1 Laban se leva de bon matin, il embrassa ses fils et ses filles, les bénit et s’en retourna. C’est ainsi que Laban retourna chez lui.	1 Likewise, Jacob continued on the journey that he had begun. And the Angels of God met him.
2 Jacob continua son chemin et les anges de Dieu le rencontrèrent.	2 When he had seen them, he said, “These are the Encampments of God.” And he called the name of that place Mahanaim, that is, ‘Encampments.’
3 Lorsqu’il les vit, Jacob s’écria: “C’est un camp de Dieu!” C’est pourquoi il donna à cet endroit le nom de Double Camp.	3 Then he also sent messengers before him to his brother Esau, in the land of Seir, in the region of Edom.
4 Jacob envoya des messagers devant lui vers son frère Ésaü, à Séïr dans la campagne d’Édom.	4 And he instructed them, saying: “You shall speak in this way to my lord Esau: ‘Your brother Jacob says these things: “I have sojourned with Laban, and I have been with him until the present day.
5 Il leur donna cet ordre: “Vous parlerez ainsi à mon seigneur Ésaü: Voici ce que ton serviteur Jacob te fait dire: J’ai séjourné chez Laban et je m’y suis attardé jusqu’à maintenant.	5 I have oxen, and donkeys, and sheep, and men servants, and women servants. And now I send an ambassador to my lord, so that I may find favor in your sight.” ’ ”
6 J’y ai acquis des bœufs et des ânes, du petit bétail, des serviteurs et des servantes. J’ai donc envoyé mes gens pour te l’annoncer et trouver ainsi grâce à tes yeux.”	6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We went to your brother Esau, and behold, he rushes to meet you with four hundred men.”
7 Les messagers revinrent vers Jacob en disant: “Nous avons rejoint ton frère Ésaü; il marche à ta rencontre avec 400 hommes.”	7 Jacob was very afraid. And in his terror, he divided the people who were with him, likewise the flocks, and the sheep, and the oxen, and the camels, into two companies,
8 Jacob eut alors très peur et il fut saisi d’angoisse. Il partagea en deux camps les gens qui étaient avec lui, ainsi que le petit et le gros bétail; il fit de même pour les chameaux.	8 saying: “If Esau goes to one company, and strikes it, the other company, which is left behind, will be saved.”
9 Car il se disait: “Si Ésaü rejoint un camp et l’attaque, l’autre pourra s’échapper.”	9 And Jacob said: “God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, O Lord who said to me: ‘Return to your land, and to the place of your nativity, and I will do well for you.’
10 Jacob dit alors: “Dieu de mon père Abraham et Dieu de mon père Isaac, ô Yahvé, toi qui m’as dit: Retourne dans ton pays et dans ta patrie et je te ferai du bien,	10 I am less than any of your compassions and your truth, which you have fulfilled to your servant. With my staff I crossed over this Jordan. And now I go back with two companies.
11 je suis trop peu de chose pour mériter toutes tes faveurs et toute la fidélité que tu as montrées à ton serviteur. Je n’avais en effet que ce bâton lorsque j’ai traversé ce Jourdain, et maintenant, j’ai de quoi former deux camps.	11 Rescue me from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am very afraid of him, lest perhaps he may come and strike down the mother with the sons.
12 Délivre-moi de la main de mon frère, de la main d’Ésaü, car j’ai peur qu’il ne vienne et nous frappe, la mère avec les enfants.	12 You did say that you would do well by me, and that you would expand my offspring like the sand of the sea, which, because of its multitude, cannot be numbered.”
13 Or c’est toi qui m’as dit: Je te ferai du bien et je rendrai ta descendance comme le sable de la mer: le nombre en sera tel qu’on ne pourra le compter.”	13 And when he had slept there that night, he separated, from the things that he had, gifts for his brother Esau:
14 Et Jacob passa la nuit en cet endroit. Jacob prit sur ses biens de quoi faire un cadeau à son frère Ésaü:	14 two hundred she-goats, twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,
15 200 chèvres et 20 boucs, 200 brebis et 20 béliers,	15 thirty milking camels with their young, forty cows, and twenty bulls, twenty she-donkeys, and ten of their young.
16 30 chamelles qui allaitaient, avec leurs petits, 40 vaches et 10 taureaux, 20 ânesses et 10 ânons.	16 And he sent them by the hands of his servants, each flock separately, and he said to his servants: “Pass before me, and let there be a space between flock and flock.”
