μετα δε το παυσασθαι ελιουν της λεξεως ειπεν ο κυριος τω ιωβ δια λαιλαπος και νεφων1 But the Lord, responding to Job from a whirlwind, said:
τις ουτος ο κρυπτων με βουλην συνεχων δε ρηματα εν καρδια εμε δε οιεται κρυπτειν2 Who is this that wraps sentences in unskilled words?
ζωσαι ωσπερ ανηρ την οσφυν σου ερωτησω δε σε συ δε μοι αποκριθητι3 Gird your waist like a man. I will question you, and you must answer me.
που ης εν τω θεμελιουν με την γην απαγγειλον δε μοι ει επιστη συνεσιν4 Where were you, when I set the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.
τις εθετο τα μετρα αυτης ει οιδας η τις ο επαγαγων σπαρτιον επ' αυτης5 Who set its measurements, if you know, or who stretched a line over it?
επι τινος οι κρικοι αυτης πεπηγασιν τις δε εστιν ο βαλων λιθον γωνιαιον επ' αυτης6 Upon what have its bases been grounded, and who set forth its cornerstone,
οτε εγενηθησαν αστρα ηνεσαν με φωνη μεγαλη παντες αγγελοι μου7 when the morning stars praised me together, and all the sons of God made a joyful noise?
εφραξα δε θαλασσαν πυλαις οτε εμαιμασσεν εκ κοιλιας μητρος αυτης εκπορευομενη8 Who enclosed the sea with doors, when it broke forth as if issuing from the womb,
εθεμην δε αυτη νεφος αμφιασιν ομιχλη δε αυτην εσπαργανωσα9 when I stationed a cloud as its garment and wrapped it in a mist as if swaddling an infant?
εθεμην δε αυτη ορια περιθεις κλειθρα και πυλας10 I encircled it with my limits, and I positioned its bars and doors.
ειπα δε αυτη μεχρι τουτου ελευση και ουχ υπερβηση αλλ' εν σεαυτη συντριβησεται σου τα κυματα11 And I said: “This far you will approach, and you will proceeded no further, and here you will break your swelling waves.”
η επι σου συντεταχα φεγγος πρωινον εωσφορος δε ειδεν την εαυτου ταξιν12 Did you, after your birth, command the birth of the sun and show the sunrise its place?
επιλαβεσθαι πτερυγων γης εκτιναξαι ασεβεις εξ αυτης13 And did you hold the extremities of the earth, shaking them, and have you shaken the impious out of it?
η συ λαβων γην πηλον επλασας ζωον και λαλητον αυτον εθου επι γης14 The seal will be restored like clay, and it will remain in place like a garment.
αφειλας δε απο ασεβων το φως βραχιονα δε υπερηφανων συνετριψας15 From the impious, the light will be taken away, and the exalted arm will be broken.
ηλθες δε επι πηγην θαλασσης εν δε ιχνεσιν αβυσσου περιεπατησας16 Have you entered the depths of the sea, and have you taken a walk in the uttermost parts of the abyss?
ανοιγονται δε σοι φοβω πυλαι θανατου πυλωροι δε αδου ιδοντες σε επτηξαν17 Have the gates of death been opened to you, and have you seen the doors of darkness?
νενουθετησαι δε το ευρος της υπ' ουρανον αναγγειλον δη μοι ποση τις εστιν18 Have you considered the breadth of the earth? If you know all things, reveal them to me.
ποια δε γη αυλιζεται το φως σκοτους δε ποιος ο τοπος19 Which is the way that holds the light, and which is the place of darkness?
ει αγαγοις με εις ορια αυτων ει δε και επιστασαι τριβους αυτων20 In this way, you might lead each thing to its final place, and understand the paths of its house.
οιδα αρα οτι τοτε γεγεννησαι αριθμος δε ετων σου πολυς21 So then, did you know when you were to be born? And did you know the number of your days?
ηλθες δε επι θησαυρους χιονος θησαυρους δε χαλαζης εορακας22 Have you been admitted into the storehouses of the snows, and have you gazed upon the stockpile of the brimstone,
αποκειται δε σοι εις ωραν εχθρων εις ημεραν πολεμου και μαχης23 which I have prepared for the time of the enemy, for the day of the battle and the war?
ποθεν δε εκπορευεται παχνη η διασκεδαννυται νοτος εις την υπ' ουρανον24 In what way is the light scattered, and the heat distributed, over the earth?
τις δε ητοιμασεν υετω λαβρω ρυσιν οδον δε κυδοιμων25 Who gave a course to the rainstorms, and a path to the resounding thunder,
του υετισαι επι γην ου ουκ ανηρ ερημον ου ουχ υπαρχει ανθρωπος εν αυτη26 so that it would rain on the earth far from man, in the wilderness where no mortal lingers,
του χορτασαι αβατον και αοικητον και του εκβλαστησαι εξοδον χλοης27 so that it would fill impassable and desolate places, and would bring forth green plants?
τις εστιν υετου πατηρ τις δε εστιν ο τετοκως βωλους δροσου28 Who is the father of rain, or who conceived the drops of dew?
εκ γαστρος δε τινος εκπορευεται ο κρυσταλλος παχνην δε εν ουρανω τις τετοκεν29 From whose womb did the ice proceed, and who created the frost from the air?
η καταβαινει ωσπερ υδωρ ρεον προσωπον δε αβυσσου τις επηξεν30 The waters are hardened to become like stone, and the surface of the abyss freezes over.
συνηκας δε δεσμον πλειαδος και φραγμον ωριωνος ηνοιξας31 Will you have the strength to join together the sparkling stars of the Pleiades, or are you able to disperse the circling of Arcturus?
η διανοιξεις μαζουρωθ εν καιρω αυτου και εσπερον επι κομης αυτου αξεις αυτα32 Can you bring forth the morning star, in its time, and make the evening star rise over the sons of the earth?
επιστασαι δε τροπας ουρανου η τα υπ' ουρανον ομοθυμαδον γινομενα33 Do you know the order of heaven, and can you explain its rules here on the earth?
καλεσεις δε νεφος φωνη και τρομω υδατος λαβρω υπακουσεται σου34 Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, so that an onslaught of waters will cover you?
αποστελεις δε κεραυνους και πορευσονται ερουσιν δε σοι τι εστιν35 Can you send forth lightning bolts, and will they go, and on returning, say to you: “Here we are?”
τις δε εδωκεν γυναιξιν υφασματος σοφιαν η ποικιλτικην επιστημην36 Who placed discernment in the guts of man, or who gave the rooster intelligence?
τις δε ο αριθμων νεφη σοφια ουρανον δε εις γην εκλινεν37 Who can describe the rules of the heavens, or who can put to rest the harmony of heaven?
κεχυται δε ωσπερ γη κονια κεκολληκα δε αυτον ωσπερ λιθω κυβον38 When was the dust cast to become the earth, and when were its clods fastened together?
θηρευσεις δε λεουσιν βοραν ψυχας δε δρακοντων εμπλησεις39 Will you seize prey for the lioness, and will you sustain the lives of her young,
δεδοικασιν γαρ εν κοιταις αυτων καθηνται δε εν υλαις ενεδρευοντες40 as they rest in their dens or lie in wait in pits?
τις δε ητοιμασεν κορακι βοραν νεοσσοι γαρ αυτου προς κυριον κεκραγασιν πλανωμενοι τα σιτα ζητουντες41 Who provides the raven with its meal, when her chicks cry out to God, as they wander around because they have no food?
