CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINGREEK BIBLE
And departing from there, he went away to his own country; and his disciples followed him.1 Και εξηλθεν εκειθεν και ηλθεν εις την πατριδα αυτου?
And when the Sabbath arrived, he began to teach in the synagogue. And many, upon hearing him, were amazed at his doctrine, saying: “Where did this one get all these things?” and, “What is this wisdom, which has been given to him?” and, “Such powerful deeds, which are wrought by his hands!”2 Και οτε ηλθε το σαββατον, ηρχισε να διδασκη εν τη συναγωγη? και πολλοι ακουοντες εξεπληττοντο και ελεγον? Ποθεν εις τουτον ταυτα; και τις η σοφια η δοθεισα εις αυτον, ωστε και θαυματα τοιαυτα γινονται δια των χειρων αυτου;
“Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joseph, and Jude, and Simon? Are not his sisters also here with us?” And they took great offense at him.3 δεν ειναι ουτος ο τεκτων, ο υιος της Μαριας, αδελφος δε του Ιακωβου και Ιωση και Ιουδα και Σιμωνος; και δεν ειναι αι αδελφαι αυτου ενταυθα παρ' ημιν; Και εσκανδαλιζοντο εν αυτω.
And Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and in his own house, and among his own kindred.”4 Ελεγε δε προς αυτους ο Ιησους οτι δεν ειναι προφητης ανευ τιμης ειμη εν τη πατριδι αυτου και μεταξυ των συγγενων και εν τη οικια αυτου.
And he was not able to perform any miracles there, except that he cured a few of the infirm by laying his hands on them.5 Και δεν ηδυνατο εκει ουδεν θαυμα να καμη, ειμη οτι επι ολιγους αρρωστους επιθεσας τας χειρας εθεραπευσεν αυτους?
And he wondered, because of their unbelief, and he traveled around in the villages, teaching.6 και εθαυμαζε δια την απιστιαν αυτων.
And he called the twelve. And he began to send them out in twos, and he gave them authority over unclean spirits.7 Και προσκαλεσας τους δωδεκα, ηρχισε να αποστελλη αυτους δυο δυο?
And he instructed them not to take anything for the journey, except a staff: no traveling bag, no bread, and no money belt,8 και παρηγγειλεν εις αυτους να μη βασταζωσι μηδεν εις την οδον ειμη ραβδον μονον, μη σακκιον, μη αρτον, μη χαλκον εις την ζωνην,
but to wear sandals, and not to wear two tunics.9 αλλα να ηναι υποδεδεμενοι σανδαλια και να μη ενδυωνται δυο χιτωνας.
And he said to them: “Whenever you have entered into a house, stay there until you depart from that place.10 Και ελεγε προς αυτους? Οπου εαν εισελθητε εις οικιαν, εκει μενετε εωσου εξελθητε εκειθεν.
And whoever will neither receive you, nor listen to you, as you go away from there, shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.”11 Και οσοι δεν σας δεχθωσι μηδε σας ακουσωσιν, εξερχομενοι εκειθεν εκτιναξατε τον κονιορτον τον υποκατω των ποδων σας δια μαρτυριαν εις αυτους.
And going out, they were preaching, so that people would repent.12 Και εξελθοντες εκηρυττον να μετανοησωσι,
And they cast out many demons, and they anointed many of the sick with oil and healed them.13 και εξεβαλλον πολλα δαιμονια και ηλειφον πολλους αρρωστους με ελαιον και εθεραπευον.
And king Herod heard of it, (for his name had become well-known) and he said: “John the Baptist has risen again from the dead, and because of this, miracles are at work in him.”14 Και ηκουσεν ο βασιλευς Ηρωδης?
But others were saying, “Because it is Elijah.” Still others were saying, “Because he is a prophet, like one of the prophets.”15 Αλλοι ελεγον οτι ο Ηλιας ειναι?
When Herod had heard it, he said, “John whom I beheaded, the same has risen again from the dead.”16 Ακουσας δε ο Ηρωδης ειπεν οτι ουτος ειναι ο Ιωαννης, τον οποιον εγω απεκεφαλισα?
For Herod himself had sent to capture John, and had chained him in prison, because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip; for he had married her.17 Διοτι αυτος ο Ηρωδης απεστειλε και επιασε τον Ιωαννην και εδεσεν αυτον εν τη φυλακη δια την Ηρωδιαδα την γυναικα Φιλιππου του αδελφου αυτου, επειδη ειχε λαβει αυτην εις γυναικα.
For John was saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”18 Διοτι ο Ιωαννης ελεγε προς τον Ηρωδην οτι δεν σοι ειναι συγκεχωρημενον να εχης την γυναικα του αδελφου σου.
