DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Give glory to the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.1 "Give thanks to the LORD who is good, whose love endures forever!"
Let them say so that have been redeemed by the Lord, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy: and gathered out of the countries.2 Let that be the prayer of the LORD'S redeemed, those redeemed from the hand of the foe,
From the rising and the setting of the sun, from the north and from the sea.3 Those gathered from foreign lands, from east and west, from north and south.
They wandered in a wilderness, in a place without water: they found not the way of a city for their habitation.4 Some had lost their way in a barren desert; found no path toward a city to live in.
They were hungry and thirsty: their soul fainted in them.5 They were hungry and thirsty; their life was ebbing away.
And they cried to the Lord in their tribulation: and he delivered them out of their distresses.6 In their distress they cried to the LORD, who rescued them in their peril,
And he led them into the right way: that they might go to a city of habitation.7 Guided them by a direct path so they reached a city to live in.
Let the mercies of the Lord give glory to him: and his wonderful works to the children of men.8 Let them thank the LORD for such kindness, such wondrous deeds for mere mortals.
For he hath satisfied the empty soul, and hath filled the hungry soul with good things.9 For he satisfied the thirsty, filled the hungry with good things.
Such as sat in darkness and in the shadow of death: bound in want and in iron.10 Some lived in darkness and gloom, in prison, bound with chains,
Because they had exasperated the words of God: and provoked the counsel of the most High:11 Because they rebelled against God's word, scorned the counsel of the Most High,
And their heart was humbled with labours: they were weakened, and their was none to help them.12 Who humbled their hearts through hardship; they stumbled with no one to help.
Then they cried to the Lord in their affliction: and he delivered them out of their distresses.13 In their distress they cried to the LORD, who saved them in their peril,
And he brought them out of darkness, and the shadow of death; and broke their bonds in sunder.14 Led them forth from darkness and gloom and broke their chains asunder.
Let the mercies of the Lord give glory to him, and his wonderful works to the children of men.15 Let them thank the LORD for such kindness, such wondrous deeds for mere mortals.
Because he hath broken gates of brass, and burst the iron bars.16 For he broke down the gates of bronze and snapped the bars of iron.
He took them out of the way of their iniquity: for they were brought low for their injustices.17 Some fell sick from their wicked ways, afflicted because of their sins.
Their soul abhorred all manner of meat: and they drew nigh even to the gates of death.18 They loathed all manner of food; they were at the gates of death.
And they cried to the Lord in their affliction: and he delivered them out of their distresses.19 In their distress they cried to the LORD, who saved them in their peril,
He sent his word, and healed them: and delivered them from their destructions.20 Sent forth the word to heal them, snatched them from the grave.
Let the mercies of the Lord give glory to him: and his wonderful works to the children of men.21 Let them thank the LORD for such kindness, such wondrous deeds for mere mortals.
And let them sacrifice the sacrifice of praise: and declare his works with joy.22 Let them offer a sacrifice in thanks, declare his works with shouts of joy.
They that go down to the sea in ships, doing business in the great waters:23 Some went off to sea in ships, plied their trade on the deep waters.
These have seen the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep.24 They saw the works of the LORD, the wonders of God in the deep.
He said the word, and there arose a storm of wind: and the waves thereof were lifted up.25 He spoke and roused a storm wind; it tossed the waves on high.
They mount up to the heavens, and they go down to the depths: their soul pined away with evils.26 They rose up to the heavens, sank to the depths; their hearts trembled at the danger.
They were troubled, and reeled like a drunken man; and all their wisdom was swallowed up.27 They reeled, staggered like drunkards; their skill was of no avail.
And they cried to the Lord in their affliction: and he brought them out of their distresses.28 In their distress they cried to the LORD, who brought them out of their peril,
And he turned the storm into a breeze: and its waves were still.29 Hushed the storm to a murmur; the waves of the sea were stilled.
And they rejoiced because they were still: and he brought them to the haven which they wished for.30 They rejoiced that the sea grew calm, that God brought them to the harbor they longed for.
Let the mercies of the Lord give glory to him, and his wonderful works to the children of men.31 Let them thank the LORD for such kindness, such wondrous deeds for mere mortals.
And let them exalt him in the church of the people: and praise him in the chair of the ancients.32 Let them praise him in the assembly of the people, give thanks in the council of the elders.
He hath turned rivers into a wilderness: and the sources of water into dry ground:33 God changed rivers into desert, springs of water into thirsty ground,
A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein.34 Fruitful land into a salty waste, because of the wickedness of its people.
He hath turned a wilderness into pools of water, and a dry land into water springs.35 He changed the desert into pools of water, arid land into springs of water,
And hath placed there the hungry; and they made a city for their habitation.36 And settled the hungry there; they built a city to live in.
And they sowed fields, and planted vineyards: and they yielded fruit of birth.37 They sowed fields and planted vineyards, brought in an abundant harvest.
And he blessed them, and they were multiplied exceedingly: and their cattle he suffered not to decrease.38 God blessed them, they became very many, and their livestock did not decrease.
Then they were brought to be few: and they were afflicted through the trouble of evils and sorrow.39 Where they were diminished and brought low through misery and cruel oppression,
Contempt was poured forth upon their princes: and he caused them to wander where there was no passing, and out of the way.40 But he poured out contempt on princes, made them wander the trackless wastes,
And he helped the poor out of poverty: and made him families like a flock of sheep.41 While the poor were released from their affliction; their families increased like their flocks.
The just shall see, and shall rejoice, and all iniquity shall stop their mouth.42 The upright saw this and rejoiced; all wickedness shut its mouth.
Who is wise, and will keep these things: and will understand the mercies of the Lord?43 Whoever is wise will take note of these things, will ponder the merciful deeds of the LORD.
