1 Nous avons donc fait demi-tour et nous sommes repartis pour le désert, par la route de la Mer des Joncs, comme Yahvé me l’avait ordonné. Pendant de longs jours nous avons contourné la montagne de Séïr.	1 "When we did turn and proceed into the desert on the Red Sea road, as the LORD had commanded me, we circled around the highlands of Seir for a long time.
2 C’est alors que Yahvé me dit:	2 Finally the LORD said to me,
3 “Vous avez suffisamment tourné autour de cette montagne, repartez vers le nord.	3 'You have wandered round these highlands long enough; turn and go north.
4 Tu donneras cet ordre au peuple: Vous allez arriver à la frontière de vos frères, les fils d’Ésaü qui habitent en Séïr. Ils auront peur de vous, mais faites bien attention:	4 Give this order to the people: You are now about to pass through the territory of your kinsmen, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. Though they are afraid of you, be very careful
5 ne les attaquez pas, car je ne vous donnerai rien de leur pays, pas même la surface de la plante de vos pieds. Car j’ai donné à Ésaü le mont Séïr, il est à lui.	5 not to come in conflict with them, for I will not give you so much as a foot of their land, since I have already given Esau possession of the highlands of Seir.
6 Vous leur achèterez donc la nourriture que vous mangerez; vous paierez même l’eau que vous boirez.	6 You shall purchase from them with silver the food you eat and the well water you drink.
7 Car Yahvé ton Dieu t’a béni dans tout ce que tu as entrepris, il avait prévu ta marche dans ce grand désert; voilà quarante ans que Yahvé ton Dieu est avec toi, et tu n’as manqué de rien.”	7 The LORD, your God, has blessed you in all your undertakings; he has been concerned about your journey through this vast desert. It is now forty years that he has been with you, and you have never been in want.'
8 Nous sommes donc passés à l’écart de nos frères, les fils d’Ésaü qui habitent en Séïr. Nous nous sommes détournés de la route de la Araba, d’Élat et d’Ézyon-Guéber, nous avons tourné et nous sommes passés par la route du désert de Moab.	8 "Then we left behind us the Arabah route, Elath, Ezion-geber, and Seir, where our kinsmen, the descendants of Esau, live; and we went on toward the desert of Moab.
9 Yahvé me dit alors: “N’attaque pas Moab, ne lui livre pas combat, car je ne te donnerai rien de son pays: j’ai donné Ar aux fils de Lot, il leur appartient.”	9 And the LORD said to me, 'Do not show hostility to the Moabites or engage them in battle, for I will not give you possession of any of their land, since I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as their own.
10 (Autrefois ce pays était celui des Émim, peuple grand et nombreux, de haute taille comme les Anakim.	10 (Formerly the Emim lived there, a people strong and numerous and tall like the Anakim;
11 On les comptait parmi les Réphaïm, ainsi que les Anakim, mais les Moabites les appelaient les Émim.	11 like them they were considered Rephaim. It was the Moabites who called them Emim.
12 En Séïr habitaient autrefois les Horites, mais les fils d’Ésaü les avaient dépossédés. Ils les avaient tués et s’étaient installés à leur place, comme Israël allait le faire pour le pays que Yahvé lui donnait en possession.)	12 In Seir, however, the former inhabitants were the Horites; the descendants of Esau dispossessed them, clearing them out of the way and taking their place, just as the Israelites have done in the land of their heritage which the LORD has given them.)
13 “Maintenant donc, traversez le torrent de Zéred.” Nous l’avons traversé.	13 Get ready, then, to cross the Wadi Zered.' So we crossed it.
14 De Qadesh-Barné à la traversée du torrent de Zéred, nous avons marché 38 ans, le temps que disparaisse du milieu du camp toute la génération des hommes de guerre, comme Yahvé l’avait ordonné.	14 Thirty-eight years had elapsed between our departure from Kadesh-barnea and that crossing; in the meantime the whole generation of soldiers had perished from the camp, as the LORD had sworn they should.
15 La main de Yahvé se chargea de les faire disparaître du milieu du camp.	15 For it was the LORD'S hand that was against them, till he wiped them out of the camp completely.
16 Après leur disparition du milieu du peuple,	16 "When at length death had put an end to all the soldiers among the people,
17 Yahvé me dit:	17 the LORD said to me,
18 “Aujourd’hui tu vas passer au-delà d’Ar sur la frontière de Moab.	18 'You are now about to leave Ar and the territory of Moab behind.
19 Tu te trouveras face à face avec les Ammonites, mais ne les attaque pas, ne leur livre pas combat, car je ne te donnerai rien du pays des Ammonites: je l’ai donné aux fils de Lot, il est à eux.	19 As you come opposite the Ammonites, do not show hostility or come in conflict with them, for I will not give you possession of any land of the Ammonites, since I have given it to the descendants of Lot as their own.
