JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 En ce temps-là, il n'y avait pas de roi en Israël. Or, en ce temps-là, la tribu de Dan cherchait unterritoire pour y habiter, car, jusqu'à ce jour, il ne lui était pas échu de territoire parmi les tribus d'Israël.	1 In those days there was no king in Israel. Now in those days the tribe of Dan was in search of aterritory to live in, for until then no territory had fallen to them among the tribes of Israel.
2 Les Danites envoyèrent de leur clan cinq hommes vaillants de Coréa et d'Eshtaol pour reconnaître lepays et l'explorer. Il leur dirent: "Allez explorer le pays." Les cinq hommes arrivèrent dans la montagned'Ephraïm jusqu'à la maison de Mika et ils y passèrent la nuit.	2 From their clan the Danites sent five brave men from Zorah and Eshtaol to reconnoitre the country andexplore it. They said to them, 'Go and explore the country.' The five men came to the highlands of Ephraim, asfar as Micah's house, and spent the night there.
3 Comme ils étaient près de la maison de Mika, ils reconnurent la voix du jeune lévite et, s'approchantde là, ils lui dirent: "Qui t'a fait venir ici? Qu'y fais-tu? Et qu'est-ce que tu as ici?"	3 When they were near Micah's house, they recognised the voice of the young Levite and, going nearer,said to him, 'Who brought you here? What are you doing here? What is keeping you here?'
4 Il leur répondit: "Mika a fait pour moi telle et telle chose. Il m'a pris à gages et je lui sers de prêtre" --	4 He replied, 'Micah has made certain arrangements with me. He pays me a wage and I act as hispriest.'
5 "Consulte donc Dieu, lui répliquèrent-ils, afin que nous sachions si le chemin par lequel nous allonsnous mènera à la réussite" --	5 They replied, 'Then consult God, so that we may know whether the journey we are on wil lead tosuccess.'
6 "Allez en paix, leur répondit le prêtre, votre chemin est sous le regard de Yahvé."	6 The priest replied, 'Go in peace; Yahweh is watching over your journey.'
7 Les cinq hommes partirent donc et ils arrivèrent à Laïsh. Ils virent que les gens qui l'habitaientvivaient en sécurité, à la manière des Sidoniens, tranquilles et confiants, qu'il n'y avait ni insuffisance nirestriction d'aucune sorte dans le pays, qu'ils étaient éloignés des Sidoniens et sans relations avec les Araméens.	7 The five men then left and, arriving at Laish, saw that the people living there had an untroubledexistence, according to the customs of the Sidonians, peaceful and trusting, that there was no lack or shortageof any sort in the territory, that they were a long way away from the Sidonians and that they had no contact withthe Aramaeans.
8 Ils s'en revinrent alors vers leurs frères, à Coréa et à Eshtaol, et ceux-ci leur demandèrent: "Que nousrapportez-vous?"	8 They then went back to their brothers at Zorah and Eshtaol and, when the latter asked them, 'Whathave you to report?'
9 Ils dirent: "Debout! montons contre eux, car nous avons vu le pays, il est excellent. Mais vousdemeurez sans rien dire! N'hésitez pas à partir pour aller prendre possession du pays.	9 they said, 'Up! we must go against them, since we have looked at the country and it is excellent,though you take no action! Waste no time in setting out and taking possession of the country.
10 En arrivant, vous trouverez un peuple confiant. Le pays est étendu, et Dieu l'a mis entre vos mains;c'est un lieu où rien ne manque de ce qu'on peut avoir sur la terre."	10 When you get there, you wil find a trusting people. The country is wide, and God has put it at yourmercy. It is a place where there is no lack of anything on earth.'
11 Ils partirent donc de là, du clan des Danites, de Coréa et d'Eshtaol, 600 hommes équipés pour laguerre.	11 From these places, consequently, from the clan of Danites at Zorah and Eshtaol, six hundred men setout equipped for war.
12 Ils montèrent camper à Qiryat-Yéarim en Juda. C'est pourquoi, encore aujourd'hui, on nomme cetendroit le Camp de Dan. Il se trouve à l'ouest de Qiryat-Yéarim.	12 They went up and camped at Kiriath-Jearim in Judah; and for this reason the place is stil cal ed theCamp of Dan today. It lies to the west of Kiriath-Jearim.
13 De là, ils s'engagèrent dans la montagne d'Ephraïm et ils parvinrent à la maison de Mika.	13 From there they entered the highlands of Ephraim and came to Micah's house.
14 Or les cinq hommes qui étaient allés reconnaître le pays prirent la parole et dirent à leurs frères:"Savez-vous qu'il y a ici dans ces maisons un éphod, des téraphim, une image taillée et une idole de métalfondu? Et maintenant, voyez ce que vous avez à faire."	14 The five men who had been to reconnoitre the country then spoke to their brothers. 'Do you know',they said, 'that in these houses there is an ephod, some domestic images, a carved statue and an idol cast inmetal? So now work out what you have got to do!'
15 Faisant un détour par là, ils allèrent à la maison du jeune lévite, à la maison de Mika, et ils lesaluèrent.	15 So, turning off the road, they went to the young Levite's dwelling, to Micah's house, and greeted himpeaceful y.
