U to vrijeme kralj Antioh prolazio gornjim krajevima. Dočuo je da je perzijski grad Elimaida na glasu s bogatstva, sa srebra i zlata,1 King Antiochus, meanwhile, was making his way through the Upper Provinces; he had heard that inPersia there was a city called Elymais, renowned for its riches, its silver and gold,
da je ondje bogat hram u kojem se nalaze zlatni predmeti vojne opreme, oklopi i oružje što ih je ostavio Filipov sin Aleksandar Makedonski, koji je prvi vladao nad Grcima.2 and its very wealthy temple containing golden armour, breastplates and weapons, left there byAlexander son of Philip, the king of Macedon, the first to reign over the Greeks.
Zato je krenuo da pokuša zauzeti grad i opljačkati ga, ali nije uspio jer su građani doznali za njegovu nakanu.3 He therefore went and attempted to take the city and pil age it, but without success, the citizens havingbeen forewarned.
Oni mu se opriješe s oružjem u ruci: natjerali su ga u bijeg te se odande morao, jako ojađen, probijati natrag u Babilon.4 They resisted him by force of arms. He was routed, and began retreating, very gloomily, towardsBabylon.
Još dok je bio u Perziji, dođoše i javiše mu kako su poražene čete što su upale u judejsku zemlju.5 But, while he was stil in Persia, news reached him that the armies which had invaded Judaea hadbeen routed,
I Lizija je navro sa snažnom vojskom, ali je pred Židovima morao pobjeći, jer su oni pobijeđenim vojskama uzeli opremu i obilan plijen i tako postali još jači.6 and that Lysias in particular had advanced in massive strength, only to be forced to turn and flee beforethe Jews; that the latter were now stronger than ever, thanks to the arms, supplies and abundant spoils acquiredfrom the armies they had cut to pieces,
Srušili su i sramotni kip što ga bijaše podigao na žrtveniku u Jeruzalemu, a svoje su sveto mjesto okružili visokim zidovima, kakvi su bili i prije, pa tako i Betsur, jedan od njegovih gradova.7 and that they had pul ed down the abomination which he had erected on the altar in Jerusalem, hadencircled the sanctuary with high wal s as in the past, and had fortified Beth-Zur, one of his cities.
Kad je kralj čuo te vijesti, prenerazi se i silno uznemiri; pade na postelju i razbolje se od jada što mu se nije želja ispunila.8 When the king heard this news he was amazed and profoundly shaken; he threw himself on his bedand fel sick with grief, since things had not turned out for him as he had planned.
Ostade tako više dana, ali ga je tuga neprestano presvajala. A kad mu bijaše umrijeti,9 And there he remained for many days, subject to deep and recurrent fits of melancholy, until herealised that he was dying.
dozva sve svoje prijatelje i reče im: »Nestalo je sna s mojih očiju i srce mi je klonulo od jada.10 Then, summoning al his Friends, he said to them, 'Sleep evades my eyes, and my heart is cowed byanxiety.
Zato rekoh u svom srcu: ‘U koliku li sam tjeskobu zapao i kakav li me to val nesreće zapljusnuo! Mene koji sam u vrijeme svoje moći bio poštovan i ljubljen.11 I have been wondering how I could have come to such a pitch of distress, so great a flood as thatwhich now engulfs me -- I who was so generous and wel -loved in my heyday.
But now I recall how wrongly I acted in Jerusalem when I seized al the vessels of silver and goldthere and ordered the extermination of the inhabitants of Judah for no reason at al .
Sad znam da me zbog toga snašlo ovo zlo i da od velike tuge umirem u tuđoj zemlji!’«13 This, I am convinced, is why these misfortunes have overtaken me, and why I am dying of melancholyin a foreign land.'
Nato dozva Filipa, jednog od svojih prijatelja, i postavi ga nad svim kraljevstvom.14 He summoned Philip, one of his Friends, and made him regent of the whole kingdom.
