NEW AMERICAN BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said,1 Then came to him from Jerusalem scribes and Pharisees, saying:
"Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They do not wash (their) hands when they eat a meal."2 Why do thy disciples trangress the tradition of the ancients? For they wash not their hands when they eat bread.
He said to them in reply, "And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?3 But he answering, said to them: Why do you also transgress the commandment of God for your tradition? For God said:
For God said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and 'Whoever curses father or mother shall die.'4 Honour thy father and mother: And: He that shall curse father or mother, let him die the death.
But you say, 'Whoever says to father or mother, "Any support you might have had from me is dedicated to God,"5 But you say: Whosoever shall say to father or mother, The gift whatsoever proceedeth from me, shall profit thee.
need not honor his father.' You have nullified the word of God for the sake of your tradition.6 And he shall not honour his father or his mother: and you have made void the commandment of God for your tradition.
Hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy about you when he said:7 Hypocrites, well hath Isaias prophesied of you, saying:
'This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me;8 This people honoureth me with their lips: but their heart is far from me.
in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts.'"9 And in vain do they worship me, teaching doctrines and commandments of men.
He summoned the crowd and said to them, "Hear and understand.10 And having called together the multitudes unto him, he said to them: Hear ye and understand.
It is not what enters one's mouth that defiles that person; but what comes out of the mouth is what defiles one."11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man: but what cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.
Then his disciples approached and said to him, "Do you know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard what you said?"12 Then came his disciples, and said to him: Dost thou know that the Pharisees, when they heard this word, were scandalized?
He said in reply, "Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted.13 But he answering them, said: Every plant which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.
Let them alone; they are blind guides (of the blind). If a blind person leads a blind person, both will fall into a pit."14 Let them alone: they are blind, and leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into the pit.
Then Peter said to him in reply, "Explain (this) parable to us."15 And Peter answering, said to him: Expound to us this parable.
He said to them, "Are even you still without understanding?16 But he said: Are you also yet without understanding?
Do you not realize that everything that enters the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled into the latrine?17 Do you not understand, that whatsoever entereth into the mouth, goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the privy?
But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile.18 But the things which proceed out of the mouth, come forth from the heart, and those things defile a man.
For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, unchastity, theft, false witness, blasphemy.19 For from the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimonies, blasphemies.
These are what defile a person, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile."20 These are the things that defile a man. But to eat with unwashed hands doth not defile a man.
Then Jesus went from that place and withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.21 And Jesus went from thence, and retired into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.
And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out, "Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon."22 And behold a woman of Canaan who came out of those coasts, crying out, said to him: Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David: my daughter is grieviously troubled by the devil.
But he did not say a word in answer to her. His disciples came and asked him, "Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us."23 Who answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying: Send her away, for she crieth after us:
He said in reply, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."24 And he answering, said: I was not sent but to the sheep that are lost of the house of Israel.
But the woman came and did him homage, saying, "Lord, help me."25 But she came and adored him, saying: Lord, help me.
He said in reply, "It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs."26 Who answering, said: It is not good to take the bread of the children, and to cast it to the dogs.
She said, "Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters."27 But she said: Yea, Lord; for the whelps also eat of the crumbs that fall from the table of their masters.
Then Jesus said to her in reply, "O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish." And her daughter was healed from that hour.28 Then Jesus answering, said to her: O woman, great is thy faith: be it done to thee as thou wilt: and her daughter was cured from that hour.
Moving on from there Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee, went up on the mountain, and sat down there.29 And when Jesus had passed away from thence, he came nigh the sea of Galilee. And going up into a mountain, he sat there.
Great crowds came to him, having with them the lame, the blind, the deformed, the mute, and many others. They placed them at his feet, and he cured them.30 And there came to him great multitudes, having with them the dumb, the blind, the lame, the maimed, and many others: and they cast them down at his feet, and he healed them:
The crowds were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the deformed made whole, the lame walking, and the blind able to see, and they glorified the God of Israel.31 So that the multitudes marvelled seeing the dumb speak, the lame walk, and the blind see: and they glorified the God of Israel.
Jesus summoned his disciples and said, "My heart is moved with pity for the crowd, for they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, for fear they may collapse on the way."32 And Jesus called together his disciples, and said: I have compassion on the multitudes, because they continue with me now three days, and have not what to eat, and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.
The disciples said to him, "Where could we ever get enough bread in this deserted place to satisfy such a crowd?"33 And the disciples say unto him: Whence then should we have so many loaves in the desert, as to fill so great a multitude?
Jesus said to them, "How many loaves do you have?" "Seven," they replied, "and a few fish."34 And Jesus said to them: How many loaves have you? But they said: Seven, and a few little fishes.
He ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground.35 And he commanded the multitude to sit down upon the ground.
Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, gave thanks, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds.36 And taking the seven loaves and the fishes, and giving thanks, he brake, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the people.
They all ate and were satisfied. They picked up the fragments left over--seven baskets full.37 And they did all eat, and had their fill. And they took up seven baskets full, of what remained of the fragments.
Those who ate were four thousand men, not counting women and children.38 And they that did eat, were four thousand men, beside children and women.
And when he had dismissed the crowds, he got into the boat and came to the district of Magadan.39 And having dismissed the multitude, he went up into a boat, and came into the coasts of Magedan.
