| 1 Gioas avea sette anni quando cominciò a regnare: e quarant'anni regnò in Gerusalemme: sua madre avea nome Sebia di Bersabee. | 1 Joash was seven years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem; his mother's name was Zibiah of Beer-sheba. |
| 2 Ed egli fece quello, che era giusto nel cospetto del Signore per tutto il tempo, che visse Joiada Sacerdote. | 2 And Joash did what was right in the eyes of the LORD all the days of Jehoiada the priest. |
| 3 E Joiada gli fece prendere due mogli, dalle quali egli ebbe de' figliuoli, o delle figlie. | 3 Jehoiada got for him two wives, and he had sons and daughters. |
| 4 Indi venne desiderio a Gioas di restaurare la casa del Signore. | 4 After this Joash decided to restore the house of the LORD. |
| 5 E convocò i sacerdoti, e i Leviti e disse loro: Andate attorno per le città di Giuda a raccorre da tutto Israele il denaro per le riparazioni da farsi anno per anno al tempio del vostro Dio, e ciò fate con sollecitudine: ma i Leviti usarono poca diligenza. | 5 And he gathered the priests and the Levites, and said to them, "Go out to the cities of Judah, and gather from all Israel money to repair the house of your God from year to year; and see that you hasten the matter." But the Levites did not hasten it. |
| 6 E il re chiamò Joiada Pontefice, e gli disse: Perchè non hai tu procurato d'indurre i Leviti a portare il denaro di Giuda, e di Gerusalemme secondo che fu stabilito da Mosè servo del Signore, che dovesse tutta la moltitudine d'Israele offerirlo per la erezione del tabernacolo dell'alleanza? | 6 So the king summoned Jehoiada the chief, and said to him, "Why have you not required the Levites to bring in from Judah and Jerusalem the tax levied by Moses, the servant of the LORD, on the congregation of Israel for the tent of testimony?" |
| 7 Imperocché la empia Athalia, e i suoi figliuoli hanno ruinata la casa di Dio, e di tutte le cose consagrate al tempio del Signore hanno ornato il tempio di Baalim. | 7 For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken into the house of God; and had also used all the dedicated things of the house of the LORD for the Baals. |
| 8 Il re adunque comandò, che si facesse una cassa: e la collocarono al di fuori vicino alla porta della casa del Signore. | 8 So the king commanded, and they made a chest, and set it outside the gate of the house of the LORD. |
| 9 E fu intimato per tutto Giuda, e in Gerusalemme, che ciascheduno portasse al Signore il tributo imposto da Mosè servo di Dio sopra tutto Israele nel deserto. | 9 And proclamation was made throughout Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in for the LORD the tax that Moses the servant of God laid upon Israel in the wilderness. |
| 10 E tutti i principi, e il popol tutto ne ebbero piacere: e andarono, e gettarono nell'arca il denaro, a segno che la empierono. | 10 And all the princes and all the people rejoiced and brought their tax and dropped it into the chest until they had finished. |
| 11 E quando era tempo, che l'arca fosse portata per mano de' Leviti dinanzi al re (perocché vedevano, che il denaro era in gran quantità), veniva il segretario del re con un deputato eletto dal sommo Sacerdote, e mettevan fuori il denaro, che era nell'arca: e l'arca la riportavano al suo luogo: e così facevano tutti i giorni, e si raccolse infinito denaro. | 11 And whenever the chest was brought to the king's officers by the Levites, when they saw that there was much money in it, the king's secretary and the officer of the chief priest would come and empty the chest and take it and return it to its place. Thus they did day after day, and collected money in abundance. |
| 12 Il quale fu dal re, e da Joiada dato a quelli, che aveano la soprintendenza ai lavori della casa del Signore: e questi con esso pagavano la mercede degli scarpellini, e degli artefici d'ogni specie per ristorare la casa del Signore: e similmente i lavoratori di ferro, e di bronzo, i quali racconciassero le cose, che avean principiato a patire. | 12 And the king and Jehoiada gave it to those who had charge of the work of the house of the LORD, and they hired masons and carpenters to restore the house of the LORD, and also workers in iron and bronze to repair the house of the LORD. |
| 13 E gli operaj lavorarono con tutta diligenza, e per le mani loro furono chiusi i peli, che facevan le mura, e ritornarono la casa del Signore nel suo antico stato e la rendettero stabile, e salda. | 13 So those who were engaged in the work labored, and the repairing went forward in their hands, and they restored the house of God to its proper condition and strengthened it. |
