Sirach 16

1 Desire not a brood of worthless children, nor rejoice in wicked offspring.	1 Non desiderare una moltitudine di figli buoni a nulla, non gioire per figli empi.
2 Many though they be, exult not in them if they have not the fear of the LORD.	2 Se aumentano di numero non gioire, se sono privi del timore del Signore.
3 Count not on their length of life, have no hope in their future. For one can be better than a thousand; rather die childless than have godless children!	3 Non confidare su una loro vita lunga e non fondarti sul loro numero, poiché è preferibile uno a mille e morir senza figli che averne degli empi.
4 Through one wise man can a city be peopled; through a clan of rebels it becomes desolate.	4 La città potrà ripopolarsi per opera di un solo assennato, mentre la stirpe degli iniqui sarà distrutta.
5 Many such things has my eye seen, even more than these has my ear heard.	5 Il mio occhio ha visto molte simili cose; il mio orecchio ne ha sentite ancora più gravi.
6 Against a sinful band fire is enkindled, upon a godless people wrath flames out.	6 Nell'assemblea dei peccatori un fuoco si accende, contro un popolo ribelle è divampata l'ira.
7 He forgave not the leaders of old who rebelled long ago in their might;	7 Dio non perdonò agli antichi giganti, che si erano ribellati per la loro forza.
8 He spared not the neighbors of Lot whom he detested for their pride;	8 Non risparmiò i concittadini di Lot, che egli aveva in orrore per la loro superbia.
9 Nor did he spare the doomed people who were uprooted because of their sin;	9 Non ebbe pietà di nazioni di perdizione, che si erano esaltate per i loro peccati.
10 Nor the six hundred thousand foot soldiers who perished for the impiety of their hearts.	10 Così trattò i seicentomila uomini che sono periti per l'ostinazione del loro cuore.
11 And had there been but one stiffnecked man, it were a wonder had he gone unpunished. For mercy and anger alike are with him who remits and forgives, though on the wicked alights his wrath.	11 Ci fosse un solo uomo di dura cervice, sarebbe strano se restasse impunito,
12 Great as his mercy is his punishment; he judges men, each according to his deeds.	12 poiché misericordia e ira sono in Dio, potente quando perdona e quando riversa l'ira.
13 A criminal does not escape with his plunder; a just man's hope God does not leave unfulfilled.	13 Tanto grande la sua misericordia, quanto grande la sua severità; egli giudicherà l'uomo secondo le sue opere.
14 Whoever does good has his reward, which each receives according to his deeds.	14 Non sfuggirà il peccatore con la sua rapina, ma neppure la pazienza del pio sarà delusa.
15 Say not: "I am hidden from God; in heaven who remembers me? Among so many people I cannot be known; what am I in the world of spirits?	15 Egli farà posto a tutta la sua generosità; ciascuno sarà trattato secondo le sue opere.
16 Behold, the heavens, the heaven of heavens, the earth and the abyss tremble at his visitation;	16 Non dire: "Mi terrò celato al Signore! Chi penserà a me lassù?
17 The roots of the mountains, the earth's foundations, at his mere glance, quiver and quake.	17 Non sarò riconosciuto fra un popolo numeroso, chi sarò io in mezzo a una creazione senza numero?".
18 Of me, therefore, he will take no thought; with my ways who will concern himself?	18 Ecco il cielo e il cielo dei cieli, l'abisso e la terra sussultano quando egli appare.
19 If I sin, no eye will see me; if all in secret I am disloyal, who is to know?	19 Anche i monti e le fondamenta della terra si scuotono di spavento quando egli li guarda.
20 Who tells him of just deeds and what could I expect for doing my duty?"	20 Ma nessuno riflette su queste cose; al suo modo di agire chi ci bada?
21 Such are the thoughts of senseless men, which only the foolish knave will think.	21 Anche la bufera che nessuno contempla, e la maggior parte delle sue opere, sono nel mistero.
22 Hearken to me, my son, take my advice, apply your mind to my words,	22 "Chi a Dio annunzierà le opere di giustizia? Ovvero chi le attende? L'alleanza infatti è lontana".
23 While I propose measured wisdom, and impart accurate knowledge.	23 Tali cose pensa chi ha il cuore perverso; lo stolto, appunto errando, pensa sciocchezze.
24 When at the first God created his works and, as he made them, assigned their tasks,	24 Ascoltami, figlio, e impara la scienza; e sii attento nel tuo cuore alle mie parole.
25 He ordered for all time what they were to do and their domains from generation to generation. They were not to hunger, nor grow weary, nor ever cease from their tasks.	25 Manifesterò con esattezza la mia dottrina; con cura annunzierò la scienza.
26 Not one should ever crowd its neighbor, nor should they ever disobey his word.	26 Nella creazione del Signore le sue opere sono fin dal principio, e dalla loro origine ne separò le parti.
27 Then the LORD looked upon the earth, and filled it with his blessings.	27 Egli ordinò per l'eternità le sue opere, ne stabilì l'attività per le generazioni future. Non hanno fame né si stancano, eppure non interrompono il loro lavoro.
28 Its surface he covered with all manner of life which must return into it again.	28 Nessuna di loro urta la sua vicina, mai disubbidiranno ad un suo comando.
	29 Dopo ciò il Signore riguardò sulla terra e la riempì dei suoi doni.
	30 Ne ricoprì la superficie con ogni genere di viventi e ad essa faranno ritorno.
