Premier livre de Samuel 15

JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Samuel dit à Saül: "C'est moi que Yahvé a envoyé pour te sacrer roi sur son peuple Israël. Ecoutedonc les paroles de Yahvé:	1 Samuel said to Saul, 'I am the man whom Yahweh sent to anoint you as king of his people Israel, sonow listen to the words of Yahweh.
2 Ainsi parle Yahvé Sabaot: J'ai résolu de punir ce qu'Amaleq a fait à Israël, en lui coupant la routequand il montait d'Egypte.	2 This is what Yahweh Sabaoth says, "I intend to punish what Amalek did to Israel -- laying a trap forhim on the way as he was coming up from Egypt.
3 Maintenant, va, frappe Amaleq, voue-le à l'anathème avec tout ce qu'il possède, sois sans pitiépour lui, tue hommes et femmes, enfants et nourrissons, boeufs et brebis, chameaux et ânes."	3 Now, go and crush Amalek; put him under the curse of destruction with al that he possesses. Do notspare him, but kil man and woman, babe and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and donkey." '
4 Saül convoqua le peuple et le passa en revue à Télam: 200.000 fantassins (et 10.000 hommes deJuda).	4 Saul summoned the people and reviewed them at Telaim: two hundred thousand foot soldiers (andten thousand men of Judah).
5 Saül s'avança jusqu'à la ville d'Amaleq et se mit en embuscade dans le ravin.	5 Saul advanced on the town of Amalek and lay in ambush in the river bed.
6 Saül dit aux Qénites: "Partez, séparez-vous des Amalécites, de peur que je ne vous fassedisparaître avec eux, car vous avez été bienveillants à tous les Israélites quand ils montaient d'Egypte." Et lesQénites se séparèrent des Amalécites.	6 Saul said to the Kenites, 'Go away, leave your homes among the Amalekites, in case I destroy youwith them -- you acted with faithful love towards al the Israelites when they were coming up from Egypt.' So theKenites moved away from the Amalekites.
7 Saül battit les Amalécites à partir de Havila en direction de Shur, qui est à l'orient de l'Egypte.	7 Saul then crushed the Amalekites, beginning at Havilah in the direction of Shur, which is to the east ofEgypt.
8 Il prit vivant Agag, roi des Amalécites, et il passa tout le peuple au fil de l'épée, en exécution del'anathème.	8 He took Agag king of the Amalekites alive and, executing the curse of destruction, put al the people tothe sword.
9 Mais Saül et l'armée épargnèrent Agag et le meilleur du petit et du gros bétail, les bêtes grasses etles agneaux, bref tout ce qu'il y avait de bon; ils ne voulurent pas le vouer à l'anathème. Mais tout le troupeau vilet sans valeur, ils le vouèrent à l'anathème.	9 But Saul and the army spared Agag with the best of the sheep and cattle, the fatlings and lambs andal that was good. They did not want to consign these to the curse of destruction; they consigned only what waspoor and worthless.
10 La parole de Yahvé fut adressée à Samuel en ces termes:	10 The word of Yahweh came to Samuel,
11 "Je me repens d'avoir donné la royauté à Saül, car il s'est détourné de moi et n'a pas exécuté mesordres." Samuel s'enflamma et cria vers Yahvé pendant toute la nuit.	11 'I regret having made Saul king, since he has broken his allegiance to me and not carried out myorders.' Samuel was appal ed and cried to Yahweh al night long.
12 Le matin, Samuel partit à la rencontre de Saül. On lui donna cette information: "Saül est allé àKarmel pour s'y dresser un trophée, puis il est reparti plus loin et il est descendu à Gilgal."	12 In the morning, Samuel set off to find Saul. Samuel was told, 'Saul has been to Carmel, to raisehimself a monument there, but now has turned about, moved on and gone down to Gilgal.'
13 Samuel arriva auprès de Saül et Saül lui dit: "Béni sois-tu de Yahvé! J'ai exécuté l'ordre deYahvé."	13 When Samuel reached Saul, Saul said, 'May you be blessed by Yahweh! I have carried outYahweh's orders.'
14 Mais Samuel demanda: "Et qu'est-ce que c'est que ces bêlements qui viennent à mes oreilles etces meuglements que j'entends" --	14 Samuel replied, 'Then what is this bleating of sheep in my ears and the lowing of cattle that I hear?'
15 "On les a amenés d'Amaleq, répondit Saül, car le peuple a épargné le meilleur du petit et dugros bétail en vue de l'offrir en sacrifice à Yahvé ton Dieu. Quant au reste, nous l'avons voué à l'anathème."	15 Saul said, 'They have been brought from Amalek, the people having spared the best of the sheepand cattle to sacrifice them to Yahweh, your God; the rest we have consigned to the curse of destruction.'
16 Mais Samuel dit à Saül: "Cesse donc, et laisse-moi t'annoncer ce que Yahvé m'a révélé cettenuit." Il lui dit: "Parle."	16 Samuel then said to Saul, 'Stop! Let me tel you what Yahweh said to me last night.' He said, 'Go on.'
17 Alors Samuel dit: "Si petit que tu sois à tes propres yeux, n'es-tu pas le chef des tribus d'Israël?Yahvé t'a sacré roi sur Israël.	17 Samuel said, 'Smal as you may be in your own eyes, are you not the leader of the tribes of Israel?Yahweh has anointed you as king of Israel.
