| 1 Partiti poi da quel luogo, venimmo nel deserto che mena al Mar Rosso, come mi aveva dotto il Signore; e girammo per lungo tempo attorno ai monti di Seir. | 1 "Then we turned, and journeyed into the wilderness in the direction of the Red Sea, as the LORD told me; and for many days we went about Mount Seir. |
| 2 E il Signore mi disse: | 2 Then the LORD said to me, |
| 3 Avete girato abbastanza attorno a questi monti: andate verso settentrione, | 3 'You have been going about this mountain country long enough; turn northward. |
| 4 e tu dà al popolo quest'ordine: Voi passerete pel territorio dei vostri fratelli, i figli d'Esaù che abitano in Seir. Essi avran paura di voi; | 4 And command the people, You are about to pass through the territory of your brethren the sons of Esau, who live in Seir; and they will be afraid of you. So take good heed; |
| 5 ma guardatevi bene dal muovere contro di loro; perchè della terra loro non ve ne darò nemmeno quanto può calcarne un piede: i monti di Seir li ho dati in possesso ad Esaù. | 5 do not contend with them; for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on, because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession. |
| 6 Da essi compre rete a contanti il cibo che mangerete e pagherete pure l'acqua attinta per bere. | 6 You shall purchase food from them for money, that you may eat; and you shall also buy water of them for money, that you may drink. |
| 7 Il Signore Dio tuo ti ha benedetto in tutte le opere, delle tue mani; ha avuto cura del tuo viaggio e del come farti attraversare questo gran deserto: durante quarantanni il Signore Dio tuo ha abitato con te e non ti è mancato nulla. | 7 For the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands; he knows your going through this great wilderness; these forty years the LORD your God has been with you; you have lacked nothing.' |
| 8 Poi, oltrepassati i nostri fratelli, i figli d'Esaù, che abitavano in Seir, per la via della pianura, da Elat e, da Asion-gaber, giungemmo alla strada che conduce al deserto di Moab. | 8 So we went on, away from our brethren the sons of Esau who live in Seir, away from the Arabah road from Elath and Ezion-geber. "And we turned and went in the direction of the wilderness of Moab. |
| 9 E il Signore mi disse: Non muovere contro i Moabiti, non attaccar battaglia con essi; perchè non ti darò nulla della loro terra, avendo io dato Ar ai figli di Lot in possesso. | 9 And the LORD said to me, 'Do not harass Moab or contend with them in battle, for I will not give you any of their land for a possession, because I have given Ar to the sons of Lot for a possession.' |
| 10 I primi suoi abitatori furono gli Emim, popolo grande e forte, e di tale statura da esser creduto della stirpe di Enacim, | 10 (The Emim formerly lived there, a people great and many, and tall as the Anakim; |
| 11 quasi somigliando ai giganti figli d'Enacim. Ma i Moabiti li chiamavano Emim. | 11 like the Anakim they are also known as Rephaim, but the Moabites call them Emim. |
| 12 Così in Seir abitarono prima gli Oriti; ma furon cacciati e distrutti dai figli d'Esaù, che vi abitarono, come ha fatto Israele nella terra di suo possesso che il Signore gli ha dato. | 12 The Horites also lived in Seir formerly, but the sons of Esau dispossessed them, and destroyed them from before them, and settled in their stead; as Israel did to the land of their possession, which the LORD gave to them.) |
| 13 Ci movemmo adunque per passare il torrente Zared e giungemmo presso di esso. | 13 'Now rise up, and go over the brook Zered.' So we went over the brook Zered. |
| 14 Or il tempo che impiegammo da Cadesbarne al passaggio del torrente Zared fu di trentotto anni, finche non fu sterminata dal campo tutta quella generazione di uomini combattenti, come aveva giurato il Signore, | 14 And the time from our leaving Kadesh-barnea until we crossed the brook Zered was thirty-eight years, until the entire generation, that is, the men of war, had perished from the camp, as the LORD had sworn to them. |
| 15 la cui mano fu contro di essi e li fece perire di mezzo al campo. | 15 For indeed the hand of the LORD was against them, to destroy them from the camp, until they had perished. |
| 16 Caduti che furon tutti quei combattenti, | 16 "So when all the men of war had perished and were dead from among the people, |
| 17 il Signore mi parlò e mi disse: | 17 the LORD said to me, |
| 18 Oggi tu passerai i confini di Moab, la città di Ar, | 18 'This day you are to pass over the boundary of Moab at Ar; |
| 19 e ti avvicinerai ai figli di Ammon. Ma guardati dal combattere contro di loro e dall'assalirli; perchè non ti darò nulla della terra dei figli di Amon, avendola io data ai figli di Lot in possesso. | 19 and when you approach the frontier of the sons of Ammon, do not harass them or contend with them, for I will not give you any of the land of the sons of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to the sons of Lot for a possession.' |
| 20 ( Questa fu riputata terra di giganti; e una volta vi abitarono dei giganti che gli Ammoniti chiamano Zonzommin, | 20 (That also is known as a land of Rephaim; Rephaim formerly lived there, but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim, |