I dade mu svoju krunu, plašt i pečatni prsten, i ostavi mu da odgoji njegova sina Antioha, i da ga uputi u vođenje kraljevstva.15 He entrusted him with his diadem, his robe and his signet, on the understanding that he was toeducate his son Antiochus and train him for the throne.
Tu kralj Antioh umrije godine sto četrdeset i devete.16 King Antiochus then died, in the year 149.
Kad je Lizija doznao da je kralj umro, postavio mu je za nasljednika njegova sina Antioha, koga je odgajao od njegova djetinjstva. Nadjenuo mu je ime Eupator.17 Lysias, learning that the king was dead, established on the throne in succession to him his sonAntiochus, whom he had brought up from childhood -- and styled him Eupator.
Ali oni koji su bili u Tvrđi uznemiravahu Izraelce oko Svetišta, neprestano smišljajući kako da im naude i tako pomognu poganima.18 The people in the Citadel at the time were blockading Israel round the sanctuary and were takingevery opportunity to harm them and to support the gentiles.
Juda odluči da ih uništi. Zato sazva sav narod na opsadu.19 Judas decided that they must be destroyed, and he mobilised the whole people to besiege them.
Sabrali su se i opkolili ih godine sto pedesete. Načinili su strelišta i bojne naprave.20 They assembled and laid siege to the Citadel in the year 150, building batteries and siege-engines.
Ali su neki od opkoljenih probili obruč, a njima se pridružili i neki od bezbožnih Izraelaca.21 But some of the besieged broke through the blockade, and to these a number of renegades fromIsrael attached themselves.
Otišli su kralju i rekli mu: »Dokle ćeš oklijevati da nam izvršiš pravdu i osvetiš našu braću?22 They made their way to the king and said, 'How much longer are you going to wait before you seejustice done and avenge our fellows?
Dobre volje pristali smo da služimo tvome ocu i vladamo se prema njegovim nalozima i držimo se njegovih odredaba.23 We were content to serve your father, to comply with his orders, and to obey his edicts.
Zato sinovi našeg naroda opsjedaju Tvrđu i zamrziše na nas. I poubijali su sve koji su im dopali šaka i razgrabili su nam baštinu.24 As a result our own people will have nothing to do with us; what is more, they have kil ed al those ofus they could catch, and looted our family property.
I nisu samo na nas podigli ruke: podigli su ih i na sve tvoje krajeve.25 Nor is it on us alone that their blows have fal en, but on al your territories.
Evo, sad opsjedaju jeruzalemsku Tvrđu: hoće da je zauzmu, a utvrdili su Svetište i Betsur.26 At this moment, they are laying siege to the Citadel of Jerusalem, to capture it, and they have fortifiedthe sanctuary and Beth-Zur.
Ako im se ne ispriječiš, učinit će još i više, a ti ih više nećeš zaustaviti.«27 Unless you forestall them at once, they wil go on to even bigger things, and then you wil never beable to control them.'
Na te se riječi kralj razgnjevi. Sabra sve svoje prijatelje, starješine svojih pješaka i zapovjednike konjanika.28 The king was furious when he heard this and summoned al his Friends, the generals of his forcesand the marshals of horse.
Došle su mu i najamničke čete drugih kraljevina i od morskih otoka.29 He recruited mercenaries from other kingdoms and the Mediterranean islands.
Broj se njegovih snaga podigao na sto tisuća pješaka i dvadeset tisuća konjanika i trideset i dva slona uvježbana za rat.30 His forces numbered a hundred thousand foot soldiers, twenty thousand cavalry and thirty-twoelephants with experience of battle conditions.
Došli su preko Idumeje i opsjeli Betsur, dugo ga tukli i čak napravili bojne naprave. Ali su oni iz grada provaljivali, palili naprave i hrabro se borili.31 They advanced through Idumaea and besieged Beth-Zur, pressing the attack for days on end; theyalso constructed siege-engines, but the defenders made a sortie and set these on fire, putting up a braveresistance.
