| 3 Alors Paul lui dit: "C'est Dieu qui te frappera, toi, muraille blanchie! Eh quoi! Tu sièges pour mejuger d'après la Loi, et, au mépris de la Loi, tu ordonnes de me frapper!" | 3 Then Paul said to him, "God shall strike you, you whitewashed wall! Are you sitting to judge me according to the law, and yet contrary to the law you order me to be struck?" |
| 4 Les assistants lui dirent: "C'est le grand prêtre de Dieu que tu insultes?" | 4 Those who stood by said, "Would you revile God's high priest?" |
| 5 Paul répondit: "Je ne savais pas, frères, que ce fût le grand prêtre. Car il est écrit: Tu ne maudiras pasle chef de ton peuple." | 5 And Paul said, "I did not know, brethren, that he was the high priest; for it is written, 'You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.'" |
| 6 Paul savait qu'il y avait là d'un côté le parti des Sadducéens, de l'autre celui des Pharisiens. Il s'écriadonc dans le Sanhédrin: "Frères, je suis, moi, Pharisien, fils de Pharisiens. C'est pour notre espérance, larésurrection des morts, que je suis mis en jugement." | 6 But when Paul perceived that one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, "Brethren, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees; with respect to the hope and the resurrection of the dead I am on trial." |
| 7 A peine eut-il dit cela qu'un conflit se produisit entre Pharisiens et Sadducéens, et l'assemblée sedivisa. | 7 And when he had said this, a dissension arose between the Pharisees and the Sadducees; and the assembly was divided. |
| 8 Les Sadducéens disent en effet qu'il n'y a ni résurrection, ni ange, ni esprit, tandis que les Pharisiensprofessent l'un et l'autre. | 8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees acknowledge them all. |
| 9 Il se fit donc une grande clameur. Quelques scribes du parti des Pharisiens se levèrent et protestèrenténergiquement: "Nous ne trouvons rien de mal en cet homme. Et si un esprit lui avait parlé? Ou un ange?" | 9 Then a great clamor arose; and some of the scribes of the Pharisees' party stood up and contended, "We find nothing wrong in this man. What if a spirit or an angel spoke to him?" |
| 10 La dispute devenait de plus en plus vive. Le tribun, craignant qu'ils ne missent Paul en pièces, fitdescendre la troupe pour l'enlever du milieu d'eux et le ramener à la forteresse. | 10 And when the dissension became violent, the tribune, afraid that Paul would be torn in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them and bring him into the barracks. |
| 11 La nuit suivante, le Seigneur vint le trouver et lui dit: "Courage! De même que tu as rendutémoignage de moi à Jérusalem, ainsi faut-il encore que tu témoignes à Rome." | 11 The following night the Lord stood by him and said, "Take courage, for as you have testified about me at Jerusalem, so you must bear witness also at Rome." |
| 12 Lorsqu'il fit jour, les Juifs tinrent un conciliabule, où ils s'engagèrent par anathème à ne pas mangerni boire avant d'avoir tué Paul. | 12 When it was day, the Jews made a plot and bound themselves by an oath neither to eat nor drink till they had killed Paul. |
| 13 Ils étaient plus de 40 à avoir fait cette conjuration. | 13 There were more than forty who made this conspiracy. |
| 14 Ils allèrent trouver les grands prêtres et les anciens, et leur dirent: "Nous nous sommes engagés paranathème à ne rien prendre avant d'avoir tué Paul. | 14 And they went to the chief priests and elders, and said, "We have strictly bound ourselves by an oath to taste no food till we have killed Paul. |
| 15 Vous donc maintenant, d'accord avec le Sanhédrin, expliquez au tribun qu'il doit vous l'amener,sous prétexte d'examiner plus à fond son affaire. De notre côté, nous sommes prêts à le tuer avant qu'il n'arrive." | 15 You therefore, along with the council, give notice now to the tribune to bring him down to you, as though you were going to determine his case more exactly. And we are ready to kill him before he comes near." |
| 16 Mais le fils de la soeur de Paul eut connaissance du guet-apens. Il se rendit à la forteresse, entra etprévint Paul. | 16 Now the son of Paul's sister heard of their ambush; so he went and entered the barracks and told Paul. |
| 17 Appelant un des centurions, Paul lui dit: "Conduis ce jeune homme au tribun; il a quelque chose àlui communiquer." | 17 And Paul called one of the centurions and said, "Take this young man to the tribune; for he has something to tell him." |