| 14 E finiti che furono tutti i lavori portarono al re, e a Joiada il denaro che era avanzato: e con esso furon fatti de vasi pel servigio del tempio, e pegli olocausti, e delle coppe, e altri vasi di oro, e di argento: e si offersero gli olocausti continuamente nella casa del Signore per tutto il tempo, che visse Joiada. | 14 And when they had finished, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, and with it were made utensils for the house of the LORD, both for the service and for the burnt offerings, and dishes for incense, and vessels of gold and silver. And they offered burnt offerings in the house of the LORD continually all the days of Jehoiada. |
| 15 Ma Joiada vecchio, e pieno di giorni mori in età di cento trent'anni. | 15 But Jehoiada grew old and full of days, and died; he was a hundred and thirty years old at his death. |
| 16 E fu sepolto nella città di David insieme coi re, perchè egli avea fatto del bene ad Israele, e alla casa di lui. | 16 And they buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, and toward God and his house. |
| 17 Ma dopo la morte di Joiada i principi di Giuda andarono a inchinarsi al re; ed egli ammollito dai loro ossequi fece a modo loro. | 17 Now after the death of Jehoiada the princes of Judah came and did obeisance to the king; then the king hearkened to them. |
| 18 É abbandonarono il tempio del Signore Dio de' padri loro, e rendetter culto ai simolacri, ed ai boschetti: e questo peccato trasse l'ira sopra Giuda, e Gerusalemme. | 18 And they forsook the house of the LORD, the God of their fathers, and served the Asherim and the idols. And wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their guilt. |
| 19 E (Dio) mandava loro de' profeti, affinchè tornassero al Signore; ma quelli non volevano ascoltare le loro intimazioni. | 19 Yet he sent prophets among them to bring them back to the LORD; these testified against them, but they would not give heed. |
| 20 Ma lo Spirito del Signore investì Zacharia figliuolo di Joiada, sacerdote; ed egli si presentò al cospetto del popolo, e disse loro: Queste cose dice il Signore Dio: Per qual motivo trasgredite voi i comandamenti del Signore, lo che non tornerà in bene vostro, e avete abbandonato il Signore, perchè egli ancor vi abbandoni? | 20 Then the Spirit of God took possession of Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest; and he stood above the people, and said to them, "Thus says God, 'Why do you transgress the commandments of the LORD, so that you cannot prosper? Because you have forsaken the LORD, he has forsaken you.'" |
| 21 E quelli ristrettisi insieme contro di lui lo lapidarono secondo l'ordine del re nell'atrio della casa del Signore. | 21 But they conspired against him, and by command of the king they stoned him with stones in the court of the house of the LORD. |
| 22 E il re Gioas non si ricordò dei benefizj fatti a lui da Joiada, ma uccise il suo figliuolo, il quale in morendo disse: Il Signore vegga, e faccia vendetta. | 22 Thus Joash the king did not remember the kindness which Jehoiada, Zechariah's father, had shown him, but killed his son. And when he was dying, he said, "May the LORD see and avenge!" |
| 23 E compito il corso di un anno, l'esercito della Siria si mosse contro Gioas: ed entrò nel paese di Giuda, e in Gerusalemme, e fecero morire tutti i capi del popolo se mandaron tutto il bottino al loro re in Damasco. | 23 At the end of the year the army of the Syrians came up against Joash. They came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all their spoil to the king of Damascus. |
| 24 E veramente essendo venuti i Siri in mediocrissimo numero, il Signore diede nelle mani loro una infinita moltitudine, perchè aveano abbandonato il Signore Dio de' padre loro. E anche Gioas fu strapazzato da quelli obbrobriosamente. | 24 Though the army of the Syrians had come with few men, the LORD delivered into their hand a very great army, because they had forsaken the LORD, the God of their fathers. Thus they executed judgment on Joash. |
| 25 E partendosi lo lasciarono in gravi malori e i suoi servi se gli levaron contro per vendicare il sangue del figliuolo di Joiada, sacerdote; e lo ammazzarono nel suo letto, ed ei morì: e fu sepolto nella città di David, ma non ne' sepolcri dei re. | 25 When they had departed from him, leaving him severely wounded, his servants conspired against him because of the blood of the son of Jehoiada the priest, and slew him on his bed. So he died; and they buried him in the city of David, but they did not bury him in the tombs of the kings. |
| 26 E quelli, che lo tradirono, furono Zabad figliuolo di Semmaath donna ammonita, e Jozabad figliuolo di Semarith donna Moabite. | 26 Those who conspired against him were Zabad the son of Shime-ath the Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith the Moabitess. |
| 27 Quanto ai figliuoli, ch'egli ebbe, e alla somma del denaro messa insieme setto di lui, e al modo, onde fu ristorata la casa di Dio, queste cose sono scritte più minutamente nel libro dei re. Or a lui succedette nel regno Amasia suo figliuolo. | 27 Accounts of his sons, and of the many oracles against him, and of the rebuilding of the house of God are written in the Commentary on the Book of the Kings. And Amaziah his son reigned in his stead. |