Now Herodias was devising treachery against him; and she wanted to kill him, but she was unable.19 Η δε Ηρωδιας εμισει αυτον και ηθελε να θανατωση αυτον, και δεν ηδυνατο.
For Herod was apprehensive of John, knowing him to be a just and holy man, and so he guarded him. And he heard that he was accomplishing many things, and so he listened to him willingly.20 Διοτι ο Ηρωδης εφοβειτο τον Ιωαννην, γνωριζων αυτον ανδρα δικαιον και αγιον, και διεφυλαττεν αυτον και εκαμνε πολλα ακουων αυτου και ευχαριστως ηκουεν αυτου.
And when an opportune time had arrived, Herod held a feast on his birthday, with the leaders, and the tribunes, and the first rulers of Galilee.21 Και οτε ηλθεν αρμοδιος ημερα, καθ' ην ο Ηρωδης εκαμνεν εν τοις γενεθλιοις αυτου δειπνος εις τους μεγιστανας αυτου και εις τους χιλιαρχους και τους πρωτους της Γαλιλαιας,
And when the daughter of the same Herodias had entered, and danced, and pleased Herod, along with those who were at table with him, the king said to the girl, “Request from me whatever you want, and I will give it to you.”22 και εισηλθεν η θυγατηρ αυτης της Ηρωδιαδος και εχορευσε και ηρεσεν εις τον Ηρωδην και τους συγκαθημενους, ειπεν ο βασιλευς προς το κορασιον?
And he swore to her, “Anything that you request, I will give to you, even up to half my kingdom.”23 Και ωμοσε προς αυτην οτι θελω σοι δωσει ο, τι με ζητησης, εως του ημισεος της βασιλειας μου.
And when she had gone out, she said to her mother, “What shall I request?” But her mother said, “The head of John the Baptist.”24 Η δε εξελθουσα ειπε προς την μητερα αυτης?
And immediately, when she had entered with haste to the king, she petitioned him, saying: “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”25 Και ευθυς εισελθουσα μετα σπουδης εις τον βασιλεα, εζητησε λεγουσα?
And the king was greatly saddened. But because of his oath, and because of those who were sitting with him at table, he was not willing to disappoint her.26 Και ο βασιλευς, αν και ελυπηθη πολυ, δια τους ορκους ομως και τους συγκαθημενους δεν ηθελησε να απορριψη την αιτησιν αυτης.
So, having sent an executioner, he instructed that his head be brought on a platter.27 Και ευθυς αποστειλας ο βασιλευς δημιον, προσεταξε να φερθη η κεφαλη αυτου.
And he beheaded him in prison, and he brought his head on a platter. And he gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it her mother.28 και εφερε την κεφαλην αυτου επι πινακι και εδωκεν αυτην εις το κορασιον, και το κορασιον εδωκεν αυτην εις την μητερα αυτης.
When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body, and they placed it in a tomb.29 Και ακουσαντες οι μαθηται αυτου, ηλθον και εσηκωσαν το πτωμα αυτου και εθεσαν αυτο εν μνημειω.
And the Apostles, returning to Jesus, reported to him everything that they had done and taught.30 Και συναγονται οι αποστολοι προς τον Ιησουν και απηγγειλαν προς αυτον παντα, και οσα επραξαν και οσα εδιδαξαν.
And he said to them, “Go out alone, into a deserted place, and rest for a little while.” For there were so many who were coming and going, that they did not even have time to eat.31 Και ειπε προς αυτους?
And climbing into a boat, they went away to a deserted place alone.32 και υπηγον εις ερημον τοπον με το πλοιον κατ' ιδιαν.
And they saw them going away, and many knew about it. And together they ran by foot from all the cities, and they arrived before them.33 Και ειδον αυτους υπαγοντας οι οχλοι, και πολλοι εγνωρισαν αυτον και συνεδραμον εκει πεζοι απο πασων των πολεων και φθασαντες προ αυτων συνηχθησαν πλησιον αυτου.
And Jesus, going out, saw a great multitude. And he took pity on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd, and he began to teach them many things.34 Εξελθων δε ο Ιησους, ειδε πολυν οχλον και εσπλαγχνισθη δι' αυτους, επειδη ησαν ως προβατα μη εχοντα ποιμενα, και ηρχισε να διδασκη αυτους πολλα.
And when many hours had now passed, his disciples drew near to him, saying: “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late.35 Και επειδη ειχεν ηδη παρελθει ωρα πολλη, προσελθοντες προς αυτον οι μαθηται αυτου, λεγουσιν οτι ερημος ειναι ο τοπος και παρηλθεν ηδη πολλη ωρα?