| 18 Le centurion le prit donc et l'amena au tribun. "Le prisonnier Paul, dit-il, m'a appelé et m'a prié det'amener ce jeune homme, qui a quelque chose à te dire." | 18 So he took him and brought him to the tribune and said, "Paul the prisoner called me and asked me to bring this young man to you, as he has something to say to you." |
| 19 Le tribun prit le jeune homme par la main, se retira à l'écart et lui demanda: "Qu'as-tu à mecommuniquer?" - | 19 The tribune took him by the hand, and going aside asked him privately, "What is it that you have to tell me?" |
| 20 "Les Juifs, répondit-il, se sont concertés pour te prier d'amener Paul demain au Sanhédrin, sousprétexte d'enquêter plus à fond sur son cas. | 20 And he said, "The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though they were going to inquire somewhat more closely about him. |
| 21 Ne va pas les croire. Plus de 40 d'entre eux le guettent, qui se sont engagés par anathème à ne pasmanger ni boire avant de l'avoir tué. Et maintenant, ils sont tout prêts, escomptant ton accord." | 21 But do not yield to them; for more than forty of their men lie in ambush for him, having bound themselves by an oath neither to eat nor drink till they have killed him; and now they are ready, waiting for the promise from you." |
| 22 Le tribun congédia le jeune homme avec cette recommandation: "Ne raconte à personne que tu m'asrévélé ces choses." | 22 So the tribune dismissed the young man, charging him, "Tell no one that you have informed me of this." |
| 23 Puis il appela deux des centurions et leur dit: "Tenez prêts à partir pour Césarée, dès la troisièmeheure de la nuit, 200 soldats, 70 cavaliers et 200 hommes d'armes. | 23 Then he called two of the centurions and said, "At the third hour of the night get ready two hundred soldiers with seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen to go as far as Caesarea. |
| 24 Qu'on ait aussi des chevaux pour faire monter Paul et le conduire sain et sauf au gouverneur Félix." | 24 Also provide mounts for Paul to ride, and bring him safely to Felix the governor." |
| 25 Et il écrivit une lettre ainsi conçue: | 25 And he wrote a letter to this effect: |
| 26 "Claudius Lysias au très excellent gouverneur Félix, salut! | 26 "Claudius Lysias to his Excellency the governor Felix, greeting. |
| 27 L'homme que voici avait été pris par les Juifs, et ils allaient le tuer, quand j'arrivai avec la troupe etle leur arrachai, ayant appris qu'il était citoyen romain. | 27 This man was seized by the Jews, and was about to be killed by them, when I came upon them with the soldiers and rescued him, having learned that he was a Roman citizen. |
| 28 J'ai voulu savoir au juste pourquoi ils l'accusaient et je l'ai amené dans leur Sanhédrin. | 28 And desiring to know the charge on which they accused him, I brought him down to their council. |
| 29 J'ai constaté que l'accusation se rapportait à des points contestés de leur Loi, mais qu'il n'y avaitaucune charge qui entraînât la mort ou les chaînes. | 29 I found that he was accused about questions of their law, but charged with nothing deserving death or imprisonment. |
| 30 Avisé qu'un complot se préparait contre cet homme, je te l'ai aussitôt envoyé, et j'ai informé sesaccusateurs qu'ils avaient à porter devant toi leur plainte contre lui." | 30 And when it was disclosed to me that there would be a plot against the man, I sent him to you at once, ordering his accusers also to state before you what they have against him." |
| 31 Conformément aux ordres reçus, les soldats prirent Paul et le conduisirent de nuit à Antipatris. | 31 So the soldiers, according to their instructions, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris. |
| 32 Le lendemain, ils laissèrent les cavaliers s'en aller avec lui et rentrèrent à la forteresse. | 32 And on the morrow they returned to the barracks, leaving the horsemen to go on with him. |
| 33 Arrivés à Césarée, les cavaliers remirent la lettre au gouverneur et lui présentèrent Paul. | 33 When they came to Caesarea and delivered the letter to the governor, they presented Paul also before him. |
| 34 Après avoir lu la lettre, le gouverneur s'informa de quelle province il était. Apprenant qu'il était deCilicie: | 34 On reading the letter, he asked to what province he belonged. When he learned that he was from Cilicia |
| 35 "Je t'entendrai, dit-il, quand tes accusateurs seront arrivés, eux aussi." Et il le fit garder dans leprétoire d'Hérode. | 35 he said, "I will hear you when your accusers arrive." And he commanded him to be guarded in Herod's praetorium. |
