| 1 Ensuite, au bout de quatorze ans, je montai de nouveau à Jérusalem avec Barnabé et Tite que je prisavec moi. | 1 Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along with me. |
| 2 J'y montai à la suite d'une révélation; et je leur exposai l'Evangile que je prêche parmi les païens -mais séparément aux notables, de peur de courir ou d'avoir couru pour rien. | 2 I went up by revelation; and I laid before them (but privately before those who were of repute) the gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, lest somehow I should be running or had run in vain. |
| 3 Eh bien! de Tite lui-même, mon compagnon qui était grec, on n'exigea pas qu'il se fît circoncire. | 3 But even Titus, who was with me, was not compelled to be circumcised, though he was a Greek. |
| 4 Mais à cause des intrus, ces faux frères qui se sont glissés pour espionner la liberté que nous avonsdans le Christ Jésus, afin de nous réduire en servitude, | 4 But because of false brethren secretly brought in, who slipped in to spy out our freedom which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage-- |
| 5 gens auxquels nous refusâmes de céder, fût-ce un moment, par déférence, afin de sauvegarder pourvous la vérité de l'Evangile... | 5 to them we did not yield submission even for a moment, that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you. |
| 6 Et de la part de ceux qu'on tenait pour des notables - peu m'importe ce qu'alors ils pouvaient être;Dieu ne fait point acception des personnes --, à mon Evangile, en tout cas, les notables n'ont rien ajouté. | 6 And from those who were reputed to be something (what they were makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality)--those, I say, who were of repute added nothing to me; |
| 7 Au contraire, voyant que l'évangélisation des incirconcis m'était confiée comme à Pierre celle descirconcis -- | 7 but on the contrary, when they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been entrusted with the gospel to the circumcised |
| 8 car Celui qui avait agi en Pierre pour faire de lui un apôtre des circoncis, avait pareillement agi enmoi en faveur des païens -- | 8 (for he who worked through Peter for the mission to the circumcised worked through me also for the Gentiles), |
| 9 et reconnaissant la grâce qui m'avait été départie, Jacques, Céphas et Jean, ces notables, cescolonnes, nous tendirent la main, à moi et à Barnabé, en signe de communion: nous irions, nous aux païens, euxà la Circoncision; | 9 and when they perceived the grace that was given to me, James and Cephas and John, who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised; |
| 10 nous devions seulement songer aux pauvres, ce que précisément j'ai eu à coeur de faire. | 10 only they would have us remember the poor, which very thing I was eager to do. |
| 11 Mais quand Céphas vint à Antioche, je lui résistai en face, parce qu'il s'était donné tort. | 11 But when Cephas came to Antioch I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. |
| 12 En effet, avant l'arrivée de certaines gens de l'entourage de Jacques, il prenait ses repas avec lespaïens; mais quand ces gens arrivèrent, on le vit se dérober et se tenir à l'écart, par peur des circoncis. | 12 For before certain men came from James, he ate with the Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself, fearing the circumcision party. |
| 13 Et les autres Juifs l'imitèrent dans sa dissimulation, au point d'entraîner Barnabé lui-même àdissimuler avec eux. | 13 And with him the rest of the Jews acted insincerely, so that even Barnabas was carried away by their insincerity. |
| 14 Mais quand je vis qu'ils ne marchaient pas droit selon la vérité de l'Evangile, je dis à Céphasdevant tout le monde: "Si toi qui es Juif, tu vis comme les païens, et non à la juive, comment peux-tu contraindreles païens à judaïser? | 14 But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, "If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?" |
| 15 "Nous sommes, nous, des Juifs de naissance et non de ces pécheurs de païens; | 15 We ourselves, who are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners, |
| 16 et cependant, sachant que l'homme n'est pas justifié par la pratique de la loi, mais seulement par lafoi en Jésus Christ, nous avons cru, nous aussi, au Christ Jésus, afin d'obtenir la justification par la foi au Christet non par la pratique de la loi, puisque par la pratique de la loi personne ne sera justifié. | 16 yet who know that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. |
| 17 Or si, recherchant notre justification dans le Christ, il s'est trouvé que nous sommes des pécheurscomme les autres, serait-ce que le Christ est au service du péché? Certes non! | 17 But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! |
| 18 Car en relevant ce que j'ai abattu, je me convaincs moi-même de transgression. | 18 But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. |
| 19 En effet, par la Loi je suis mort à la Loi afin de vivre à Dieu: je suis crucifié avec le Christ; | 19 For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. |
| 20 et ce n'est plus moi qui vis, mais le Christ qui vit en moi. Ma vie présente dans la chair, je la visdans la foi au Fils de Dieu qui m'a aimé et s'est livré pour moi. | 20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. |
| 21 Je n'annule pas le don de Dieu: car si la justice vient de la loi, c'est donc que le Christ est mort pourrien." | 21 I do not nullify the grace of God; for if justification were through the law, then Christ died to no purpose. |