Send them away, so that by going out to nearby villages and towns, they might buy provisions for themselves to eat.”36 απολυσον αυτους, δια να υπαγωσιν εις τους περιξ αγρους και κωμας και αγορασωσιν εις εαυτους αρτους?
And responding, he said to them, “Give them something to eat yourselves.” And they said to him, “Let us go out and buy bread for two hundred denarii, and then we will give them something to eat.”37 Ο δε αποκριθεις ειπε προς αυτους? Δοτε σεις εις αυτους να φαγωσι. Και λεγουσι προς αυτον? να υπαγωμεν να αγορασωμεν διακοσιων δηναριων αρτους και να δωσωμεν εις αυτους να φαγωσιν;
And he said to them: “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.”38 Ο δε λεγει προς αυτους?
And he instructed them to make them all sit down in groups on the green grass.39 Και προσεταξεν αυτους να καθισωσι παντας επι του χλωρου χορτου συμποσια συμποσια.
And they sat down in divisions by hundreds and by fifties.40 Και εκαθησαν πρασιαι ανα εκατον και ανα πεντηκοντα.
And having received the five loaves and the two fish, gazing up to heaven, he blessed and broke the bread, and he gave it to his disciples to set before them. And the two fish he divided among them all.41 Και λαβων τους πεντε αρτους και τα δυο οψαρια, αναβλεψας εις τον ουρανον ηυλογησε και κατεκοψε τους αρτους και εδιδεν εις τους μαθητας αυτου δια να βαλωσιν εμπροσθεν αυτων, και τα δυο οψαρια εμοιρασεν εις παντας.
And they all ate and were satisfied.42 Και εφαγον παντες και εχορτασθησαν.
And they brought together the remainder: twelve baskets full of fragments and of fish.43 Και εσηκωσαν απο των κλασματων δωδεκα κοφινους πληρεις και απο των οψαριων.
Now those who ate were five thousand men.44 Ησαν δε οι φαγοντες τους αρτους εως πεντακισχιλιοι ανδρες.
And without delay he urged his disciples to climb into the boat, so that they might precede him across the sea to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the people.45 Και ευθυς ηναγκασε τους μαθητας αυτου να εμβωσιν εις το πλοιον και να προυπαγωσιν εις το περαν προς Βηθσαιδαν, εωσου αυτος απολυση τον οχλον?
And when he had dismissed them, he went to the mountain to pray.46 και απολυσας αυτους, υπηγεν εις το ορος να προσευχηθη.
And when it was late, the boat was in the midst of the sea, and he was alone on the land.47 Και οτε εγεινεν εσπερα, το πλοιον ητο εν τω μεσω της θαλασσης και αυτος μονος επι της γης.
And seeing them struggling to row, (for the wind was against them,) and about the fourth watch of the night, he came to them, walking upon the sea. And he intended to pass by them.48 Και ειδεν αυτους βασανιζομενους εις το να κωπηλατωσι?
But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they thought it was an apparition, and they cried out.49 Οι δε ιδοντες αυτον περιπατουντα επι της θαλασσης ενομισαν οτι ειναι φαντασμα και ανεκραξαν?
For they all saw him, and they were very disturbed. And immediately he spoke with them, and he said to them: “Be strengthened in faith. It is I. Do not be afraid.”50 διοτι παντες ειδον αυτον και εταραχθησαν.
And he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. And they became even more astonished within themselves.51 Και ανεβη προς αυτους εις το πλοιον, και επαυσεν ο ανεμος?
For they did not understand about the bread. For their heart had been blinded.52 Διοτι δεν ενοησαν εκ των αρτων, επειδη η καρδια αυτων ητο πεπωρωμενη.
And when they had crossed over, they arrived in the land of Genesaret, and they reached the shore.53 Και διαπερασαντες ηλθον εις την γην Γεννησαρετ και ελιμενισθησαν.
And when they had disembarked from the boat, the people immediately recognized him.54 Και οτε εξηλθον εκ του πλοιου, ευθυς γνωρισαντες αυτον,
And running throughout that entire region, they began to carry on beds those who had maladies, to where they heard that he would be.55 εδραμον εις παντα τα περιχωρα εκεινα και ηρχισαν να περιφερωσιν επι των κραββατων τους αρρωστους, οπου ηκουον οτι ειναι εκει.
And in whichever place he entered, in towns or villages or cities, they placed the infirm in the main streets, and they pleaded with him that they might touch even the hem of his garment. And as many as touched him were made healthy.56 Και οπου εισηρχετο εις κωμας η πολεις η αγρους, εθετον εις τας αγορας τους ασθενεις και παρεκαλουν αυτον να εγγισωσι καν το κρασπεδον του ιματιου αυτου?