Tada se Juda, prekinuvši opsadu Tvrđe, utabori kod Bet Zaharije, nasuprot kraljevskom taboru.32 At this, Judas left the Citadel and pitched camp at Beth-Zechariah opposite the royal encampment.
Kralj ustade u ranu zoru i požuri se sa svojom vojskom prema Bet Zahariji. Njegove su čete zauzele borbene položaje, a trube zatrubile.33 The king rose at daybreak and marched his army at top speed down the road to Beth-Zechariah,where his forces took up their battle formations and sounded the trumpets.
Slonovima su davali grožđani i dudov sok da ih potaknu za boj.34 The elephants were given a syrup of grapes and mulberries to prepare them for the battle.
Životinje su razmjestili među bojne redove. Uza svakog slona poredali su tisuću pješaka opremljenih lančanim oklopima i brončanim šljemovima, a k tomu su svakoj životinji pridijelili i pet stotina odabranih konjanika.35 These animals were distributed among the phalanxes, to each elephant being al ocated a thousandmen dressed in coats of mail with bronze helmets on their heads; five hundred picked horsemen were alsoassigned to each beast.
Ti su upravljali svim pokretima životinje, pratili je svuda i od nje se nisu udaljivali.36 The horsemen anticipated every move their elephant made; wherever it went they went with it, neverquitting it.
Na svakog slona privezali su potpruzima jaku drvenu obrambenu kulu. U svakoj su, uz Indijca, bila četiri snažna ratnika.37 On each elephant, to protect it, was a stout wooden tower, kept in position by girths, each with itsthree combatants, as well as its mahout.
Ostale je konjanike kralj razmjestio na oba krila vojske da uznemiruju neprijatelje i pokrivaju bojne redove.38 The remainder of the cavalry was stationed on one or other of the two flanks of the army, to harassthe enemy and cover the phalanxes.
Kad je sunce obasjalo zlatne i mjedene štitove, zablistale su od njih gore i zasvijetlile poput upaljenih zublja.39 When the sun glinted on the bronze and golden shields, the mountains caught the glint and gleamedlike fiery torches.
Jedan se dio kraljevskih četa razvi po gorskim visovima, a drugi po nizinama i svi se pokrenuše u čvrstom i uređenom rasporedu.40 One part of the royal army was deployed on the upper slopes of the mountain and the other in theval ey below; they advanced in solid, wel -disciplined formation.
Uzdrhtaše svi koji su čuli graju toga mnoštva, bât njegovih stopala i zveket oružja, jer ta je vojska bila vrlo velika i jaka.41 Everyone trembled at the noise made by this vast multitude, the thunder of the troops on the marchand the clanking of their armour, for it was an immense and mighty army.
Juda se sa svojom vojskom upusti u boj. U kraljevskoj vojsci pade šest stotina ljudi.42 Judas and his army advanced to give battle, and six hundred of the king's army were killed.
Uto je Eleazar, zvan Auran, opazio jednu životinju opremljenu kraljevskom ormom, višu od ostalih. Pomisli da je u njoj kralj43 Eleazar, cal ed Avaran, noticing that one of the elephants was royal y caparisoned and was also tal erthan al the others, and supposing that the king was mounted on it,
i žrtvova se da izbavi svoj narod i steče vječno ime.44 sacrificed himself to save his people and win an imperishable name.
Hrabro potrča prema životinji, posred bojnog reda. Ubijao je desno i lijevo, a neprijatelji se pred njim razdvojili.45 Boldly charging towards the creature through the thick of the phalanx, dealing death to right and left,so that the enemy scattered on either side at his onslaught,
Uvuče se pod slona, probode ga mačem i ubi. Životinja se strovali na Eleazara i zgnječi ga. Tako on pogibe ondje.46 he darted in under the elephant, thrust at it from underneath, and kil ed it. The beast collapsed on topof him, and he died on the spot.
Židovi su, videći silnu kraljevsku snagu i žestoku vojsku, pred njom uzmaknuli.47 The Jews however realising how strong the king was and how ferocious his army, retreated ahead ofthem.
