But Eliphaz the Themanite, answering, said:1 Élifaz de Téman prit alors la parole:
Will a wise man answer as if he were speaking wind, and will he fill his stomach with fire?2 Un savoir aussi creux, est-ce la réponse d’un sage: rien qu’un vent d’est, et le voilà rempli!
You rebuke with words he who is not equal to you, and you speak what is not expedient for you,3 Il parle, et ce sont des critiques négatives, des mots qui n’apportent rien.
to such an extent that, within yourself, you have expelled reverence and have taken away prayers from the presence of God.4 Voilà que tu renverses la sainte crainte, tu ne veux plus penser à la manière de Dieu.
For your iniquity has mislead your mouth, and you imitate the tongue of blasphemers.5 Ton fond mauvais te fait parler, et te fournit des raisons paradoxales.
Your own mouth will condemn you, not I; and your own lips will answer you.6 Ce sont tes mots qui te condamnent, pas moi, ta propre bouche témoigne contre toi!
Are you the first man who was born, or were you formed before the hills?7 Es-tu né le premier dans l’espèce humaine, venu au jour quand les montagnes n’étaient pas?
Have you heard the intentions of God, and will his wisdom be inferior to you?8 Quand Dieu décidait, étais-tu là pour entendre, as-tu fais main basse sur la sagesse?
What do you know, about which we are ignorant? What do you understand that we do not know?9 Que sais-tu que nous ne sachions? Comprends-tu des choses qui nous échappent?
There are with us both aged and ancient men, even more senior than your fathers.10 Dans notre camp sont nos aînés, les anciens: ils seraient plus âgés que ton père.
Is it so important that God should console you? But your own depraved words prevent this.11 Tu ne veux donc pas des consolations de Dieu et des paroles qu’on te dit gentiment?
Why does your heart exalt you, and why do you gaze with your eyes, as if thinking great things?12 Pourquoi réagir avec tant de passion, pourquoi ces regards égarés,
Why does your spirit stir against God, so as to utter such speeches from your mouth?13 pour te défouler contre Dieu et déblatérer sans aucune retenue?
What is man that he should be immaculate, and that he should appear just, having been born of woman?14 Un humain pourrait-il prétendre qu’il est pur? peut-il se justifier, celui qui naît d’une femme?
Behold, among his holy ones not one is immutable, and even the heavens are not pure in his sight.15 À ses anges même Dieu ne fait pas confiance; la voûte cristalline n’est pas pure à ses yeux.
How much more abominable and useless is the man who drinks as if from the water of iniquity?16 Que dire de cet être écœurant, corrompu, qui boit l’injustice comme l’eau?
I will reveal to you, so listen to me; and I will explain to you what I have seen.17 Écoute-moi, je veux t’instruire; je vais te raconter ce que j’ai vu.
The wise acknowledge, and they do not leave behind, their fathers,18 Voici ce qu’enseignent les sages: ce qu’ils nous disent, le tenant de leurs pères,
to whom alone the earth has been given, and no stranger passed among them.19 ces hommes à qui le pays fut donné loin de toute présence étrangère:
The impious is arrogant for all his days, and the number of the years of his tyranny is uncertain.20 c’est un tourment que la vie du méchant, les années auxquelles a droit le violent.
The sound of terror is always in his ears; and when there is peace, he always suspects treason.21 Il entend sans cesse des propos alarmistes: est-il en paix? les pillards vont l’assaillir,
He does not believe that it is possible for him to be turned from darkness into the light, for he sees around him the sword on every side.22 plus moyen d’échapper aux ténèbres, il en est sûr, son destin c’est l’épée,
When he moves himself to seek bread, he knows that the day of darkness has been prepared for his hand.23 après quoi il sera la proie des vautours, il sent que le jour fatal est proche: il est là!
Tribulation will terrify him, and anguish will prevail over him, like a king who is being prepared to go to battle.24 Détresse et angoisse: c’est l’épouvante; attaqué par un roi, son mal ne serait pas pire.
For he has extended his hand against God, and he has strengthened himself against the Almighty.25 Mais voilà: il levait le poing contre Dieu, face au Tout-Puissant il jouait au brave.
He has rushed against him with his throat exposed, and he has been armed with a fat neck.26 Il s’élançait contre lui, tête baissée, s’abritant derrière un gros bouclier,
Thickness has covered his face, and lard hangs down from his sides.27 on lui voyait une face bouffie, la ceinture alourdie de graisse.
He has lived in desolate cities and deserted houses, which have been turned into tombs.28 Il s’était établi en des villes détruites, avec des maisons où nul n’habite, toujours en danger de s’écrouler.
He will not be enriched, nor will his basic necessities endure, nor will he establish his root in the earth.29 Mais il ne s’y fera pas riche! Sa fortune ne tiendra pas, il ne couvrira pas le pays de son ombre.
He will not withdraw from the darkness; the flame will burn up his branches, and he will be defeated by the breath of his own mouth.30 Il n’échappera pas aux ténèbres, le feu dessèchera ses tiges vertes, le vent emportera sa fleur.
He will not believe, being vainly deceived by error, that he could be redeemed at any price.31 Il a su s’élever: qu’il ne s’y fie pas, nous savons que c’est pure apparence.
Before his time is completed, he will pass into ruin and his hands will wither away.32 Ses rejetons se flétriront avant le jour, sa ramure ne reverdira pas.
He will be wounded like a grapevine, when its cluster is in first flower, and like an olive tree that casts off its flower.33 Comme pour la vigne ses fruits verts se perdront, comme l’olivier il laissera tomber ses fleurs.
For the congregation of the hypocrites is fruitless, and fire will devour the tabernacles of those who love to accept money.34 Oui, le parti des impies est stérile, et les corrompus, le feu dévore leurs tentes.
He has conceived sorrow, and he has brought forth iniquity, and his womb prepares deceit.35 Qui a conçu du Mal enfante le malheur; son propre ventre lui mûrit sa déception.