| 21 popolo grande, numeroso e di alta statura, come gli Enacim; ma il Signore li sterminò dinanzi agli Ammoniti, e vi fece abitare questi in luogo di quelli, | 21 a people great and many, and tall as the Anakim; but the LORD destroyed them before them; and they dispossessed them, and settled in their stead; |
| 22 come aveva fatto per i figli d'Esaù che abitano in Seir, distruggendo gli Oriti e dandone la terra a quelli, che la posseggono sino al dì d'oggi. | 22 as he did for the sons of Esau, who live in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites before them, and they dispossessed them, and settled in their stead even to this day. |
| 23 Così pure gli Evei che abitavano in Aserim fino a Gaza, furon cacciati dai Cappadoci, che, usciti dalla Cappadocia, li sterminarono e vi abitarono in loro luogo). | 23 As for the Avvim, who lived in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorim, who came from Caphtor, destroyed them and settled in their stead.) |
| 24 Levatevi e passate il torrente Arnon: ecco ti ho dato nelle mani Sehon l'Amorreo, re di Esebon, e la sua terra comincia a prenderne possesso e muovigli guerra. | 24 'Rise up, take your journey, and go over the valley of the Arnon; behold, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land; begin to take possession, and contend with him in battle. |
| 25 Oggi comincerò a mandare il terrore e lo spavento sopra i popoli che abitano sotto ogni parte del cielo, sicché a sentire il tuo nome sian terrorizzati e tremino e sian presi da dolore: a guisa di donne partorienti. | 25 This day I will begin to put the dread and fear of you upon the peoples that are under the whole heaven, who shall hear the report of you and shall tremble and be in anguish because of you.' |
| 26 Allora mandai dal deserto di Cademot ambasciatori a Sehon re di Esebon, con parole di pace, dicendo: | 26 "So I sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon the king of Heshbon, with words of peace, saying, |
| 27 Noi, passando per il tuo paese, cammineremo per la via maestra, senza volgerci a destra o a sinistra: | 27 'Let me pass through your land; I will go only by the road, I will turn aside neither to the right nor to the left. |
| 28 vendici pure a prezzo la roba che mangeremo, e facci pagare l'acqua che berremo, ma permettici di passare | 28 You shall sell me food for money, that I may eat, and give me water for money, that I may drink; only let me pass through on foot, |
| 29 (come han fatto i figli di Esaù che abitano in Seir, e i Moabiti che stanno in Ar), finché non arriviamo al Giordano, per passar poi nella terra che il Signore Dio nostro sta per darci. | 29 as the sons of Esau who live in Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for me, until I go over the Jordan into the land which the LORD our God gives to us.' |
| 30 Ma Sehon re di Esebon non ci volle lasciar passare, perchè il Signore Dio tuo gli aveva indurito lo spirito ed ostinato il cuore, per dartelo nelle mani, come oggi vedi. | 30 But Sihon the king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him; for the LORD your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that he might give him into your hand, as at this day. |
| 31 E il Signore mi disse: Ecco, ho cominciato a darti Sehon e il suo paese: comincia a possederlo. | 31 And the LORD said to me, 'Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land over to you; begin to take possession, that you may occupy his land.' |
| 32 Allora Sehon con tutta la sua gente uscì contro di noi per darci battaglia a Iasa; | 32 Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Jahaz. |
| 33 ma il Signore nostro Dio ce lo diede nelle mani e lo ponemmo in rotta coi suoi figli e con tutta la sua gente. | 33 And the LORD our God gave him over to us; and we defeated him and his sons and all his people. |
| 34 In quel tempo prendemmo tutte le città, uccidendone gli abitanti, uomini, donne e fanciulli, tutto distruggemmo, | 34 And we captured all his cities at that time and utterly destroyed every city, men, women, and children; we left none remaining; |
| 35 eccettuati i bestiami, che toccarono ai predatori, e le spoglie delle città, che furon prese. | 35 only the cattle we took as spoil for ourselves, with the booty of the cities which we captured. |
| 36 Da Aroer che è sulla riva del torrente Arnon, dalla città situata nella valle, fino a Galaad non ci fu borgo o città che sia sfuggita dalle nostre mani: il Signore Dio nostro le diè tutte in nostro potere, | 36 From Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and from the city that is in the valley, as far as Gilead, there was not a city too high for us; the LORD our God gave all into our hands. |
| 37 eccettuata la terra dei figli di Ammon, alla quale non ci accostammo, e tutta la regione lungo il torrente Ieboc, e le città della montagna, e tutti i luoghi dai quali ci aveva distolti il Signore. | 37 Only to the land of the sons of Ammon you did not draw near, that is, to all the banks of the river Jabbok and the cities of the hill country, and wherever the LORD our God forbade us. |