Kraljevska vojska krenu protiv Židova u Jeruzalemu. Kralj je opsjedao Judeju i goru Sion,48 The royal army moved up to encounter them outside Jerusalem, and the king began to blockadeJudaea and Mount Zion.
a s onima u Betsuru sklopio je mir. Ti su izišli iz grada jer više nisu mogli izdržati opsadu: nisu imali hrane. Bila je, naime, subotnja godina, zemlja je počivala.49 He granted peace terms to the people of Beth-Zur, who evacuated the town; it lacked store ofprovisions to withstand a siege, since the land was enjoying a sabbatical year.
Kralj je zaposjeo Betsur i ondje smjestio posadu.50 Having occupied Beth-Zur, the king stationed a garrison there to hold it.
Prilično je dugo opsjedao Svetište. Služio se protiv njega strelištima, bojnim napravama, bacačima plamena, kamenja i strelica, a tako i praćarama.51 He besieged the sanctuary for a long time, erecting batteries and siege-engines, flame-throwers andballistas, scorpions to discharge arrows, and catapults.
I opsjednuti uzimahu naprave protiv napadača. Borba potraja dugo.52 The defenders countered these by constructing their own engines and were thus able to prolong theirresistance.
Ali u skladištima nestalo hrane. Bila je sedma godina, a, osim toga, Izraelci dovedeni u Judeju iz poganskih krajeva bijahu potrošili i posljednje zalihe.53 But they had no food in their stores since it was the seventh year, and because those who had takenrefuge in Judaea from the gentiles had eaten up the last of their reserves.
Tako su u Svetištu ostavili malo ljudi jer je zavladala glad. Ostali se raspršili svaki na svoju stranu.54 Only a few men were left in the Holy Place, owing to the severity of the famine; the rest had dispersed and gone home.
Sad je nastojao da zagospoduje državnim poslovima.56 had returned from Persia and Media with the forces that had accompanied the king, and was planningto seize control of affairs.
Na tu vijest Lizija je samo gledao da što prije ode. Rekao je kralju, vojskovođama i ljudima: »Svaki smo dan slabiji, imamo sve manje hrane, a mjesto koje opsjedamo dobro je utvrđeno. Osim toga, čekaju nas poslovi kraljevstva.57 On hearing this, Lysias at once decided to leave, and said to the king, the generals of the army andthe men, 'We are growing weaker every day, we are short of food, and the place we are besieging is welfortified; moreover the affairs of the kingdom demand our attention.
Pružimo, dakle, desnicu tim ljudima, sklopimo mir s njima i sa svim njihovim narodom.58 Let us offer the hand of friendship to these men and make peace with them and with their wholenation.
Dopustimo im da žive po svojim običajima kao i prije, jer su se radi svojih zakona, kad smo ih dokinuli, na nas razgnjevili i sve ovo počinili.«59 Let us grant them permission to fol ow their own customs as before, since it is our abolition of thesecustoms that has provoked them into acting like this.'
Taj je prijedlog kralju i starješinama bio po volji. Po poslanicima ponudio je Židovima mir, a oni ga prihvatiše.60 The king and his commanders approved this argument, and he offered the Jews peace terms, whichthey accepted.
Kralj i starješine potkrijepiše sporazum zakletvom, pa su opsjednuti izišli iz Tvrđe.61 The king and the generals ratified the treaty by oath, and the besieged accordingly left the fortress.
Potom kralj uziđe na goru Sion. Tu vidje kako je mjesto utvrđeno, pogazi svoju zakletvu i zapovjedi da se ono poruši.62 The king then entered Mount Zion, but on seeing how impregnable the place was, he broke the oathhe had sworn and gave orders for the encircling wall to be demolished.
Nato hitno podiže tabor i vrati se u Antiohiju. Tu nađe Filipa gospodarem grada. Udari na grad i silom ga osvoji.63 He then hurriedly withdrew, making off for Antioch, where he found Philip already master of the city.Antiochus gave battle and captured the city by force of arms.
