And departing from there, he went away to his own country; and his disciples followed him.1 Salió de allí y vino a su patria, y sus discípulos le siguen.
And when the Sabbath arrived, he began to teach in the synagogue. And many, upon hearing him, were amazed at his doctrine, saying: “Where did this one get all these things?” and, “What is this wisdom, which has been given to him?” and, “Such powerful deeds, which are wrought by his hands!”2 Cuando llegó el sábado se puso a enseñar en la sinagoga.
“Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joseph, and Jude, and Simon? Are not his sisters also here with us?” And they took great offense at him.3 ¿No es éste el carpintero, el hijo de María y hermano de Santiago, Joset, Judas y Simón?
And Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and in his own house, and among his own kindred.”4 Jesús les dijo: «Un profeta sólo en su patria, entre sus parientes y en su casa carece de prestigio».
And he was not able to perform any miracles there, except that he cured a few of the infirm by laying his hands on them.5 Y no podía hacer allí ningún milagro, a excepción de unos pocos enfermos a quienes curó imponiéndoles las manos.
And he wondered, because of their unbelief, and he traveled around in the villages, teaching.6 Y se maravilló de su falta de fe. Y recorría los pueblos del contorno enseñando.
And he called the twelve. And he began to send them out in twos, and he gave them authority over unclean spirits.7 Y llama a los Doce y comenzó a enviarlos de dos en dos, dándoles poder sobre los espíritus inmundos.
And he instructed them not to take anything for the journey, except a staff: no traveling bag, no bread, and no money belt,8 Les ordenó que nada tomasen para el camino, fuera de un bastón: ni pan, ni alforja, ni calderilla en la faja;
but to wear sandals, and not to wear two tunics.9 sino: «Calzados con sandalias y no vistáis dos túnicas».
And he said to them: “Whenever you have entered into a house, stay there until you depart from that place.10 Y les dijo: «Cuando entréis en una casa, quedaos en ella hasta marchar de allí.
And whoever will neither receive you, nor listen to you, as you go away from there, shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.”11 Si algún lugar no os recibe y no os escuchan, marchaos de allí sacudiendo el polvo de la planta de vuestros pies, en testimonio contra ellos».
And going out, they were preaching, so that people would repent.12 Y, yéndose de allí, predicaron que se convirtieran;
And they cast out many demons, and they anointed many of the sick with oil and healed them.13 expulsaban a muchos demonios, y ungían con aceite a muchos enfermos y los curaban.
And king Herod heard of it, (for his name had become well-known) and he said: “John the Baptist has risen again from the dead, and because of this, miracles are at work in him.”14 Se enteró el rey Herodes, pues su nombre se había hecho célebre.
But others were saying, “Because it is Elijah.” Still others were saying, “Because he is a prophet, like one of the prophets.”15 Otros decían: «Es Elías»; otros: «Es un profeta como los demás profetas».
When Herod had heard it, he said, “John whom I beheaded, the same has risen again from the dead.”16 Al enterarse Herodes, dijo: «Aquel Juan, a quien yo decapité, ése ha resucitado».
For Herod himself had sent to capture John, and had chained him in prison, because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip; for he had married her.17 Es que Herodes era el que había enviado a prender a Juan y le había encadenado en la cárcel por causa de Herodías, la mujer de su hermano Filipo, con quien Herodes se había casado.
For John was saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”18 Porque Juan decía a Herodes: «No te está permitido tener la mujer de tu hermano».
Now Herodias was devising treachery against him; and she wanted to kill him, but she was unable.19 Herodías le aborrecía y quería matarle, pero no podía,
For Herod was apprehensive of John, knowing him to be a just and holy man, and so he guarded him. And he heard that he was accomplishing many things, and so he listened to him willingly.20 pues Herodes temía a Juan, sabiendo que era hombre justo y santo, y le protegía; y al oírle, quedaba muy perplejo, y le escuchaba con gusto.
And when an opportune time had arrived, Herod held a feast on his birthday, with the leaders, and the tribunes, and the first rulers of Galilee.21 Y llegó el día oportuno, cuando Herodes, en su cumpleaños, dio un banquete a sus magnates, a los tribunos y a los principales de Galilea.
And when the daughter of the same Herodias had entered, and danced, and pleased Herod, along with those who were at table with him, the king said to the girl, “Request from me whatever you want, and I will give it to you.”22 Entró la hija de la misma Herodías, danzó, y gustó mucho a Herodes y a los comensales.
And he swore to her, “Anything that you request, I will give to you, even up to half my kingdom.”23 Y le juró: «Te daré lo que me pidas, hasta la mitad de mi reino».
And when she had gone out, she said to her mother, “What shall I request?” But her mother said, “The head of John the Baptist.”24 Salió la muchacha y preguntó a su madre: «¿Qué voy a pedir?»
And immediately, when she had entered with haste to the king, she petitioned him, saying: “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”25 Entrando al punto apresuradamente adonde estaba el rey, le pidió: «Quiero que ahora mismo me des, en una bandeja, la cabeza de Juan el Bautista».
And the king was greatly saddened. But because of his oath, and because of those who were sitting with him at table, he was not willing to disappoint her.26 El rey se llenó de tristeza, pero no quiso desairarla a causa del juramento y de los comensales.
