1 Tu vas prononcer une lamentation sur les princes d’Israël.	1 'Now, raise a lament for the princes of Israel.
2 Tu diras: Quelle lionne était ta mère au milieu des lions! Elle se couchait entre ses petits et les nourrissait.	2 Say: What was your mother? A lioness among lions; lying among the cubs she nursed her whelps.
3 Elle éleva un de ses petits qui devint un jeune lion, il apprit à déchirer la proie et à dévorer les hommes.	3 She reared one of her whelps: he grew into a young lion; he learnt to tear his prey; he became a man-eater.
4 Mais les nations entendirent parler de lui, il fut capturé dans leur fosse et on le mena en Égypte enchaîné.	4 The nations came to hear of him; he was caught in their pit; they dragged him away with hooks toEgypt.
5 La lionne fut déçue, ses espoirs étaient perdus; elle prit un autre de ses petits dont elle fit un jeune lion.	5 Her expectation thwarted, and seeing her hope dashed, she took another of her whelps and made ayoung lion of him.
6 Comme un jeune lion, il alla avec les lions; il apprit à déchirer la proie et à dévorer les hommes.	6 He prowled among the lions, he grew into a young lion, he learnt to tear his prey; he became a man-eater.
7 Il détruisit leurs palais, il ravagea leurs villes, son rugissement terrorisait le pays et ses habitants.	7 He tore down their palaces, he destroyed their cities; the land and al its inhabitants were appal ed bythe sound of his roars.
8 Des étrangers sont venus l’attaquer de toutes leurs provinces; ils ont tendu sur lui leurs filets, il est tombé dans leur fosse.	8 The nations marched out against him from the surrounding provinces; they spread their net over him;he was caught in their pit.
9 On l’a mis en cage avec des anneaux, on l’a conduit à Babylone ( ) où on l’a fait garder: on n’entendra plus sa voix sur les montagnes d’Israël!	9 They shackled him with hooks, they took him to the king of Babylon and threw him into a fortress, sothat his voice could never again be heard on the mountains of Israel.
10 Ta mère était comme une vigne plantée au bord de l’eau, une vigne fertile et verdoyante car l’eau ne manquait pas.	10 Your mother was like a vine planted beside the water, fruitful and leafy, because the water flowed soful .
11 Elle a même donné une branche assez forte pour faire un sceptre de roi. Elle a grandi jusqu’aux nuages; on admirait sa hauteur et son feuillage bien fourni.	11 She had stout stems which became kingly sceptres; she grew higher and higher, up into the clouds;she was admired for her height and the number of her branches.
12 Mais on l’a arrachée avec colère et jetée à terre, le vent d’est a desséché ses fruits qui sont tombés. La branche vigoureuse s’est desséchée, le feu l’a dévorée.	12 But she was furiously uprooted and thrown on the ground; the east wind dried up her fruit, she wasbroken to pieces; her stout stem dried up, the fire devoured it.
13 La voici maintenant plantée dans une terre aride, au désert.	13 Now she has been transplanted to the desert, to a dry and thirsty land.
14 (Un feu sorti de son tronc a dévoré branches et fruits.) La branche vigoureuse, le sceptre royal, c’est fini pour elle. C’est bien une lamentation, et voilà comment on se lamentera.	14 Fire burst out of her stem devouring her branches and fruit. No more stout stem for her, no morekingly sceptre.' This is a lament; it was used as such.