17 Il confia chaque troupeau séparément à l’un de ses serviteurs, puis il leur dit: “Passez devant moi et laissez un espace après chaque troupeau.”	17 And he instructed the first, saying: “If you happen to meet my brother Esau, and he questions you: “Whose are you?” or, “Where are you going?” or, “Whose are these which follow you?”
18 Au premier il donna cet ordre: “Quand mon frère Ésaü te rencontrera, il te posera la question: À qui appartiens-tu et où vas-tu? À qui appartient ce que tu as là?	18 you shall respond: “Your servant Jacob’s. He has sent them as a gift to my lord Esau. And he is also coming after us.”
19 Alors tu répondras: Tout appartient à ton serviteur Jacob. C’est un cadeau qu’il envoie à mon seigneur Ésaü, lui-même arrive derrière nous.”	19 Similarly, he gave orders to the second, and the third, and to all who followed the flocks, saying: “Speak these same words to Esau, when you find him.
20 Il donna également ses instructions au deuxième, puis au troisième, bref, à tous ceux qui accompagnaient les troupeaux. Il leur disait: “Voilà comment vous parlerez à Ésaü quand vous le rencontrerez,	20 And you will add: ‘Your servant Jacob himself also follows after us, for he said: “I will appease him with the gifts that go ahead, and after this, I will see him; perhaps he will be gracious to me.” ’ ”
21 vous lui direz: Ton serviteur Jacob arrive tout de suite derrière nous.” Il pensait en effet: “Le cadeau que j’envoie devant moi l’apaisera et je pourrai alors le regarder en face. Peut-être me fera-t-il bon accueil.”	21 And so the gifts went before him, but he himself lodged that night in the camp.
22 Il envoya donc le cadeau en avant de lui. Quant à lui, il passa cette nuit-là dans le camp.	22 And when he had arisen early, he took his two wives, and the same number of handmaids, with his eleven sons, and he crossed over the ford of Jabbok.
23 Durant la nuit il alla prendre ses deux femmes et ses deux servantes ainsi que les onze enfants pour passer le gué du Yabok.	23 And having delivered over all the things that belonged to him,
24 Après les avoir pris et leur avoir fait passer le torrent, il fit passer tout ce qu’il avait.	24 he remained alone. And behold, a man wrestled with him until morning.
25 Et Jacob resta seul. Quelqu’un lutta avec lui jusqu’au lever du jour.	25 And when he saw that he would not be able to overcome him, he touched the nerve of his thigh, and immediately it withered.
26 Voyant qu’il ne pouvait dominer Jacob, il le toucha à l’articulation de la hanche, et la hanche de Jacob se démit tandis qu’il luttait avec lui.	26 And he said to him, “Release me, for now the dawn ascends.” He responded, “I will not release you, unless you bless me.”
27 L’autre lui dit: “Laisse-moi partir, car le jour se lève.” Mais Jacob répondit: “Je ne te laisserai pas partir avant que tu ne m’aies donné la bénédiction.”	27 Therefore he said, “What is your name?” He answered, “Jacob.”
28 L’autre lui dit: “Quel est ton nom?” Il répondit: “Jacob.”	28 But he said, “Your name will not be called Jacob, but Israel; for if you have been strong against God, how much more will you prevail against men?”
29 L’autre lui dit: “On ne t’appellera plus Jacob, mais Israël, car tu as lutté avec Dieu comme avec les hommes, et tu as eu le dessus.”	29 Jacob questioned him, “Tell me, by what name are you called?” He responded, “Why do you ask my name?” And he blessed him in the same place.
30 Jacob l’interrogea et lui dit: “Révèle-moi ton nom.” Il répondit: “Pourquoi demandes-tu mon nom?” Mais là, il le bénit.	30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, “I have seen God face to face, and my soul has been saved.”
31 Jacob donna à ce lieu le nom de Pénuel car, dit-il: “J’ai vu Dieu face à face et j’ai eu la vie sauve.”	31 And immediately the sun rose upon him, after he had crossed beyond Peniel. Yet in truth, he limped on his foot.
32 Le soleil était déjà haut quand il passa Pénuel, et lui allait, boitant de la hanche.	32 For this reason, the sons of Israel, even to the present day, do not eat the nerve that withered in Jacob’s thigh, because he touched the nerve of his thigh and it was obstructed.
33 C’est pourquoi les fils d’Israël ne mangent pas jusqu’à ce jour le nerf sciatique qui est à l’articulation de la hanche, car c’est à l’articulation de la hanche que Jacob fut touché, au nerf sciatique.