And he beheaded him in prison, and he brought his head on a platter. And he gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it her mother.28 y trajo su cabeza en una bandeja, y se la dio a la muchacha, y la muchacha se la dio a su madre.
When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body, and they placed it in a tomb.29 Al enterarse sus discípulos, vinieron a recoger el cadáver y le dieron sepultura.
And the Apostles, returning to Jesus, reported to him everything that they had done and taught.30 Los apóstoles se reunieron con Jesús y le contaron todo lo que habían hecho y lo que habían enseñado.
And he said to them, “Go out alone, into a deserted place, and rest for a little while.” For there were so many who were coming and going, that they did not even have time to eat.31 El, entonces, les dice: «Venid también vosotros aparte, a un lugar solitario, para descansar un poco».
And they saw them going away, and many knew about it. And together they ran by foot from all the cities, and they arrived before them.33 Pero les vieron marcharse y muchos cayeron en cuenta; y fueron allá corriendo, a pie, de todas las ciudades y llegaron antes que ellos.
And Jesus, going out, saw a great multitude. And he took pity on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd, and he began to teach them many things.34 Y al desembarcar, vio mucha gente, sintió compasión de ellos, pues estaban como ovejas que no tienen pastor, y se puso a enseñarles muchas cosas.
And when many hours had now passed, his disciples drew near to him, saying: “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late.35 Era ya una hora muy avanzada cuando se le acercaron sus discípulos y le dijeron: «El lugar está deshabitado y ya es hora avanzada.
Send them away, so that by going out to nearby villages and towns, they might buy provisions for themselves to eat.”36 Despídelos para que vayan a las aldeas y pueblos del contorno a comprarse de comer».
And responding, he said to them, “Give them something to eat yourselves.” And they said to him, “Let us go out and buy bread for two hundred denarii, and then we will give them something to eat.”37 El les contestó: «Dadles vosotros de comer».
And he said to them: “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.”38 El les dice: «¿Cuántos panes tenéis? Id a ver».
And he instructed them to make them all sit down in groups on the green grass.39 Entonces les mandó que se acomodaran todos por grupos sobre la verde hierba.
And they sat down in divisions by hundreds and by fifties.40 Y se acomodaron por grupos de cien y de cincuenta.
And having received the five loaves and the two fish, gazing up to heaven, he blessed and broke the bread, and he gave it to his disciples to set before them. And the two fish he divided among them all.41 Y tomando los cinco panes y los dos peces, y levantando los ojos al cielo, pronunció la bendición, partió los panes y los iba dando a los discípulos para que se los fueran sirviendo. También repartió entre todos los dos peces.
And they all ate and were satisfied.42 Comieron todos y se saciaron.
And they brought together the remainder: twelve baskets full of fragments and of fish.43 Y recogieron las sobras, doce canastos llenos y también lo de los peces.
Now those who ate were five thousand men.44 Los que comieron los panes fueron 5.000 hombres.
And without delay he urged his disciples to climb into the boat, so that they might precede him across the sea to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the people.45 Inmediatamente obligó a sus discípulos a subir a la barca y a ir por delante hacia Betsaida, mientras él despedía a la gente.
And when he had dismissed them, he went to the mountain to pray.46 Después de despedirse de ellos, se fue al monte a orar.
And when it was late, the boat was in the midst of the sea, and he was alone on the land.47 Al atardecer, estaba la barca en medio del mar y él, solo, en tierra.
And seeing them struggling to row, (for the wind was against them,) and about the fourth watch of the night, he came to them, walking upon the sea. And he intended to pass by them.48 Viendo que ellos se fatigaban remando, pues el viento les era contrario, a eso de la cuarta vigilia de la noche viene hacia ellos caminando sobre el mar y quería pasarles de largo.
But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they thought it was an apparition, and they cried out.49 Pero ellos viéndole caminar sobre el mar, creyeron que era un fantasma y se pusieron a gritar,
For they all saw him, and they were very disturbed. And immediately he spoke with them, and he said to them: “Be strengthened in faith. It is I. Do not be afraid.”50 pues todos le habían visto y estaban turbados.
And he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. And they became even more astonished within themselves.51 Subió entonces donde ellos a la barca, y amainó el viento, y quedaron en su interior completamente estupefactos,
For they did not understand about the bread. For their heart had been blinded.52 pues no habían entendido lo de los panes, sino que su mente estaba embotada.
And when they had crossed over, they arrived in the land of Genesaret, and they reached the shore.53 Terminada la travesía, llegaron a tierra en Genesaret y atracaron.
And when they had disembarked from the boat, the people immediately recognized him.54 Apenas desembarcaron, le reconocieron en seguida,
And running throughout that entire region, they began to carry on beds those who had maladies, to where they heard that he would be.55 recorrieron toda aquella región y comenzaron a traer a los enfermos en camillas adonde oían que él estaba.
And in whichever place he entered, in towns or villages or cities, they placed the infirm in the main streets, and they pleaded with him that they might touch even the hem of his garment. And as many as touched him were made healthy.56 Y dondequiera que entraba, en pueblos, ciudades o aldeas, colocaban a los enfermos en las plazas y le pedían que tocaran siquiera la orla de su manto; y cuantos la tocaron quedaban salvados.
