove ora voi abitate. | 4 Then he departed from the land of the Chaldeans, and lived in Haran. And after his father died, God removed him from there into this land in which you are now living; |
| 5 E non gli diede di esso in proprietà nemmen tanto da posare il piede: ma gli promise di farne padrone lui, e la sua discendenza dopo di lui, non avendo egli prole. | 5 yet he gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot's length, but promised to give it to him in possession and to his posterity after him, though he had no child. |
| 6 E Dio gli disse, che la discendenza di lui sarebbe pellegrina in paese altrui, e la avrebbero posta in ischiavitù, e sarebbe maltrattata per quattrocento anni: | 6 And God spoke to this effect, that his posterity would be aliens in a land belonging to others, who would enslave them and ill-treat them four hundred years. |
| 7 E la nazione, di cui sarà stata schiava, la giudicherò io, disse il Signore: e dopo queste cose usciranno, e serviranno a me in questo luogo. | 7 'But I will judge the nation which they serve,' said God, 'and after that they shall come out and worship me in this place.' |
| 8 E diedegli l'alleanza della circoncisione: e così egli generò Isacco, e lo circoncise l'ottavo giorno: e Isacco Giacobbe, e Giacobbe i dodici patriarchi. | 8 And he gave him the covenant of circumcision. And so Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day; and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs. |
| 9 I patriarchi poi per invidia venderon Giuseppe, onde fu condotto in Egitto: ma Dio era con lui: | 9 "And the patriarchs, jealous of Joseph, sold him into Egypt; but God was with him, |
| 10 Ed egli lo cavò fuora di tutto le sue tribolazioni: e diedegli grazia, e sapienza dinanzi a Faraone re d'Egitto, onde lo costituì soprintendente dell'Egitto, e di tutta la sua casa. | 10 and rescued him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who made him governor over Egypt and over all his household. |
| 11 Venne di poi la fame sopra tutto l'Egitto, e nella Chananea, e miseria grande: e i padri nostri non trovavano da mangiare. | 11 Now there came a famine throughout all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction, and our fathers could find no food. |
| 12 E avendo udito Giacobbe, che vi era del grano in Egitto, mandò da prima i padri nostri: | 12 But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent forth our fathers the first time. |
| 13 E la seconda volta fu riconosciuto Giuseppe da' suoi fratelli, e si rese nota a Faraone la stirpe di lui. | 13 And at the second visit Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and Joseph's family became known to Pharaoh. |
| 14 E Giuseppe mandò a chiamare il padre suo Giacobbe, e tutta la sua famiglia di settantacinque anime. | 14 And Joseph sent and called to him Jacob his father and all his kindred, seventy-five souls; |
| 15 E andò Giacobbe in Egitto, e morì egli, e i padri nostri. | 15 and Jacob went down into Egypt. And he died, himself and our fathers, |
| 16 E furon trasportati a Sichem, eposti nel sepolcro comperato da Abramo a prezzo di denaro da' figliuoli di Emmor figliuolo di Sichem. | 16 and they were carried back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham had bought for a sum of silver from the sons of Hamor in Shechem. |
| 17 Ma avvicinandosi il tempo della promessa giurata da Dio ad Abramo, crebbe, e multiplicò, il popolo nell'Egitto, | 17 "But as the time of the promise drew near, which God had granted to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt |
| 18 Sino a tantoché venne un altro re dell'Egitto, il quale non sapeva nulla di Giuseppe. | 18 till there arose over Egypt another king who had not known Joseph. |
| 19 Questi usando astuzie contro la nostra stirpe, maltrattò i padri nostri di modo, cha esponessero i proprj figli, perché non si propagassero. | 19 He dealt craftily with our race and forced our fathers to expose their infants, that they might not be kept alive. |
| 20 Nello stesso tempo nacque Mosè, ed era caro a Dio, il quale fu nudrito per tre mesi nella casa di suo padre. | 20 At this time Moses was born, and was beautiful before God. And he was brought up for three months in his father's house; |
| 21 E quando fu esposto, lo raccolse la figliuola di Faraone, e se lo allevò come figliuolo. | 21 and when he was exposed, Pharaoh's daughter adopted him and brought him up as her own son. |
| 22 E fu addottrinato Mosè in tutta la sapienza degli Egiziani, ed era potente in parole, e in opere. | 22 And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds. |
