| 1 All'Onnipotente i tempi non sono ascosi; ma quelli, che lo conoscono i giorni di lui non conoscono: | 1 "Why are not times of judgment kept by the Almighty, and why do those who know him never see his days? |
| 2 Altri trasportarono i termini, predarono i greggi, e li conducono a pascolare. | 2 Men remove landmarks; they seize flocks and pasture them. |
| 3 Menaron via l'asino dei pupilli, per pegno si presero il bue della vedova. | 3 They drive away the ass of the fatherless; they take the widow's ox for a pledge. |
| 4 Gettaron per terra i disegni de' poverelli, e oppressero tutti i mansueti della terra. | 4 They thrust the poor off the road; the poor of the earth all hide themselves. |
| 5 Altri quasi asini salvatici del deserto se ne vanno al loro lavoro; vigilanti a rubare approntano il pane pe' lor figliuoli. | 5 Behold, like wild asses in the desert they go forth to their toil, seeking prey in the wilderness as food for their children. |
| 6 Mietono il campo altrui, e vendemmian la vigna di quelli, che furon da loro oppressi con violenza. | 6 They gather their fodder in the field and they glean the vineyard of the wicked man. |
| 7 Lasciano ignudi gli uomini, togliendo le vesti a quelli, che non hanno altro per ripararsi dal freddo, | 7 They lie all night naked, without clothing, and have no covering in the cold. |
| 8 I quali restan bagnati dalle piogge dei monti, e non avendo onde coprirsi si rintanano nei massi. | 8 They are wet with the rain of the mountains, and cling to the rock for want of shelter. |
| 9 Depredarono violentemente i pupilli, e spogliarono la turba de' poveri. | 9 (There are those who snatch the fatherless child from the breast, and take in pledge the infant of the poor.) |
| 10 Rubarono delle spighe a gente ignuda, e che sen va senza vestito, e soffre la fame. | 10 They go about naked, without clothing; hungry, they carry the sheaves; |
| 11 Passano il meriggio tralle ammassate robbe di quelli, i quali pigiando le loro uve soffron la sete. | 11 among the olive rows of the wicked they make oil; they tread the wine presses, but suffer thirst. |
| 12 Fecero sospirare gli uomini nelle città, e il sangue degli uccisi gettò le strida; e Dio non lascia tali cose impunite. | 12 From out of the city the dying groan, and the soul of the wounded cries for help; yet God pays no attention to their prayer. |
| 13 Essi furono ribelli alla luce, non conobbero le vie di Dio, né rientrarono nelle sue strade. | 13 "There are those who rebel against the light, who are not acquainted with its ways, and do not stay in its paths. |
| 14 Di gran mattino si alza l'omicida, uccide il meschino, e il povero; e di notte la fa da ladrone. | 14 The murderer rises in the dark, that he may kill the poor and needy; and in the night he is as a thief. |
| 15 L'occhio dell'adultero sta attento al crepuscolo, e dice: Occhio non mi vedrà; e imbacucca il suo capo. | 15 The eye of the adulterer also waits for the twilight, saying, 'No eye will see me'; and he disguises his face. |
| 16 Sforzano al buio le case, come il giorno eran rimasi d'accordo, e odiano, la luce. | 16 In the dark they dig through houses; by day they shut themselves up; they do not know the light. |
| 17 Se repentinamente spunta l'aurora, la credono un'ombra di morte, e cosi vanno di notte, come di giorno. | 17 For deep darkness is morning to all of them; for they are friends with the terrors of deep darkness. |
| 18 Egli è più mobile, che la superficie dell'acqua; maledetta sia sopra la terra la sua eredità, ed ei non passeggi per le sue vigne. | 18 "You say, "They are swiftly carried away upon the face of the waters; their portion is cursed in the land; no treader turns toward their vineyards. |
| 19 Dalle acque di neve passi agli eccessivi calori, e il peccato di lui va sino, all'inferno. | 19 Drought and heat snatch away the snow waters; so does Sheol those who have sinned. |
| 20 Si scordi di lui la misericordia: sua delizia siano i vermi; non se ne faccia memoria, ma egli sia fatto in pezzi, come pianta, che non da frutto. | 20 The squares of the town forget them; their name is no longer remembered; so wickedness is broken like a tree.' |
| 21 Perocché egli ha divorata la sterile, che non fa figliuoli, e non fece del bene alla vedova. | 21 "They feed on the barren childless woman, and do no good to the widow. |
| 22 Ha gettati per terra i forti colla sua possanza; ma quando starà meglio in piedi, non si terrà sicuro della sua vita. | 22 Yet God prolongs the life of the mighty by his power; they rise up when they despair of life. |
| 23 Diegli Dio tempo di penitenza, ed ei ne abusa a divenir più superbo: ma egli tien fissi gli occhi su' suoi andamenti. | 23 He gives them security, and they are supported; and his eyes are upon their ways. |
| 24 Si sono alzati in alto per poco tempo, e non dureranno, e saranno umiliati come tutti gli altri, saran tolti via, e recisi, come i capi delle spighe. | 24 They are exalted a little while, and then are gone; they wither and fade like the mallow; they are cut off like the heads of grain. |
| 25 Che se la bisogna non va così, chi potrà convincermi di menzogna, e accusare le mie parole dinanzi a Dio? | 25 If it is not so, who will prove me a liar, and show that there is nothing in what I say?" |