16 Pendant que les 600 hommes des Danites, équipés pour la guerre, se tenaient sur le seuil de la porte,	16 While the six hundred men of the Danites, equipped for war, stood at the threshold of the gate,
17 les cinq hommes qui étaient allés reconnaître le pays vinrent, et, étant entrés, ils prirent l'imagetaillée, l'éphod, les téraphim et l'idole de métal fondu, tandis que le prêtre se tenait sur le seuil de la porte avecles 400 hommes équipés pour la guerre.	17 the five who had been to reconnoitre the country went on into the house and took the carved statue,the ephod, the domestic images and the idol cast in metal; meanwhile the priest remained at the threshold of thegate with the six hundred men equipped for war.
18 Ceux-là donc, étant entrés dans la maison de Mika, prirent l'image taillée, l'éphod, les téraphim etl'idole de métal fondu. Mais le prêtre leur dit: "Que faites-vous là" --	18 These men, having entered Micah's house, took the carved statue, the ephod, the domestic imagesand the idol cast in metal. The priest, however, said, 'What are you doing?'
19 "Tais-toi! lui répondirent-ils. Mets ta main sur ta bouche et viens avec nous. Tu seras pour nous unpère et un prêtre. Vaut-il mieux pour toi être le prêtre de la maison d'un seul homme que d'être le prêtre d'unetribu et d'un clan d'Israël?"	19 'Be quiet,' they replied. 'Put your hand over your mouth and come with us, and become our father andpriest. Are you better off as domestic priest to one man, or as priest to a tribe and clan in Israel?'
20 Le prêtre en fut réjoui, il prit l'éphod, les téraphim ainsi que l'image taillée et s'en alla au milieu dela troupe.	20 The priest was delighted; he took the ephod, the domestic images and the carved statue, and wentoff among the people.
21 Reprenant alors leur direction, ils partirent, ayant placé en tête les femmes et les enfants, lestroupeaux et les bagages.	21 Resuming their original line of march, they set off, having put the women, children, livestock andbaggage out in front.
22 Ils étaient déjà loin de la demeure de Mika quand les gens qui habitaient les maisons voisines decelle de Mika donnèrent l'alarme et se mirent à la poursuite des Danites.	22 They had gone some distance from Micah's house, when the people living in the houses near Micah'shouse raised the alarm and set off in pursuit of the Danites.
23 Comme ils criaient après les Danites, ceux-ci, se retournant, dirent à Mika: "Qu'as-tu à crier ainsi"--	23 As they shouted after the Danites, the latter, turning about, said to Micah, 'What is the matter withyou, that you are shouting like this?'
24 "Vous m'avez pris mon dieu que je m'étais fabriqué, leur répondit-il, ainsi que le prêtre. Vouspartez, et que me reste-t-il? Comment pouvez-vous me dire: Qu'as-tu?"	24 He replied, 'You have taken away my god, which I have had made, and the priest as wel . You aregoing away, and what have I got left? And now you ask me, "What is the matter?" '
25 Les Danites lui répliquèrent: "Ne nous fais plus entendre ta voix! Sinon des hommes exaspéréspourraient bien tomber sur vous. Tu risques de causer ta perte et celle de ta maison!"	25 The Danites said, 'Let us hear no more from you, or quick-tempered men may set about you, and thismight cost you your life and the lives of your family!'
26 Les Danites poursuivirent leur chemin, et Mika, voyant qu'ils étaient les plus forts, s'en retourna etrevint chez lui.	26 So the Danites went on their way; and Micah, seeing that they were the stronger, turned and wenthome.
27 Ainsi, après avoir pris le dieu qu'avait fabriqué Mika, et le prêtre qu'il avait à lui, les Danitesmarchèrent contre Laïsh, contre un peuple tranquille et confiant. Ils le passèrent au fil de l'épée et ils livrèrent laville aux flammes.	27 So, having taken the god made by Micah, and the priest who had been his, the Danites marched onLaish, on a peaceful and trusting people. They put it to the sword and they burned down the town.
28 Il n'y eut personne pour la secourir, car elle était loin de Sidon et elle n'avait pas de relations avecles Araméens. Elle se situait dans la vallée qui s'étend vers Bet-Rehob. Ils rebâtirent la ville, s'y établirent,	28 There was no one to come to the rescue, since it was a long way from Sidon and had no contact withthe Aramaeans. It lay in the valley running towards Beth-Rehob. They rebuilt the town and settled in it
29 et ils l'appelèrent Dan, du nom de Dan leur père qui était né d'Israël. A l'origine pourtant la villes'appelait Laïsh.	29 and cal ed it Dan, from the name of Dan their ancestor who had been born to Israel; original y,however, the town had been called Laish.
30 Les Danites dressèrent pour eux l'image taillée. Yehonatân, fils de Gershom, fils de Moïse, etensuite ses fils, ont été prêtres de la tribu de Dan jusqu'au jour où la population du pays fut emmenée en exil.	30 The Danites erected the carved statue for themselves. Jonathan son of Gershom, son of Moses, andhis sons after him were priests for the tribe of Dan til the day when the inhabitants of the country were carriedaway into exile.
31 Ils installèrent pour leur usage l'image taillée que Mika avait faite, et elle demeura là aussilongtemps que subsista la maison de Dieu à Silo.	31 The carved statue made by Micah they instal ed for their own use, and there it stayed as long as thehouse of God remained at Shiloh.