| 23 Compiuta poi che ebbe l'età di quarant' anni, gli entrò in cuore di visitare i suoi fratelli, i figliuoli d'Israello. | 23 "When he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren, the sons of Israel. |
| 24 E vedutone uno, che veniva maltrattato, prestogli aiuto: e fece le vendette dell'oppresso, avendo ucciso l'Egiziano. | 24 And seeing one of them being wronged, he defended the oppressed man and avenged him by striking the Egyptian. |
| 25 Ed egli si pensava, che i suoi fratelli intenderebbero, come Dio per mano di lui dava loro la salute: ma essi non l'intesero. | 25 He supposed that his brethren understood that God was giving them deliverance by his hand, but they did not understand. |
| 26 Il dì seguente si fece vedere ad essi, mentre altercavano: e gli esortava alla pace, dicendo: O uomini, voi siete fratelli perché vi fate del male l'un all'altro? | 26 And on the following day he appeared to them as they were quarreling and would have reconciled them, saying, 'Men, you are brethren, why do you wrong each other?' |
| 27 Ma colui, che faceva ingiuria al prossimo, lo rispinse, dicendo: Chi ti ha costituito principe, e giudice sopra di noi? | 27 But the man who was wronging his neighbor thrust him aside, saying, 'Who made you a ruler and a judge over us? |
| 28 Vuoi tu forse uccidermi, come uccidesti jeri l'Egiziano? | 28 Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?' |
| 29 A questa parola fuggì Mosè: e stette pellegrino nella terra di Madiàn, dove generò due figliuoli. | 29 At this retort Moses fled, and became an exile in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons. |
| 30 E passati quaranta anni gli apparì nel deserto del monte Sina l'Angelo nel fuoco fiammante di un roveto. | 30 "Now when forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush. |
| 31 Veduto ciò si stupì Mosè della apparizione: e accostandosi egli per osservare, udì una voce del Signore, che dissegli: | 31 When Moses saw it he wondered at the sight; and as he drew near to look, the voice of the Lord came, |
| 32 Io sono il Dio de' padri tuoi, il Dio di Abramo, il Dio di Isacco, il Dio di Giacobbe. Atterrito Mosè non ardiva di osservare. | 32 'I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob.' And Moses trembled and did not dare to look. |
| 33 Ma il Signore gli disse: Cavati da' tuoi piedi le scarpe: perché il luogo, dove stai, è terra santa. | 33 And the Lord said to him, 'Take off the shoes from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground. |
| 34 Ho veduto, ho veduto l'afflizione del popolo mio, che è in Egitto, e ho uditi i loro gemiti, e sono disceso per liberargli. Ora vieni, e ti manderò in Egitto. | 34 I have surely seen the ill-treatment of my people that are in Egypt and heard their groaning, and I have come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send you to Egypt.' |
| 35 Questo Mosè, cui rifiutarono col dire: Chi ti ha costituito principe, e giudice? questo e principe, e liberatore mandollo Iddio per ministero dell'Angelo, che gli apparì nel roveto. | 35 "This Moses whom they refused, saying, 'Who made you a ruler and a judge?' God sent as both ruler and deliverer by the hand of the angel that appeared to him in the bush. |
| 36 Questi li trasse fuori, avendo fatto segni, e prodigj nella terra di Egitto, e nel mare rosso, e nel deserto per quaranta anni. | 36 He led them out, having performed wonders and signs in Egypt and at the Red Sea, and in the wilderness for forty years. |
| 37 Questi è quel Mosè, che disse a' figliuoli d'Israele: Dio susciterà a voi un profeta del numero de' vostri fratelli, come me, lui ascolterete. | 37 This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, 'God will raise up for you a prophet from your brethren as he raised me up.' |
| 38 Questi è, che fu colla adunanza del popolo nel deserto coll' Angelo, che gli parlava nel monte Sina, e con i padri nostri: e ricevette le parole di vita per darle a noi, | 38 This is he who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our fathers; and he received living oracles to give to us. |
| 39 Al quale non vollero essere ubbidienti i padri nostri: ma lo rigettarono e si rivolsero co' loro cuori all'Egitto, | 39 Our fathers refused to obey him, but thrust him aside, and in their hearts they turned to Egypt, |
| 40 Dicendo ad Aronne: Fa' a noi degli dei, i quali ci vadano innanzi: perchè di quel Mosè, che ci ha tratti dalla terra di Egitto, non sappiam quel, che ne sia stato. | 40 saying to Aaron, 'Make for us gods to go before us; as for this Moses who led us out from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.' |
