Sirach 16

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Desire not a brood of worthless children, nor rejoice in wicked offspring.	1 Non desiderare molti figli, se inutili, e non rallegrarti dei figli che sono empi.
2 Many though they be, exult not in them if they have not the fear of the LORD.	2 Quando sono molti, non esserne contento, se non c'è con loro il timore del Signore.
3 Count not on their length of life, have no hope in their future. For one can be better than a thousand; rather die childless than have godless children!	3 Non contare nella loro giovane età, e non confidare nel loro numero, perché vale più di mille un solo figlio, il morire senza prole che con figli empi.
4 Through one wise man can a city be peopled; through a clan of rebels it becomes desolate.	4 Uno solo, da saggio, edifica la città, ma un'intera tribù d'insensati sarà distrutta.
5 Many such things has my eye seen, even more than these has my ear heard.	5 Il mio occhio ha visto molte di tali cose, e cose ancor più forti ha udito il mio orecchio.
6 Against a sinful band fire is enkindled, upon a godless people wrath flames out.	6 Nelle adunanze dei peccatori s'accende il fuoco e nel popolo ribelle s'accese la collera.
7 He forgave not the leaders of old who rebelled long ago in their might;	7 Egli non perdonò gli antichi giganti, che si ribellarono con la loro forza.
8 He spared not the neighbors of Lot whom he detested for their pride;	8 Non risparmiò la nuova patria di Lot, li prese in abominio per la loro arroganza.
9 Nor did he spare the doomed people who were uprooted because of their sin;	9 Non ebbe pietà di un popolo perduto, che fu scacciato per i suoi peccati,
10 Nor the six hundred thousand foot soldiers who perished for the impiety of their hearts.	10 né dei seicentomila uomini, tutti in congiura perché duri di cuore.
11 And had there been but one stiffnecked man, it were a wonder had he gone unpunished. For mercy and anger alike are with him who remits and forgives, though on the wicked alights his wrath.	11 Se anche ci fosse uno solo di dura cervice, farebbe meraviglia se fosse perdonato;
12 Great as his mercy is his punishment; he judges men, each according to his deeds.	12 perché in lui c'è misericordia e ira, egli è potente quando perdona e quando riversa l'ira.
13 A criminal does not escape with his plunder; a just man's hope God does not leave unfulfilled.	13 E' grande nella misericordia e tremendo nel castigo, giudica l'uomo secondo le sue opere.
14 Whoever does good has his reward, which each receives according to his deeds.	14 Il peccatore non sfuggirà col bottino, né resterà delusa la pazienza del pio.
15 Say not: "I am hidden from God; in heaven who remembers me? Among so many people I cannot be known; what am I in the world of spirits?	15 Riconoscerà ogni atto di misericordia, ciascuno riceverà secondo le sue opere.
16 Behold, the heavens, the heaven of heavens, the earth and the abyss tremble at his visitation;	16 Non dire: "Mi nasconderò dal Signore, lassù chi si ricorderà di me?
17 The roots of the mountains, the earth's foundations, at his mere glance, quiver and quake.	17 Fra tanta gente non sarò riconosciuto, che valgo io nell'immensa creazione?".
18 Of me, therefore, he will take no thought; with my ways who will concern himself?	18 Ecco, il cielo e il cielo del cielo, l'abisso e la terra tremano al suo apparire.
19 If I sin, no eye will see me; if all in secret I am disloyal, who is to know?	19 Anche i monti e le fondamenta della terra tremano di spavento quando egli li guarda.
20 Who tells him of just deeds and what could I expect for doing my duty?"	20 Non rifletterà il cuore su queste cose, non mediterà sulle sue vie?
21 Such are the thoughts of senseless men, which only the foolish knave will think.	21 Come un uragano che l'uomo non vede, così molte sue opere sono nascoste.
22 Hearken to me, my son, take my advice, apply your mind to my words,	22 Chi narrerà le opere della sua giustizia, o chi le aspetterà, se l'alleanza ancora non si compie?
23 While I propose measured wisdom, and impart accurate knowledge.	23 L'uomo dal cuore piccolo pensa così, l'insensato vaneggia nelle pazzie del suo cuore.
24 When at the first God created his works and, as he made them, assigned their tasks,	24 Ascolta, o figlio, impara a comprendere, applica il tuo cuore alle mie parole.
25 He ordered for all time what they were to do and their domains from generation to generation. They were not to hunger, nor grow weary, nor ever cease from their tasks.	25 Rivelerò con precisione l'istruzione, con esattezza annunzierò la scienza.
26 Not one should ever crowd its neighbor, nor should they ever disobey his word.	26 Quando il Signore creò le sue opere all'inizio, dopo averle fatte, dispose i loro confini.
27 Then the LORD looked upon the earth, and filled it with his blessings.	27 Ordinò le sue opere per sempre, stabilì il loro dominio per le varie epoche; non hanno fame né si stancano, non cessano di compiere il loro lavoro.
28 Its surface he covered with all manner of life which must return into it again.	28 Ciascuna non urta quella che è vicina, non si ribellano mai alla sua parola.
	29 Il Signore inoltre ha guardato la terra, e l'ha riempita con i suoi beni.
	30 Ricoprì la sua faccia di ogni vivente, che ad essa farà il suo ritorno.