20 (Ce pays était considéré comme celui des Réphaïm. Les Réphaïm l’habitaient autrefois et les Ammonites les appelaient Zamzoummim.	20 (This also was considered a country of the Rephaim from its former inhabitants, whom the Ammonites called Zamzummim,
21 C’était un peuple grand et nombreux, de haute taille comme les Anakim. Mais Yahvé les avait exterminés devant les Ammonites qui les dépouillèrent et s’installèrent à leur place.	21 a people strong and numerous and tall like the Anakim. But these, too, the LORD cleared out of the way for the Ammonites, who ousted them and took their place.
22 Il les avait traités de la même façon que les Horites, qui furent exterminés en Séïr par les fils d’Ésaü. Ainsi les Ammonites ont habité à la place des Réphaïm jusqu’à ce jour.	22 He had done the same for the descendants of Esau, who dwell in Seir, by clearing the Horites out of their way, so that the descendants of Esau have taken their place down to the present.
23 En ce temps-là les Avvites aussi habitaient des camps en allant vers Gaza, mais les Kaftorim venus de Kaftor les exterminèrent et s’installèrent à leur place.)	23 So also the Caphtorim, migrating from Caphtor, cleared away the Avvim, who once dwelt in villages as far as Gaza, and took their place.)
24 “Pars maintenant et traverse le torrent d’Arnon. Regarde! J’ai livré entre tes mains Sihon roi de Heshbon, l’Amorite, ainsi que son pays: commence la conquête, engage le combat.	24 "'Advance now across the Wadi Arnon. I now deliver into your hands Sihon, the Amorite king of Heshbon, and his land. Begin the occupation; engage him in battle.
25 À partir d’aujourd’hui je vais répandre la peur devant toi, et tous les peuples sous les cieux seront saisis de crainte devant toi. Ceux qui entendront parler de toi, trembleront et frissonneront de frayeur à cause de toi.”	25 This day I will begin to put a fear and dread of you into every nation under the heavens, so that at the mention of your name they will quake and tremble before you.'
26 Du désert de Kédémot, j’ai fait porter ces paroles de paix à Sihon, roi de Heshbon:	26 "So I sent messengers from the desert of Kedemoth to Sihon, king of Heshbon, with this offer of peace:
27 “Je dois traverser ton pays, j’irai par la grand-route, je ne m’écarterai ni à droite ni à gauche.	27 'Let me pass through your country by the highway; I will go along it without turning aside to the right or to the left.
28 Tu me vendras à prix d’argent la nourriture que je mangerai; tu me vendras même l’eau que je boirai. Laisse-moi seulement traverser à pied.	28 For the food I eat which you will supply, and for the water you give me to drink, you shall be paid in silver. Only let me march through,
29 Agis envers moi comme l’ont fait les fils d’Ésaü qui habitent en Séïr et les Moabites qui habitent à Ar, jusqu’au jour où je traverserai le Jourdain en direction du pays que Yahvé notre Dieu nous donne.”	29 as the descendants of Esau who dwell in Seir and the Moabites who dwell in Ar have done, until I cross the Jordan into the land which the LORD, our God, is about to give us.'
30 Mais Sihon, roi de Heshbon, refusa de nous laisser passer sur ses terres. Yahvé votre Dieu avait endurci son esprit et son cœur, pour le livrer entre vos mains ce jour-là.	30 But Sihon, king of Heshbon, refused to let us pass through his land, because the LORD, your God, made him stubborn in mind and obstinate in heart that he might deliver him up to you, as indeed he has now done.
31 Yahvé me dit alors: “Regarde! J’ai commencé à livrer Sihon et son pays entre tes mains. Ta première conquête sera celle de son pays.”	31 "Then the LORD said to me, 'Now that I have already begun to hand over to you Sihon and his land, begin the actual occupation.'
32 Sihon sortit à notre rencontre à Yahas pour combattre avec tout son peuple,	32 So Sihon and all his people advanced against us to join battle at Jahaz;
33 et Yahvé notre Dieu le livra entre nos mains. Nous l’avons écrasé ainsi que ses fils et tout son peuple.	33 but since the LORD, our God, had delivered him to us, we defeated him and his sons and all his people.
34 À ce moment-là nous avons pris toutes ses villes et nous avons voué à l’anathème chacune de ces villes avec les hommes, les femmes et les petits-enfants. Nous n’avons laissé aucun survivant.	34 At that time we seized all his cities and doomed them all, with their men, women and children; we left no survivor.
35 Nous avons seulement gardé comme butin le bétail et les dépouilles des villes conquises.	35 Our only booty was the livestock and the loot of the captured cities.
36 Depuis Aroër qui se trouve sur le versant de l’Arnon, et la ville qui est dans le torrent jusqu’à Galaad, aucune ville ne nous a échappé: Yahvé notre Dieu a tout livré entre nos mains.	36 From Aroer on the edge of the Wadi Arnon and from the city in the wadi itself, as far as Gilead, no city was too well fortified for us to whom the LORD had delivered them up.
37 Cependant, comme Yahvé notre Dieu nous avait interdit le pays des Ammonites, le versant du torrent du Yabok et les villes de la montagne, nous ne nous en sommes pas approchés.	37 However, in obedience to the command of the LORD, our God, you did not encroach upon any of the Ammonite land, neither the region bordering on the Wadi Jabbok, nor the cities of the highlands.