| 41 E fecer di que' giorni un vitello, e offerirono sagrifizio a un simolacro, e si rallegrarono delle opere delle lor mani. | 41 And they made a calf in those days, and offered a sacrifice to the idol and rejoiced in the works of their hands. |
| 42 Ma Dio da lor si rivolse, egli diede a servire alla milizia del cielo, come sta scritto nel libro de' profeti: Mi avete voi forse offerto vittime, e ostie per quaranta anni nel deserto o casa d'Israele? | 42 But God turned and gave them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: 'Did you offer to me slain beasts and sacrifices, forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel? |
| 43 Ma voi avete portato il padiglione di Moloch, e l'astro del vostro Dio Rempham, figure fatte da voi per adorarle. E io vi trasporterò di là da Babilonia. | 43 And you took up the tent of Moloch, and the star of the god Rephan, the figures which you made to worship; and I will remove you beyond Babylon.' |
| 44 Ebbero i padri nostri il tabernacolo del testimonio nel deserto, conforme aveva ordinato Dio, dicendo a Mosè, che lo facesse secondo il modello, che avea veduto. | 44 "Our fathers had the tent of witness in the wilderness, even as he who spoke to Moses directed him to make it, according to the pattern that he had seen. |
| 45 Il quale ricevuto di mano in mano lo condusser seco i padri nostri con Gesù a prender possesso delle nazioni, le quali andò Dio scacciando dal cospetto dei padri nostri sino ai giorni di Davidde. | 45 Our fathers in turn brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations which God thrust out before our fathers. So it was until the days of David, |
| 46 Il quale trovò grazia davanti a Dio, e pregò di trovare un tabernacolo pel Dio di Giacobbe. | 46 who found favor in the sight of God and asked leave to find a habitation for the God of Jacob. |
| 47 Salomone poi edificò casa per esso. | 47 But it was Solomon who built a house for him. |
| 48 Ma non abita in templi manofatti l'Eccelso, come dice il profeta: | 48 Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made with hands; as the prophet says, |
| 49 Il cielo è mio trono: e la terra sgabello a' miei piedi. Qual sorta di casa mi edificherete, dice il Signore? O qual sarà il luogo del mio riposo? | 49 'Heaven is my throne, and earth my footstool. What house will you build for me, says the Lord, or what is the place of my rest? |
| 50 Non ha ella fatto la mano mia tutte queste cose? | 50 Did not my hand make all these things?' |
| 51 Duri di cervice, e incirconcisi di cuore, e di adito, voi sempre resistete allo Spirito santo, come i padri vostri, così anche voi. | 51 "You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you. |
| 52 Qual de' profeti non perseguitarono i padri vostri? E ucciser coloro, de predicevano la venuta del Giusto, di cui voi siete stati adesso i traditori, e gli omicidi: | 52 Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered, |
| 53 I quali avete ricevuto la legge per ministero degli Angeli, e non l'avete osservata. | 53 you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it." |
| 54 All'udir tali cose si rodevano nei loro cuori, e digrignavano i denti contro di lui. | 54 Now when they heard these things they were enraged, and they ground their teeth against him. |
| 55 Ma egli pieno essendo di Spirito santo, fiso mirando il cielo, vide la gloria di Dio, e Gesù stante alla destra di Dio. E disse: Ecco che io veggo aperti i cieli, e il Figliuolo dell'uomo stante alla destra di Dio. | 55 But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God; |
| 56 Ma quegli alzando le grida, si turaron le orecchie, e tutti riaccordo gli corsero addosso con furia. | 56 and he said, "Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing at the right hand of God." |
| 57 E cacciatolo fuora della città lo lapidavano: e i testimoni posarono le loro vesti ai piedi di un giovanotto chiamato Saulo. | 57 But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and rushed together upon him. |
| 58 E lapidavano Stefano, il quale orava, e diceva: Signore Gesù, ricevi il mio spirito. | 58 Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him; and the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. |
| 59 E piegate le ginocchia, gridò ad alta voce, dicendo: Signore, non imputar loro questa cosa a peccato. E detto questo si addormentò nel Signore. E Saulo era consenziente alla morte di lui. | 59 And as they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." |
| 60 And he knelt down and cried with a loud voice, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." And when he had said this, he fell asleep. |