18 Il t'a envoyé en expédition et il t'a dit: Pars, voue à l'anathème ces pécheurs, les Amalécites,fais-leur la guerre jusqu'à l'extermination.	18 When Yahweh sent you on a mission he said to you, "Go and put those sinners, the Amalekites,under the curse of destruction and make war on them until they are exterminated."
19 Pourquoi n'as-tu pas obéi à Yahvé? Pourquoi t'es-tu rué sur le butin et as-tu fait ce qui déplaît àYahvé?"	19 Why then did you not obey Yahweh's voice? Why did you fal on the booty and do what is wrong inYahweh's eyes?'
20 Saül répondit à Samuel: "J'ai obéi à Yahvé! J'ai fait l'expédition où il m'envoyait, j'ai ramenéAgag, roi d'Amaleq, et j'ai voué Amaleq à l'anathème.	20 Saul replied to Samuel, 'But I did obey Yahweh's voice. I went on the mission which Yahweh gaveme; I brought back Agag king of the Amalekites; I put Amalek under the curse of destruction;
21 Dans le butin, le peuple a pris, en petit et en gros bétail, le meilleur de ce que frappaitl'anathème pour le sacrifier à Yahvé ton Dieu à Gilgal."	21 and from the booty the people have taken the best sheep and cattle of what was under the curse ofdestruction only to sacrifice them to Yahweh your God in Gilgal.'
22 Mais Samuel dit: "Yahvé se plaît-il aux holocaustes et aux sacrifices comme dans l'obéissance àla parole de Yahvé? Oui, l'obéissance vaut mieux que le sacrifice, la docilité, plus que la graisse des béliers.	22 To which, Samuel said: Is Yahweh pleased by burnt offerings and sacrifices or by obedience toYahweh's voice? Truly, obedience is better than sacrifice, submissiveness than the fat of rams.
23 Un péché de sorcellerie, voilà la rébellion, un crime de téraphim, voilà la présomption! Parceque tu as rejeté la parole de Yahvé, il t'a rejeté pour que tu ne sois plus roi!"	23 Rebellion is a sin of sorcery, presumption a crime of idolatry! 'Since you have rejected Yahweh'sword, he has rejected you as king.'
24 Saül dit à Samuel: "J'ai péché en transgressant l'ordre de Yahvé et tes commandements, parceque j'ai eu peur du peuple et je lui ai obéi.	24 Saul then said to Samuel, 'I have sinned, having broken Yahweh's order and your instructionsbecause I was afraid of the people and yielded to their demands.
25 Maintenant, je t'en prie, pardonne ma faute, reviens avec moi, que j'adore Yahvé."	25 Now, please forgive my sin and come back with me, so that I can worship Yahweh.'
26 Mais Samuel répondit à Saül: "Je ne reviendrai pas avec toi: puisque tu as rejeté la parole deYahvé, Yahvé t'a rejeté pour que tu ne sois plus roi sur Israël."	26 Samuel said to Saul, 'I wil not come back with you, since you have rejected Yahweh's word andYahweh has rejected you as king of Israel.'
27 Comme Samuel se détournait pour partir, Saül saisit le pan de son manteau, qui fut arraché,	27 As Samuel turned away to leave, Saul caught at the hem of his cloak and it tore,
28 et Samuel lui dit: "Aujourd'hui, Yahvé t'a arraché la royauté sur Israël et l'a donnée à ton voisin,qui est meilleur que toi."	28 and Samuel said to him, 'Today Yahweh has torn the kingdom of Israel from you and given it to aneighbour of yours who is better than you.'
29 (Pourtant, la Gloire d'Israël ne ment pas et ne se repent pas, car il n'est pas un homme pour serepentir.)	29 (The Glory of Israel, however, does not lie or go back on his word, not being human and liable to goback on his word.)
30 Saül dit: "J'ai péché, cependant, je t'en prie, honore-moi devant les anciens de mon peuple etdevant Israël, et reviens avec moi pour que j'adore Yahvé ton Dieu."	30 'I have sinned,' Saul said, 'but please stil show me respect in front of my people's elders and in frontof Israel, and come back with me, so that I can worship Yahweh your God.'
31 Samuel revint en compagnie de Saül et celui-ci adora Yahvé.	31 Samuel fol owed Saul back and Saul worshipped Yahweh.
32 Puis Samuel dit: "Amenez-moi Agag, le roi des Amalécites", et Agag vint vers lui en chancelantet dit: "Vraiment, la mort est amère!"	32 Samuel then said, 'Bring me Agag king of the Amalekites!' Agag came towards him unsteadilysaying, 'Truly death is bitter!'
33 Samuel dit: "Comme ton épée a privé des femmes de leurs enfants, entre les femmes, ta mèresera privée de son enfant!" Et Samuel égorgea Agag devant Yahvé à Gilgal.	33 Samuel said: As your sword has left women childless, so wil your mother be left childless amongwomen! Samuel then butchered Agag before Yahweh at Gilgal.
34 Samuel partit pour Rama et Saül remonta chez lui à Gibéa de Saül.	34 Samuel left for Ramah, and Saul went up home to Gibeah of Saul.
35 Samuel ne revit plus Saül jusqu'à sa mort. En effet Samuel pleurait Saül, mais Yahvé s'étaitrepenti de l'avoir fait roi sur Israël.	35 Samuel did not see Saul again til his dying day. Samuel indeed mourned over Saul, but Yahwehregretted having made Saul king of Israel.
