1 But the souls of the just are in the hand of God, and the torment of death shall not touch them.	1 Les âmes des justes sont dans la main de Dieu, et plus aucun tourment ne peut les atteindre.
2 In the sight of the unwise they seemed to die: and their departure was taken for misery:	2 Aux yeux des insensés ils sont bien morts, et leur départ apparaît comme une défaite.
3 And their going away from us, for utter destruction: but they are in peace.	3 Ils nous ont quitté: il semble qu’il n’est rien resté d’eux. En réalité, ils sont entrés dans la paix.
4 And though in the sight of men they suffered torments, their hope is full of immortality.	4 Même si les hommes y ont vu un châtiment, la vie immortelle était là pour soutenir leur espérance:
5 Afflicted in few things, in many they shall be well rewarded: because God hath tried them, and found them worthy of himself.	5 après une courte épreuve ils recevront de grands bienfaits. Oui, Dieu les a mis à l’épreuve et les a trouvés dignes de lui.
6 As gold in the furnace he hath proved them, and as a victim of a holocaust he hath received them, and in time there shall be respect had to them.	6 Il les a éprouvés comme l’or au creuset, il les a agréés comme une offrande parfaite.
7 The just shall shine, and shall run to and fro like sparks among the reeds.	7 Quand Dieu viendra nous visiter, ils seront lumière, semblables à la flamme légère qui court dans les broussailles.
8 They shall judge nations, and rule over people, and their Lord shall reign for ever.	8 Ils gouverneront des nations et domineront sur les peuples, et le Seigneur sera leur roi pour toujours.
9 They that trust in him, shall understand the truth: and they that are faithful in love shall rest in him: for grace and peace is to his elect.	9 Ceux qui ont compté sur lui connaîtront la vérité, ceux qui ont été fidèles resteront auprès de lui dans l’amour; car la grâce et la miséricorde attendent ses élus.
10 But the wicked shall be punished according to their own devices: who have neglected the just, and have revolted from the Lord.	10 Mais les impies qui auront méprisé le juste et renié le Seigneur seront châtiés pour leurs mauvais desseins.
11 For he that rejecteth wisdom, and discipline, is unhappy: and their hope is vain, and their labours without fruit, and their works unprofitable.	11 Oui, malheur à ceux qui rejettent la sagesse et la discipline: pour eux tout espoir est vain, tout effort est inutile, toute œuvre stérile!
12 Their wives are foolish, and their children wicked.	12 Leurs femmes aussi sont stupides et leurs enfants mauvais: il y a une malédiction sur leur descendance.
13 Their offspring is cursed: for happy is the barren: and the undefiled, that hath not known bed in sin: she shall have fruit in the visitation of holy souls.	13 Heureuse la femme sans enfants si elle est restée pure, si elle n’a pas connu d’union coupable; lorsque les âmes seront jugées, on lui verra des fruits.
14 And the eunuch, that hath not wrought iniquity with his hands, nor thought wicked things against God: for the precious gift of faith shall be given to him, and a most acceptable lot in the temple of God.	14 Heureux aussi l’eunuque s’il n’a pas pris part au mal et n’a pas entretenu des pensées de révolte contre le Seigneur: sa fidélité sera bien récompensée, avec une place de choix dans le temple du Seigneur.
15 For the fruit of good labours is glorious, and the root of wisdom never faileth.	15 Car tout effort vers le bien produit des fruits admirables; la vraie connaissance est une racine qui ne dépérit jamais.
16 But the children of adulterers shall not come to perfection, and the seed of the unlawful bed shall be rooted out.	16 Par contre, les enfants nés de l’adultère ne mûrissent pas, la descendance d’une union illégitime disparaît.
17 And if they live long, they shall be nothing regarded, and their last old age shall be without honour.	17 S’il arrive que leur vie se prolonge, ils seront comptés pour rien, et finalement ils vieilliront sans gloire.
18 And if they die quickly, they shall have no hope, nor speech of comfort in the day of trial.	18 Et s’ils meurent jeunes, c’est sans espérance: l’attente du jugement ne saurait les consoler. 19 Oui, une race mauvaise est vouée à un sort cruel.
19 For dreadful are the ends of a wicked race.
